It was done both to add a bit of difficulty and to add a big of mystery to the experience. After all, the circumstances make it more plausible.

I don't see why being a bit hard is a downside.
Otherwise, it seems pretty short to me, especially compared to many 2 part entries and the like.

1-ups do nothing whatsoever, and coins were largely provided by the enemies provided. There isn't any benefit to throwing things around needlessly, after all.
