Wait a minute people

I only calculated the score with 5 ratings

I had the following ratings: Nworlds', MoD's, KevinOC's, MP3's, and Volcove's.

Then I received Nan's and SuYo's and I didn't know if I had to count my ratings o

1. I had no time to restart I had to go to bed
2. Everyone was like OH GOD POST THEM
3. Do you actually believe that I would restart all the calculations?

So, yeah, I screwed up. Didn't really have time. Sorry :P

My judgings: show
Here's my judgings, based in three things:

@Fun Factor (Fun): This is strictly gameplay and fun overall.
@Shiny Graphics (Graphics): All about the level's looks.
@Other Thoughts (Other): Anything else that may or may not be significant.

***MushYoshi's Judgings***
Windy Valley Gorge - 50% Land 25% Cloud 25% Sky

@Fun Factor: 7/10 - Kewl!

This level is actually quite fun. There's a decent amount of challenge in some parts, although there could have been some more platforming sections. There was a small amount of lag which could have been prevented with a transition, but it's no big deal. There were some cool ideas used here. And the main song you used adds a lot to the experience.

@Shiny Graphics: 3/5 - Regular

Well, graphics are good, but nothing extraordinary. You used decorations like trees and other things, but nothing that really stood out.

@Other Thoughts: 4.5/5 - Got some style...

+1 Music is awesome. Fits the level quite nicely.
-0.5 Maybe the whole part with the blocks blocking the tunnels could have been a little more creative...
+1 Slingstars. Well used. And I don't see them used too much...

@Total Score: 14.5/20 - You got potential, bro. Keep at it.

***DarkBlaze's Judgings***
Sandy Soil in the Skylands

@Fun Factor: 9/10 - Awesome

Some great platforming sections, good level design in general... only thing I dislike is that in some places the enemies are more than necessary, but other than that they're well placed. It also irradiates calmness...

@Shiny Graphics: 4.5/5 - Eye candy

Mixing Jungle and Sand tiles must have been quite hard, and the result looks nice, but a little weird... The overall design fits with the theme, there are some nice uses of water all around... Very nice.

@Other Thoughts: 4.5/5

+0.5 Music is good.
+1 DAT WATERFALL

@Total Score: 18/20 - Spectacular job.

***Doram's Judgings***
Island Paradise Escape

@Fun Factor: 6/10 - Not bad...

This level has quite creative ideas, like the multiple paths, and all those 1-ups, and that hard to get shortcut. There's some good platforming, but the problem is that the "under the reef" path is quite short, and doesn't really have much put into it, it's like you focused too much on the mountain way. Also, at the final part of the mountain path it's possible to mess up the flying Koopas with the FLUDD, taking them down before ascending and if that happens that part becomes impossible. That lowers the score a little.

@Shiny Graphics: 3.5/5 - It's good

Mostly good. Excellent tilework. However, some parts seem to lack decoration, and the waterfall at the beginning isn't very well done.

@Other thoughts: 3.5/5 - It is something

-0.5 Same thing I mentioned in Fun. Sorry, but you didn't playtest this enough to realize that, apparently. And if you did it on purpose... well... that's just frustrating to the player.
+0.5 Multiple path idea and two Shine Sprites.
+0.5 Secret 1-ups.

@Final Score: 13/20 - Good concept, but could have been done better.

***Bomberman101's judgings***
Toad Woodlands

@Fun Factor: 4/10 - ...umm...

Well... the beginning part, is kind of creative, and the platforming there is good. However there's a lot of lag, and that ruins it a little... The road to Bowser's Castle isn't very creative, it's just flat land with lots of enemies on it. This could have been way better. Also, the Castle itself is insanely short, you can save Peach in like... 30 seconds. It's like you lost inspiration half-way through the level. This idea could have had a lot of potential, but sadly it isn't seen. Still not bad.

@Shiny Graphics: 4/5 - Neat

I gotta admit the graphics are mostly great. Good tilework and good decoration. In some parts it could have used more work, though.

@Other thoughts: 2.5/5 - Meh

-1 This level could have been much better. It had potential. But...
+0.5 Little story kind of adds to the atmosphere.

@Final Score: 10.5/20 - You gotta work harder next time. Effort is necessary for good ideas to perform.

***GMDragon11's judgings***
Shines In The Sky Ruins

@Fun Factor: 9/10 - Way cool

It's quite fun, with good platforming and a nice amount of challenge, with the use of the wing cap, and well placed enemies. Good job.

@Shiny Graphics: 4.5/5 - Good job

Graphics look awesome, but I have this complaint: Transitions. At some points their placement makes the level look weird, you have to be playing in the left or the right of the screen... it's kind of strange.

@Other thoughts: 3.5/5 - No comment, except

-0.5 Transitions... in the Secret Room part, moving too much to the left results in you going through a transition and falling to your death. Not very cool.
+1 Music's nice.

@Final Score: 17/20 - Excellent work.

***NyansIsAPyro's judgings***
Up, Up, Down, Down (left, right, left, righ*gets shot*)

@Fun Factor: 8/10 - Blazin' through the stars...

Slingstars. You used slingstars. And you used them in an awesome way! With them leading to the next part of the level, to some red coins, making you go through coins, that's actually quite cool. Also, it's a good challenge, with good platforming. And it's quite nice that you placed pipes to return and get any missing red coins. There was some thought put into this :P I don't have any particular complaints... But I guess this probably could have been even better.

@Shiny Graphics: 2/5 - Enough to work with

Well... there's no decoration at all, and most of the stage is clouds. The level itself is well designed, but... there's nothing cool, graphics-wise.

@Other Thoughts: 3.5/5 - Yay for extra chances

+0 It really fits the song I'm listening to right now :P
+0.5 The return pipes.

@Final Score: 13.5/20 - It's a fun level to play... sadly graphics messed up your score xD

***SomeOne's judgings***
¡Vamos a la playa! (oh, oh oooooh oh...)

@Fun Factor: 5/10 - Signs.

Well... it doesn't have much. The first part is mostly flat, with the pits and the water, and shy guys... and probably something more related to graphics, but still: in a place, the sand tiles are so low they can barely be seen in gameplay. You jump there and you think you'll fall. I don't know if that's what you intended, but still... Next, the pipes. Two of them lead backwards, and honestly, that isn't very original and doesn't add to the experience. You could have had them sending you to some other room or something. Then you go on through the water parts, with the maze there... it's kind of creative, but nothing too impressive. At least the signs are cool. :P

@Shiny Graphics: 1/5 - Sand.

NEVER work with Sand tiles unless you've practiced a lot with them. Seriously.
For gameplay purposes, they work fine, but they don't look well. There's a lot of cut-off here.
And there was little decoration. But at least it's something.

@Other thoughts: 4 - Signs again

+0.5 Signs are nice
+0.5 Music fits
+0 Dat title :D

@Final Score: 10/20 - Keep practicing. This could have been an awesome level, just gotta put more effort into it.
Some day I'll fix my sig.

...are you ♥♥♥♥ kidding me?

There is no defending this. Are you stupid? This is... I'm sorry, this is seriously one of the single stupidest excuses I've heard ever. And I have had all day to think this over and cool down- and it still pisses me off.

Let's get the first thing straight. Don't even try to lie to me. It wasn't the fact that 'you'd keep everyone waiting.' We'd all be willing to wait if we got PROPER RESULTS instead of ones that were MISCALCULATED and SABOTAGED.

No, I'm sure you were worried that YOU WOULDN'T GET TO ANNOUNCE THE RESULTS. And you were willing to cut corners to get it done. You're not stupid, Star king, I should like to hope. Someone with the magnitude of talent you have in leadership, artistic ability and designing could surely figure out PROPER RESULTS THAT TAKE LONGER are better than QUICK, FALSE ONES that MoD has to spend HIS ENTIRE AFTERNOON RECALCULATING.

...

Well.

As of now, myself or the coordinator of the LDC will be the ONLY ONES allowed to post results. Sorry, future winners.

I'm out. Unbelievable.

Re: 18th Level Designer Contest

Postby MessengerOfDreams » April 14th, 2012, 3:49 pm

Pardon the double post, but I didn't want to keep by fit of rage in the same post as my happier post with the gratitude from the judges.

After all, the feedback I got was phenominal, especially from StarKing (whose reviews I will ACP hack and post on his behalf) and Volcove.

@Volcove- Haha, I was worried that I may have overdone it with the bullet bills (especially around the bridge) although I personally found it to be fun enough (I liked the boss. :P). You're totally forgiven and respected for disagreeing- after all, as a Touhou fan you know your bullet hells.

"they serve to slightly mar what is otherwise perfection."

Well damn. He used the word perfection, even if I did some things to mar it. I admit the castle looked a bit off although I was kinda loopy and having fun with the tiles around that time. Colds. They do your sanity in. :P

" I love the light-powered bridge feature in particular; although you said it was inspired by someone else, it is still quite mesmerizing (although it backfired once)."

There wasn't much I could do about the backfiring, haha. But I'll unabashedly agree, when I looked at this moment from my own video, I was like "My lord, did I create that?"

"It is interesting how you chose to express a story through a medium such as this, and it is the best one I've seen yet. The choice ending in particular was not something I had expected; superb job. +2"

Damn. That's some high praise, Volcove, considering I really wanted to tell the story through level. Thanks so much.

"Likewise, the extreme length leaves something to be desired. After all, it is a level contest, wheras the length is extreme enough to be more of a flat-out series. It likely could have done the same thing over less parts had it been compacted better, and it wouldn't have dragged on so long as a result. -0.5"

Hmm, I agree that for a contest entry that it was long, but I don't think it'd need to be so compacted. Maybe in the beginning of part 3 (I came to detest the vent maze) and at the end of part 4. Otherwise, I think I managed length well (on each individual part.) But for a contest entry I maybe overdid it a bit.
--------------------------------
@Amp- I'm glad you were so enthusiastic about your praise. This part jumps out at me.

+0.65 – Some of the features you used in your level, I swear, have never been used in levels before. Just seriously, you could start a whole new style of level designing. Just the layers of tiling and the way you almost overdid the decorations but thankfully you found a nice balance, it makes the story come alive. Literally

...I innovated? Oh my god, where?! :D :D :D Like within the story and everything? Cause if I brought a whole new style of Level Designing, holy god I've accomplished a site dream right there.
-----------------------------
@Nworlds- thanks for addressing some of the techy issues!

-0.05: I noticed that the mysterious voice answered on a sentence Mario didn't say cause the text was too long, so he couldn't say it. (Part 1)

Oh, I must have missed that. I think it was the voice (MessengerOfDreams) saying "Good Luck, Sir" for the first time. Since that's kind of a re-occurring thing and all.

Graphics: 5/5 You will always be the king of graphics and you know that. Nothing more to say.

The king? Shucks, I guess. I admit I'm pretty good, but I'd have to say the current king of graphics is Nin10mode. He makes the most gorgeous levels, I swear, especially as of late.

@Star king, whose ♥♥♥♥♥ I have just finished cutting.

"His Review": show
Dark by MessengerOfDreams

19.5/20

That’s right. Nineteen and a half. My dear readers, we just reached a limit of possibilities in the Level Designer, it’s difficult to make it higher. And since 19.5 is not a rating to be given that easily, I’ll guess you’ll be interested to read the rest of my ratings, and see why a such high note is given to this level series. It’s right below. Go have a look.

Rating details:

--- Fun: 10/10
How to say. My first reaction when Nworlds told me there were 5 levels in your series, I went WHAT, but at the end, I actually wanted more. Because at the end, I felt like I was watching a movie, a movie you don’t want it to end. But I was not only the watcher, but the actor too. So I played the level like a movie, and it was truly epic. At the end (you won’t believe it, but I swear it’s true) but I literally cried. And it’s rare, even when I watch a movie. So if your level made me cry, it’s just awesome. The level in itself was just enough to be called a challenge. Hard, yes, but not too much. And I didn’t get bored, which is quite rare for a level. Your level was quite fun.
--- Graphics: 4.5/5
What to say. It’s true, there is no coins/1-ups ( :troll: ), and your tileset was sometimes quite strange, but it really contributes to the feeling of living a dream (oh god spoilers). Your style is very different from others Level Designer, and you just pushed it to the very best. Without lag. The bus at the end was a bit too strange though, am I right?
--- Other: 5/5
[+1] Story
[+1] Alternate Endings + End in general :3
[+1] Light bridge at the beginning
[+1] Boss
… whatever, you got the point Only bad point in your level : Bullet Bills. They are just EVERYWHERE

--- Overall: 19.5
I guess 19.5 is the point just below perfection. Just fix some tiles problems (I’m speaking of part 4, of course) and fix that bus at the end. Because that, in my opinion, and I'm sure everyone agree, is not a bus

But anyway, in all seriousness, this is one of the best (if not the best) level I ever played. This is surely the best level of 2012 so far.

"At the end (you won’t believe it, but I swear it’s true) but I literally cried. And it’s rare, even when I watch a movie. So if your level made me cry, it’s just awesome."

Holy ♥♥♥♥ bro, YOU? I expected that sooner or later, someone would cry at a beautiful level (and frankly I'm surprised it wasn't me xD) but I didn't expect it to be you and I... well I expected if anyone would make a weeptastic level it'd be me. But wow, that's among the highest praise I'll ever get right there.

The bus at the end was a bit too strange though, am I right?

Haha, I meant to change the sign to "truck." Cause guess what? Your number 4 designer on the tiers, three time LDC winner, STILL CANNOT DESIGN BLOCK OBJECTS TO SAVE HIS ♥♥♥♥ LIFE.
--------------------------------
And specific notes to some users involved.

@Nin- I seriously think you're shaping to become an incredible designer. Which is an odd thing to say since you've been great for awhile, but lately you've shown massive amounts of growth. Keep at it.

@Yoshi Boo 118- Dude, seriously. Fix the slings and the bugs, maybe split the parts if at all possible, and you have a modern day masterpiece. I was blown away.

@NanTheDark- No, you didn't enter. I just found it funny that you lost the Duel due to Linkdroid giving your level questionable bad scores and then you made Doram lose a potential silver medal with a questionable bad score. :troll: Cause without it he'd get second with no contest.

@Volcove- I'm surprised you got second as well, to be honest. Thought that you'd snag the 5th place at last. I think that this was among your lesser great levels- but it was still pretty great, mostly because of your professional craftsmanship. Next time do a short level with a glaring flaw. :3

@GMDragon11- I'm surprised at just how great your graphics were this time. Aside from the glaring cutoff, it was a gorgeous level, even if gameplay was lacking. Also, do pay attention to my recommendation for Alternate Music- Krook's March makes the level incredible.

@SuYo1141- Hey, 11th and a 14.75 in your second LDC in a heated field is pretty good. I had a lot of trouble in my earliest LDCs- my 8th and 9th LDC entries wouldn't be able to stand in the same wavelength as Dark and Destinations. They were HORRIBLE, MAN. HORRIBLE. (I lucked out on my 7th though.)

@Nyans- Hey, pretty good first showing. Even if my score isn't super high, I love your level. It's such a throwback to my earliest days.

@Drayano- Hey, if you read this- try again. Seriously. You have massive potential, you just screwed some major things up. Technical merit more than anything.

@Yoshi999 and MushYoshi- I really do hope you hear what I'm saying about trying new things. You do talented levels but they're much too similar. I want to see you try new things, okay?

@King- Go Calvin and Hobbes. ^_^

@Nworlds- here's Star king's judgings for you. :D
Spoiler: show
Luigi’s Castle by Nworlds

14/20
My god, Nworlds. You tried to make something original, but you overdid it. The level wasn’t at all what I was waiting for, for example the title says there is some castle maybe, in the level, and where is it. And many things too, showed here.

Rating details:

--- Fun: 6/10
That’s what I feared when I started with MoD’s level… I would suddenly find an incredible difference between the levels. And I’m sorry to tell you this, Nworlds, but it’s true I found MoD’s level hard with all the Bullet Bills, but you just made yours impossible, and this, my young fella, is not really fun. Only the end of the boss was a bit easier and therefore nicer to play, but still.
--- Graphics: 3/5
I looked at the title, I was like Yay a castle level. And then… The ♥♥♥♥. There is no real castle in this :O But whatever. Other than that, the level’s tileset was really strange… too strange for me, and nothing explain a that strange tileset for me.
--- Other: 5/5
[+0.5] Boss was… cool, but hard.
[+1] Gravity glass blocks
[+0.5] Invisible maze was nice.

--- Overall: 14/20
I’ve seen far better from you, Nworlds. You tried to use stuff that would make your level cool, and that saved your score, but what was that. I don’t recognize you in this D:

@Brawler- Damn, Brawler, that was almost such a fantastic level! I really hope you correct your bugs and errors. They were fantastic levels otherwise. They remind me of DarkBlaze and Cryokenetic.

Overall, we had a ♥♥♥♥ of bumps, but hardly anyone is going to remember those in the future (although I cringe everytime I so much as see a post in the 8th LDC :oops: Back when Volcove wasn't my above-all inspiration in designing and instead the aloof guy I kept shouting at. Haha, how things change.) What we'll remember most is in the levels. I have to say that the 18th LDC stands among the 7th and 16th LDCs in talent. Great job, guys.

It is a shame for future winners, unfortunately. But out of all the people who would have the opportunity to announce the results, the best is easily you MoD. You're quick, fair with the scores and can calculate them well and your committed to the role too.

Only thing is, i worry if you take too many responsibilities sometimes. I mean, you are taking care of pretty much the whole level designer forum, along with having the responsibility of managing cookie nominations and other medals and making pretty awesome levels on top of that.

Then again, if you enjoy having the jobs and being probably one of the best global mods in history (though there haven't been many) i applaud you for that. :P

EDIT: I found you innovated most in the first level (and it was my personal favourite out of all 5) where you included this confusing tiling layout, it looked like a stone path but it was actually part of the background. ...also just the use of the golden wire tile, but that has always been a favourite tile of mine. ^_^

Really sorry about the double post but i don't have enough character limit on my phone to be able to edit my last post. But i hope you noticed in Universitas second transition i used your ice block under the surface idea with the decorations behind it. I'd never seen that in any level before Roaming Celsius so you actually inspired me to go crazy on graphics. XD

My Most Recent Works: show
I switch my signature a lot. If you wanna see some of my past ones, here you go.
Silent Conversations and a Crow's Final Song!
My latest story, and one of my personal favorites. A girl bound in silence finds the words to say to her prospective girlfriend as they visit her religious father in a dusty town on the edge of Kansas, where the crows' migration south brings forth anchored memories, the path to resolution, and a new start.

Form (25quared)
This might be like nothing you've seen before.
Updated Works! Some of my past best and current stuff: show

Because the world needed a Samus/Dedede story
Fanfic: Ecstatic Silence

Fanfic: Far From the Edge
It's a dance that's been a long time coming for a brand new man and an unchanging woman, but once one takes the plunge there's no falling back up.
Original: Jealous Ghosts of the Mississippi
The story of Rachel meeting Amber after a lifetime of silence and being shunned
Original: Your Hand in Mine
One of my most personal stories about a dangerous romance. Now to be published in a college lit journal!

Fire Zone: MoD says it's impossible

Green Path: SMIC says it's too easy (even the hard path :awe: )

Ghostly Cave: SMIC says it's impossible because stupid darkness on dark background

Nwinter: Ice maze was glitchy as hell (Still too lazy to make it better)

Luigi's Castle: SK, MoD (and probably Kevin) said it's impossible (at some parts) (I thought Mechatron was easier than Fire Zone :) )

19th LDC entry: Karyete makes the level easy and I make it hard so it's both :awe:

Opinions rock, don't they? :mrgreen: (goes to MoD's graphics blah blah btw)
