While in the desert, Mario met Explorer Guy, who was attempting to excavate the ancient temple of King Goombiard. The surface entrance was locked, caved in, and there was no way in. He wouldn't give up, however, and was convinced there was an entrance underground. In the exploration, he, Mario, and his assistant, Herman, found a sinkhole, and before they knew it, they were stuck underground, in the Quicksand Caves. Now, the only way out may be to find the temple and exit from there.
