Remember when LDCs were fun and not just a huge ♥♥♥♥ of angst for several weeks while the judgings were being processed?
Someone mentioned there was 17 entries in this contest, and yeah, they're short. 17 isn't a small number, though- actually, compared to the track records of recent LDCs, it's kindof a lot. II assume everyone's expecting a review on their level (judges should do one anyway instead of just arbitrarily assigning relative number scores), so lets do some simple math here. I'm going to assume that the playtime per entry is negligible (hint, it's not, so there goes at least an hour already), and also assume that it takes roughly 15 minutes to compose a short paragraph summarizing each level's features and flaws. That's over four hours of straight typing alone.
Oh, but, we didn't account for any breaks the judges would take either. They're people, they need to eat and sleep and go to class and stuff, sometimes fix a mistake or refer back to a level, and generally not sit playing levels and typing reviews for multiple consecutive hours lest their sanity degrade.
I have judged before, and my general pattern is to take a break after every three levels for an hour or so, go play a game that won't destroy someone's dreams because their level didn't match up to the standard set by the LD pros. It's stressful. As a judge, you're going to be who entrants hold accountable, you're going to be the one justifying your thoughts to someone who probably didn't get the gold medal they were hoping for.
Let's put it all together now. An hour to playtest every level. A little over four hours to type up a decent review for each level (we'll round this to a nice even four hours, though). Five hours worth of breaks. That comes in at ten hours worth of effort put in per judge, that they need to fit around things like sleep schedules and classes and jobs and internet outages and whatever other stuff is going on in their lives. Yeah, some people have done judgings in a day. But most haven't, and it's pretty understandable why they haven't when you break it all down.
tl;dr: Don't worry, Lordpat, you're doing great. ♥♥♥♥ happens, and we're still well ahead of typical LDC schedule.
