I knew Runouw.com as a place to relax, chat with friends, and make custom levels. Today, I know it as a heart-pounding adventure, with threats lying around every corner. Or in this case, every transition.
CHAPTER 1:Through the Computer(Ninny Novel)
December 29, 2009, 7:00pm, Eastern Standard Time
“Wow, it’s really bad out here today,” I typed into the chat.
“Ya, lol. Been rainin’ EVERYWHERE the last couple day. . . *days.” A friend of mine, another user, star-fawful, was the only one on with me. “Woops, 1 AM here in London, gtg!”
I somehow knew that I was going to alone… don’t ask why. Anyway, I eagerly replied, “Cya. And look out for my new level when ya’ log back in, K?”December 30th, 2009 was the day that I was going to submit my final copy of the 5th Level Designer contest! It was going to be one of the best looking levels that I made. (Of course, Credit goes to 24murph for starting the Level.)
I put the finishing touches on my level, a RocketFludd here, and a skelegooney there… And it was done. Outside the window, lightning started. I didn’t let the noise get to me, and put my level in the code tags. Same old, same old. Click. Copy. Paste. “And finally…” but something interrupted me. *FLASH!!!* *BOOOOM!* The lightning had struck my power box as I clicked submit! And there I lay, unconscious, surrounded by darkness.
Finally, I awoke, in a place unfamiliar… “Wha—Where am I?” No one responded, so I walked along, still half asleep. Had I been paying attention, I probably wouldn’t have fallen down the cliff. “WAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Wait. I sounded like Mario for a moment there! What the heck is going on!?”
Before anything else could happen, I teleported to… “Bongo Plains?” Now I was really confused. Much more attentive than I was 2 minutes ago, I realized I could hover slowly to the ground by spinning my arms. Weird, Huh? I dropped down carefully and came face to face with a horned figure. Pushing it off was my first instinct, but it overpowered me. I fell down a bottomless pit only to be brought back to the start of Bongo Plains. By then, I was fully awake and realized, “HOW THE *BLAM* DID I GET MYSELF INTO A FAN-GAME!?”
My past experience playing levels hours and hours a day would definitely do me good, but I needed to learn how to do these actions effectively, seeing as I didn’t have a button to magically make me spin or jump ten feet high. Tedious hours of work it took! (much like this chapter) But, then I heard some words that seemed louder than a stampede of elephants crashing a toga party.
“Mode? WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN A LEVEL!?” It was star! Hadn’t he been supposed to check my level!?
“WHAT THE HECK DO I WRITE WITH!!!?”
Not able to hear me, he just tilted his head like a confused look, and clicked on the sign a second time, and then clicked on the writing space. I could communicate!
“Star? I got stuck in here somehow! HALP MEH GET OUT!!! PLLLLLLZ!!!!!
“Lol. Here, let me just add a shine sprite in front of you…. Hmm… that’s weird… all the items are being placed as signs… Hey… So are the tiles! Dude, I think you’re on your own”… Discouraged, I started pacing, trying to think of some way to get back to the real world.
“Can you at least control me?” I asked.
“Okay. That sounded wrong in SOOOO many ways! But ya, I think I can,” Starfawful responded, clearly listening to the wrong kind of stuff.
I found it hard just to let my 2 remaining lives lie in the hands of a 12 year old. He actually wasn’t a bad player. It got close a few times, like I almost died from that mob of enemies after a series of clouds. I remembered Fawful shouted, ”OH GAWD THEY’RE EVERYWHERE,” and that gave me a chuckle, but with no one to see except enemies, the enjoyment soon withered.
Finally, I was at the boss of the level. Yep. You guess it! A Big Bully. It doesn’t sound TOO hard, but when it feels like you’re actually fighting, it’s like “Through the Fire and Flames” on Expert. Ya. Doesn’t sound easy NOW, does it?
”Uhh… 10? I gotta go. Mom’s still kinda pissed at me for playing M&L: Bowser’s Inside Story during my aunt’s wedding… I think its best if I just log out…”
I was REALLY angry now! He left me there right in the middle of a battle with now way of protecting myself! And the worst part… I couldn't express my anger!!! I sighed with disappointment, and spun like mad, just trying to knock my foe off; each, a miserable failure. So I lay down, perfectly aware that the Bully will not damage me, rather, push me to a wall, and thought. Thought about my family and friends back in the real world, if that storm was still raging, and then I thought about how many people must be on by now. “16, 17 maybe… But how many of them are gonna go and play this level?”
CHAPTER 2: Murphy Water(Ninny Novel)
December 30, 5:55 P.M.: Eastern Standard Time
Back in the chat Star’s final words before logging out were unbelievable. To most people anyway.
“ MODE IS STUCK IN BONGO!!! Srsly! I saw him in the Level Designer! Go ahead! Check for yourself, and you'll see his avatar!”
“[sarcasm]ORLY!!!?[/sarcasm]” was the response from many, but one actually believed him. Click, click. Copy. Open New Tab. http://www.runouw.com/games/sm63ldpopup.php? . Click, Click, Paste, and finally, load.
“Let’s see if this is true… Mode? You in there?” “Ayray?” Luck was on my side today! Swift as a tiger, I slid underneath the Bully blocking my way, God knows how, and I wrote on a sign about what I knew about already. “EVERYTHING turns into signs!? Well then, I guess walls won’t be a problem then!” How did Star-fawful not think of that!? No. How did I not think of that!?
He started clicking on the wall to the left. Each tile slowly disintegrated until they were just a row of wordless signs. The new passageway was the perfect size for me to escape! Big enough for me to fit through, yet small enough that my foe couldn’t follow. Ayra designed this level without a way to get to the Sprite after that Boss (or so I thought), so I was lucky that he came along. He led me to the cannon and fired me to the Shine Sprite accordingly. “Finally!” I beamed. “But, shouldn’t I be out of here now?” Suddenly, I saw a flash of light, and my next sight was a sandy hill.
I looked up above my head, expecting to see “The Desert of Power”, but instead, saw “Mushroom Bridge”. Had I played that level before? Who even made it? (PLEASE don’t kill me) Ay took me to the top of the hill, and I saw an ocean blurred by a level transition.(yes I’m perfectly aware that there’s no transition) “Uhhh… Mode? Midnight here in Sweden. I have to go to sleep… Sorry.” And he departed. I sighed.
“I’m gonna have to deal with this every day, won’t I?” I realized no one was there to listen. Alone again.
It feels weird going through a level transition, but I had experience with that in Bongo. It was a sort of relaxing feeling, but at the same time, exhilarating. You feel as though you’re floating, but falling fast at the same time.
I saw a ship not too far off shore. But how do I get aboard? The Deck is like 10 feet higher than my normal height, and I can’t JUMP on water!!! I lunged underneath the somewhat shallow water, and saw a metal structure under the ship. At first, it looked like an anchor, but that was my mind saying that a cage can’t be attached to the bottom of a ship. Here, only “game” logic made sense. One problem though. I haven’t swam in anything for a long time, and my memory of how to swim was fading. PLUS, I’ve never ONCE attempted to swim out in the Atlantic! I had to try it eventually, so I guess now would’ve been the perfect time. “Ehh… I have 2 lives anyway. How hard could this level be?”
Back in the forums, Ayrayen made a topic in the Serious Discussion forums.
Nin10mode
It read,
Fawful speaks the truth. He IS stuck in the level designer! If you don’t believe me, then go to the level “Mushroom Bridge” and TELL ME THAT ISN’T MODE IN THERE! If you want to help him, play like you normally would, and try your best not to die! One more thing. COMMUNICATION IS POSSIBLE!!! Place any item or tile next to him,(it doesn’t matter because they all turn into signs!) then click on the typing space. If he makes it to a DIFFERENT level, please post the level link here!
CHAPTER 3: Why?(Ninny Novel)
December 30, 6:07 P.M.: Eastern Standard Time
Crossing over to Super Mario 63 had its ups and downs. The positives were that the game gifted me with qualities that Mario had. I could jump a lot higher than I could in the real world, and I could survive a fall into lava, provided I had enough hit points. However, hunger and tiredness crossed into the game with me. I didn’t need to eat or sleep, but I still felt the discomfort and agony. Also, I could stay submerged 10 times shorter than usual.
“Wow!” I yelled out of frustration… or just plain anger. “Why the heck can’t I stay under for more than 20 seconds!?” Luckily, there was a nearby floating platform for me to grab onto. “Wait… I can spin to float across the water right?” I asked to myself. I tried successfully, and I “spun” to the ship. All that was just to get a closer look and the “anchor” was indeed a cage. A switch was trapped inside.
Suddenly, I felt a gush of pain in my arm. I looked, but my arm looked fine. When I turned back, a bullet bill was heading straight for me! As I reached for the shore a cheep-cheep blocked my way. My “video-game” logic hadn’t kicked in yet, and of course, I was hit. I noticed though that I was invulnerable for a few seconds after I was hit by one of them. The other passed right through me and was defeated out of nowhere, and I only took 1 hit. As I spun to the shore, I thought to myself, “How come couldn’t I defend myself? Why didn’t I think of spinning? And for god sakes, how the heck do I get back home?” That’s when I suddenly realized, that it’s possible that I could be stuck here forever. Here comes my denial stage… “N—no. I can’t be stuck here! I just can’t! This-all th-this m-must be a dream! Yeah. A-a dream!” Then comes drama… “Wh-why me!? Out of all the users on the site, why ME!?” And finally, acceptance. “*sigh*… Oh well… On the bright side, I live forever as long as I don’t lose my 2 lives.”
“I know that cheep-cheeps aren’t really supposed to be eaten,” I whispered into nowhere, “but might as well try.” I passed through the transition again and back, which made the cheep-cheep reappear. A few twigs were on the ground, (the original tile maker adds WAY too much detail) and I picked them up, pulled my shoelace off and made a fishing pole. “Bait… What can I use for bait?…” I wondered, but then I heard a strange sound from under me… like a… a soft ring. I dipped my head into the water, and saw a blurry star… It was barely visible, but I could tell what it was. I sighed in a disappointed way. I then said, “It’s not worth the risk…”
“Now, come on! You have to!”
Le Gaspos! Moy-Be-Here!(Ninny Novel)
December 30, 6:28 P.M.: Eastern Standard Time
I turned to the right, and saw MessengerOfYahweh. Moy for short.
“You can’t just give up!” he tried to encourage me.
“But I just… can’t… take… the risk,” was my reply, but he came prepared.
“There are tons of spam levels out there with nothing but 1-Up mushrooms. All you need is a good player with too much time to get through this level alone!” Moy had a point there. Alas, my stubbornness kept me arguing.
“Both Ayray and Star left right in the middle of the two levels I’ve been in already. Plus, I don’t even know if getting through all these levels will bring me back home!” I can’t even believe that I wrote that all in one sign.
“Would you rather be here all alone, or try and come back and interact with your friends and family?” Moy asked rhetorically. I paused for a moment, but replied,
“Whatever’s safer. If you can convince me that it’s safe, then I’ll go.”
He was frustrated now! “UGH! Just let me control!” he demanded in a mean tone.
“No!” I said, but I didn’t write it on any sign, so he didn’t hear. He forced me to the water, and into the invisibility star that was under me before. I was dragged to the cage, and barely made it through. I… well, he pushed the button and I saw a pathway in front of the ship.
“Wait,” I said. “Couldn’t you have just used the sign glitch, so I could go right ‘through’ the boat?”
“No.” He replied. ”There’s a silver star in there that you have to get. Sometimes you just have to do it the hard way.”
“Dang! Library time’s up! Mode, whatever you do, don’t give up,” Moy said as if he was in some movie.
“Pshhh, where’d you get ‘that’ line cupcake from?” I joked, but then I saw he’d already left. I turned my attention to a pipe, which seemingly leads to the inside of the vessel. “I’m already here, so might as well beat the level…”
Inside the ship, was small band of enemies. Including a mega cheep-cheep? But beyond that, was that silver star that Moy was talking about. “There’s no way I can do this…” Discouraged, but not discouraged enough that I wouldn’t try, I dropped to the wet floors. “Gah!” I shrieked. One hitpoint already gone. Spinning like mad, most of the enemies we’re already destroyed. There was still that Cheep-cheep, who was jumping in the air trying to strike. A long, loud “Crrrrraaaaaaap…” came out of my mouth, but my foe was gone…
“Hey! Looks like I’m not alone!” There was a voice that wasn’t familiar…
CHAPTER 5: The New Old Guy(Ninny Novel)
December 30th, 6:53pm, Eastern Standard Time
The Mega Cheep-cheep exploded as a stranger approached me. On his back was a Hover Fludd, still recovering.
“Who are you?” I asked the mystery person.
He looked about 18, and he was in a peculiar shape. His hair was gray, and it stuck up in the back of his head. The front looked spick and span though. The one thing I could recognize were the eyes. They were Sonic-Style. Anyway, enough with the details. He replied, “I’m not quite sure if I know my name anymore. Heck, I don’t even know when I got here!” My eyebrows widened when I realized that this guy must’ve been stuck here for months if he forgets his own name.
I hopped up to the star, and when I came down, I questioned him.
“Are you a Runouw.com user?”
“Yep. A couple months.”
“Well… Do you have any idea who your friends were?
“No. All I know is that I woke up in the level designer one day, and I have to find a way out.”
I looked down, trying to think of something thoughtful to say. He’d forgotten so much. “I feel bad for you,” was all I could come up with.
So we exited the ship, now empty, and swam to the shore behind the back of the boat. Across a level transition, I finally saw why this level was called Mushroom Bridge. A little farther, I noticed the bridge was destroyed. “Who mad-“ I stopped, because I remembered. He forgot everything. So instead, I asked, “Did you get the other Silver Stars?”
“All except for three…” was his answer, “which are on the other side of New Toad City, and in the sky.”
“New Toad City???”
“I’ve been in this level for awhile. Never could find a way to get out,” he said, disappointed.
Now I asked, “What Fludds do you have?”
“Only Hover. There’s one caged in an airship, but I could never find an invisibility star that would last long enough.”
“Hitpoints?”
“All eight.”
“Hmm… Lives?”
He sighed. “Only one. Are you done interrogating me?”
“Heh. Yeah, I’m done.”
Before we advanced, I noticed a huge gap in the bridge. “Just run as fast as you can, and jump at the edge. Aim for distance. Not height,” My new ally said, “Or you can take the hover Fludd. So what’ll it be?”
“It’s obvious, isn’t it? Hover Fludd!!!” Well DER, I’m the newb in dis danged’ place. Of course I pick the Fludd. He agreed, and took off his Fludd. He handed it to me, but it was almost empty. I looked for some kind of indicator. It read *5%*. I stared at the teenager, and he started to laugh.
“You really think I’m gonna let you take the easier way?”
One choice left. I ran faster than I thought I could, but I jumped a bit early. The edge of the other side was barely in the reach of my hands, but I grabbed it quite easily! “Tch. Newb,” called out my new ‘friend.’ He jumped, with a perfect landing, and grabbed my one dangling arm. While he pulled me up, I saw three bullet bills right behind him.
“Watch out!” I spun my arms around, the other’s hand still attached, and all three fell to the bottomless pit below.
“God damnit!!!” I looked below and saw him hanging on with one finger. Three more bullet bills behind me, and one closing up on my ally.
Where are the users when you need one?
Chapter 6: Stars of Hope (Star Story)
January 4th, 12:17am, Universal Time
“Oooomnomnom…” I sat up in my bed, and looked at the clock. “It’s already 12:17, and I still can’t stay asleep…” Life’s been hard ever since this storm started. I have a Runouw account. Or, had a Runouw account. Unfortunately, All electricity was shut down. I guess the World Leaders either: 1. Heard what happened to Nin10mode and doesn’t want anyone to find out, or 2. Want to “ensure the safety of the children.”
I turned to the Tv, and clicked on. Nothing. Not even static. “What’re you doing! Up at these hours, trying to turn on the Tv! You knew perfectly well from the news announcement yesterday, that no-electronics are to be touched!”
“Well, what are YOU doing up? It’s not like there’s anything to do that interests you!” I responded to mum.
We came to a compromise and decided to stay up, in candlelight, and play some board games. I tried to fake some enthusiasm, but in the inside, I was really thinking, “God, can’t I just go to the computer? It’s not like I’m gonna die.”
“I miss Runouw.com,” I told her.
“And I miss using the microwave. You’re not the only one who lost something near and dear to you!” She responded, quite jokingly
“Heh… But seriously, I had friends on Runouw. It never got boring! It never got ugly, or hateful.”
“But, they were filled with spammers, remember?”
“Okay. First off, how do you even know what a spammer is? Second, it’s not that bad. Just report them to a mod… “ she looked at me with her ‘try again’ face. “ehem… moderator, and then wait for him to get banned. That’s all!”
Spammers: The common bad guys in a Runouw.com story. Maybe they were to be blamed for at least some of this…
We finished our game in the morning, and the storm was off to another large area someplace east. It would comeback in a few days, but everything was still shutdown. Bloody Hell. I waited for days! No Tv, no video-games… no Runouw… It was getting ridiculous. It was the “Flintstones” except no comedy.
That night, I decided it was time to take action. Somehow, this pandemic storm tied in with the Level Designer Incident. I took my DSi, some snacks from the fridge, and a world map. “Time to sneak out,” I said. I approached the window.
“Can’t let you do that starfawf.” I turned around, no one there. I searched my whole room as if I were in some rescue mission. But… wait. How does this guy know my username? It took a minute of pondering, but when I realized who it was I walked downstairs, as silently as possible, and down into the kitchen. I heard someone snickering. Aypic phayl if he was trying to hide. Anyways, I went up to the fridge, and opened it. When I did, the guy had a clearly surprised look on his face.
I said, “Hi there Buff!”
Chapter 7: Preparation(Star Story)
January 4th, 3:15am, Universal Time
“How did I not notice you there?” I asked . . .well . . . HIM, I guess…
“Beats me,” Buff replied. “Maybe it’s ‘cause I’s too dark for ya’? MY question is, how did that snack you got earlier not get moldy? I mean, c’mon. It was in a powerless fridge for what? 4 days already?” I held up my bag of chips. “Oh… heh…,” he was clearly embarrassed.
Buff continued. “Well, anyway, why do you want to sneak out?”
“Well,” I replied, “I’m gonna figure out if this storm has anything to do with Mode.
“Cheezits Crust! That rumor is not true! How the bloody hell would a normal user like him end up in a Super Mario 63 level!?
“ . . . How the bloody hell can you survive in my fridge? . . .”
“ Touché. Well, I’m not going to stop you if you’re really going to find a connection between the 2 conflicts. I’m not gonna come with you, either, but I’ll give you some advice. I’d try and get the power back on first before I go out on an epic quest during a raging storm if I were you.”
I thought about that for a moment, and then he finished talking: “’Cause you know that DSi won’t do you any good without any power!”
“Heh. Thanks Buff . . .” I was about to leave, but then I turned back at him. “And if I die, You get my pantry too. ;D” And with those words, I climb out the window, my DSi and everything neatly tucked away into my old backpack. “I wonder what mum’ll think when she sees I’m not around…” I tried to keep it out of my mind as I walked through the dark, flooded streets, but I couldn’t help but think that I forgot to leave or say something important. “Perhaps I could’ve left a note for her to find or something… Eh, I’m sure she’ll eventually find Buff and he’ll explain it to her,” I assured myself.
Back at home…
“Sooo… you’re telling me, that my son is out there trying to save his internet friend that miraculously teleported into a silly little videogame? HA! This isn’t fiction boy, why this is real life that we’re dealing with! Now I’ll ask again. Where is he!?” She stared down at him politely, but at the same time, impatiently.
“I only speak the truth, Ma’am.” And just to clarify, this actually IS fiction! He was thinking.
“HEY! No breaking the fourth wall in my story!!! Now start over, INFEDELS!!!” 10 screamed from that little swivel chair he’s sitting on. . . .
I was only on Peabody Ave, roughly 2 miles away from Battersea Power Station. And then I realized: why would they listen to a 13 year old boy? What were even the chances that at least a single worker would be there? Alas, I kept walking along, because I didn’t have much of a choice.
It was an ominous night. No one was out, (gee, I wonder why?) and if you ignore the storm, it was actually a pretty peaceful neighborhood compared to previous times. Then I was confronted.
“Kid, give me that bag. I need it for something,” a tall person, most likely a thug, demanded.
“No! I’m positive that you don’t need this as much as me! Besides! All the stores and shops are closed, and locked up! What’re you going to steal!? Raindrops?”
Now he held me by the neck, at gunpoint. Crap.
Chapter 8: Silver Bullet(Ninny Novel)
December 30th, 7:00pm, Eastern Standard Time
“Ughh… I had to lose a life, but two players are better than one,” I said.
“True dat!” was, surprisingly, my new acquaintances’ response. Usually, he was pretty serious.
“???”
“Sorry. A little excited! I honestly didn’t expect to survive! . . . I guess it’s just my way of saying thanks . . .”
I smiled. “Anytime, dude . . . well . . . anytime I have more than one life. If I’m on my last one, Tch – then you’re screwed! Hah!”
We laughed for a little while until we realized that it was still dangerous on the bridge. So we walked a bit forward until we came across another level transition. Is it safe? - Probably not. But we went through anyway, seeing as we didn’t have much of a choice anyway.
The first thing we saw was a blue brick tower.
“Been there, done that,” the 18 year old confidently said.
He spun right through two bricks, and jumped on top of a green elevator. I promptly followed, but first, I looked up, and barely saw the peak of the building. It seemed to be glowing a light green color. There was something either important, or useful up there, no doubt about it.
“Get on! This is already my fifth time going up!” my friend called. It was clear to me, that he wasn’t yelling out of impatience, but out of anticipation. Was something exciting about to happen?
I jumped on to the elevator, and avoided the silver bullet bills. Pretty easy, now that I think about it. We got to the top, and that’s when I told him about the light on top of the tower.
“Green light? Hm. Must be a 1-up,” he stated. “But there’s no way to get up there. Trust me.”
I looked down underneath the white bone platform we were on and stole a glance at an oncoming bullet bill. I jumped and spun my arms to knock the enemy back down, and in the process, A human size hole erupted from my left side, where the bullet bill had fallen through. I stared upwards at the exit I just created and turned to the hedgehog to say, “No way, huh?”
We hopped through the hole, and up onto the highest rooftop to see four blue coins and a 1-up.
“Listen. I’ve been a pro at this real-life-game thing for several months. I don’t need a second life yet,” my friend said. “Take it.”
“No, no,” I responded. “I had a second life already. Something tells me you should have it this time. Here. Let me give it to you.” I attempted to grab the green mushroom, but instead of staying in my hands, it slowly dissipated into my palms.
“N00B!!!” He started chuckling, and I slapped my face hard with my hand. “Listen,” he calmed down to say. “You needed it anyway.”
I was the first to look down. “An airship’s down there.” I had to squint to see even a glimpse of it, but I knew.
“Don’t worry about that. There’s no star inside.”
We jumped off the bridge simultaneously, and landed right in the middle of a pack of Bullet Bills. Good thing we got those blue coins. Surely, the gray hedgehog would’ve died. We struggled our way through, spinning and blocking. Finally, we got to the roof of the air ship, where I stared certain doom in its face.
My friend – I really should’ve given him a nickname by now – patted my shoulder and whispered, “This is why you needed that extra life.”
Dozens of silver bullets headed straight for us.
In a flash, the hedgehog was sprinting across the bridge. I watched him dodge bill after bill, and reach the transition completely unscathed. I tried to mimic him, but the Bullet bills were too fast for me. I ran into them one by one, and my health quickly depleted. I made it about halfway through, when I died.
As I dropped to the ground, I could see that green light again. It was in some sort of hole in the bridge. I had to go for it when I revived. I came down on a platform and looked down. At least eight bullet bill bases were guarding the mushroom. I still had to learn how to continuously spin. I tried anyway, perfectly aware that I didn’t have the endurance to spin for 30 seconds. But that’s when something extremely miraculous happened.
My arms seemed to automatically spin, and I looked to my right.
“Miss me?” Star-fawful confidently asked.
I slowly descended to the bottom of the hole, and the 1-up vanished into my hands. I guided myself to the transition a couple yards away, and I saw Meta lean on a brick building. StarF must’ve noticed him, because he replaced the “New Toad City” sign with a blank one.
“Who’s your friend?” He asked.
We both shrugged and I wrote on the sign, “We don’t know his name yet. Sorry.”
I leaned on the wall with the hedgehog, and StarF logged out thinking we didn’t need any more help. Or maybe he was busy with something else.
“I think I’ll call you Meta,” I said.
“Meta? Why Meta?”
“Well, because… You’re a silverfish gray, like metal, and you’re twice as fast as Metaknight, from a game I really like. Oh. And you made it through that mob of Bullets completely untouched. You must be pretty persevere, like steel, to do that.”
“Meta…”
