Sonicfan253 and Buff's how to make good stories!

Postby Sonicfan253 » March 11th, 2010, 7:17 pm

Do you want to make a good story? Or are you having trouble with what to do? Just read this guide!

(Mods, If this needs to be moved somewhere, Do it.)

1. Story Needs A Point

So you have decided to write a story? Good. But first you need to have a POINT to your story,

This is an example quote (no one actually wrote this, Im just using this for an example)

Guy wrote: One day splashy ran down the street, He jumped up and down and had good fun. But then he saw a black shadow...

No point, see?
Make something like this:
Guy who edited his story wrote: Splashy decided to take a walk one day, So he ran down the street and had some fun, But then he saw a big dark shadow.....

2. Grammar and Punctuation

You need good grammar and punctuation in your story, Here is an example of a fake story with terrible grammar.
Jak fel from the tre and he bumpd his hed, he was a sad mad hurt. He walkd way from the tre and swim lake

Grammar fix and tada

Jack fell from the tree and bumped his head, He was sad, angry, and hurt. He wondered away from the tree and went for a swim in the lake.

3. Using Symbols

This section tells you all about symbols and what they are for (This section is for beginners)

This symbol is used to list things, or to give the reader a break in the middle of a sentence
Code: Select all
,

This is an exclamation mark, It is used to show a character`s suprise while speaking
Code: Select all
!

This is a question mark. It is used when a character is suprised
Code: Select all
?

This is a period, its used to end a sentence
Code: Select all
.

I think everyone already knows what these are for.....
Code: Select all
+ and -

This is short for "And"
Code: Select all
&

This is a quotation mark, it tells when a person is talking
Code: Select all
 "

4. Reading over a chapter

Usually when you finish a chapter, it has mistakes and its not formatted correctly

Guy wrote:I run down the hill...To my excitment....I saw my freind Jill! "Hey Jill!" I yeled. She loked at me and smiled, "Why helo christoper!" she Replid.

FIX TIME!

Guy wrote:I ran down the hill...To my excitement....I saw my freind Jill! "Hey Jill!" I yelled.
She looked at me and smiled, "Why hello christopher!" she Replied.

5. Making more chapters

You cant just have one chapter and expect it to be enough, Make more! Like this...

Chapter 1. duhduhduhduh

Chapter 2. duhduhduhduh

Chapter 3. duhduhduhduh

Replace duhduhduhduh with your chapter name, and underneath it you write your next chapter

6. Using smilies

So you want to use smilies in your story? Just look at the right of your screen and there are 24 smilies waiting there for you, Just click on one an it will appear where you were last typing. like this: ;)
But like Kimonio said, NEVER abuse the smiley

I like this game!

Use it like this:
I like this game! :)

List of smilies: (See Kimonio`s thread on how to make the smilies)

:D
:)
;)
:(
:o
:?
8-)
:x
:P
:!:
:?:
:|
:geek:
:ugeek:

7. Description
How to use it: .....Obvious, isn't it? With adjectives, verbs, adverbs, etc.

Ex.1: Not descriptive
I ran down the road. I saw my friend. We played. Then I left.

See how crappy and pathetic that is? Here is a good way to write.

Ex.2: DESCRIPTIVE
I was jogging down my street, preparing myself for the city marathon, which would begin tomorrow.

As I ran, my friend Jacob accidentally kicked his new soccer ball over his head(surprisingly impossible after I've seen him play), which I, unaware, tripped over when it rolled in front of me.

Everything went pitch black.

When I awoke, Jacob was standing over me. When he saw me wake up, his expression turned to that of fear."Derek, are you okay? You were bleeding when you hit the road..."

I winced and leaned forward."What the heck was that that hurt me?"

"My new soccer ball. I was going to practice before I went to your house to play against you. But now that you are up, ready for a game?"

I nodded. This would be easy. I've always played soccer since I was five.

After three hours, it was getting dark, and Jacob had already whooped my a** in soccer. I remembered that I still had to finish my job and said my goodbyes.

When I got home, I was ready...

8. Characters

A story is not a story without characters, is it mah boi? No. Heres an example of what a story would be like without characters.

He climbed up a tree when suddenly he saw she! "Hello she!" said he.

Add characters and now its fixed!

Jack climbed up a tree when suddenly he saw Jill! "Hello Jill!" said Jack.

It might be useful to add a list of characters at the top of your story like this:

List of characters!
Zach
Jack
Jill
James

And if the characters have nicknames, You can write it like this:

List of characters!
Mal=Mallary
John=Johnson
Mar=Mario
Weeg=Luigi

9. Making sense

Stories need to make sense, Here is a story that doesnt make sense:

Zed jump up! he fly to moon!

Wut? Here's the proper way.

Zed jumped so high, he reached the moon!

This is something else that doesnt make sense

He drink plastic
O_o

Anyway, thats why your story needs to make sense.

10. Getting Ideas

Getting ideas is not very hard, you just need some thinking time!

Sit somewhere where you can think about ideas. After you are ready, prepare to brainstorm some ideas!

Think about it: "What will my next chapter be about?"

Will it be drama? a shocker? a cliffhanger? or just plain funny. Also, will you introduce more characters? What are their names and personality?

Once you have brainstormed, take a walk outside or watch the news! Who knows, maybe you could get an idea from doing those things!

11. Text Smilies

These are smilies that are made out of letters or symbols.

XD - PWNED or LOLWUT?
=)- Neutral happy face
=/ - Hmm...
=| - Not amused
=O - Suprise
=D - Really happy
=P - Weird
>=( - Mad
>=D - EVIL
;) - Wink
O_O - OMG or WUT?
O_e - Ohmygosh
-_- - Darn
O_o - Ooookkayyy....
D= - OH NOEZ!
8D - Shades
8) - Shades 2
8| - Cool
>8( - Mad shades

Im going to find more...later...

12. Not too hotchpotch!

Everyone likes stories that keep them on the hook! eyes on the screen!

But no one likes to read Hotchpotch stories like this:

Suddenly a building blew up!
Suddenly bob said "Cool"
"Wut?"
Said joe
"COW!"
"HORSE" said joe.
Suddenly joe blew up
Suddenly a robot came!
Suddenly a dog farted
Suddenly bob kicked the robot
Suddenly the robot blew up!

O_O

Who would wanna read that?

Here were the problems:

1. Overuse of "Suddenly"
2. Too much chatting
3. Completelyuniterestingamirite?
4. Wrong spacing and all that

HOTCHPOTCH!

So dont make your stories a hotchpotch!

How to write a story!

Postby Buff_ » March 11th, 2010, 11:59 pm

I have seen some stories around here which frankly aren't very good. I'm not mentioning any names, so here is a simple guide on how to write an interesting story.

Plot
First you have to come up with a plot. Think of something you want to write about, and create a brief story in mind of what is going to happen. Create a beginning, and plot briefly what's going to happen; you can add more while writing, and/or edit it later.

Characters
Create a few characters, their gender, their age, their relationship with other characters etc etc. Afterward, decide their role in the story, i.e protagonist (main character), antagonist(enemy), family etc; and what they do, i.e help protagonist/antagonist, kill, get killed ..etc

Back stories
These aren't essential, but a brief back story for a character would be nice. You could say where they come from, their history, how they go a certain skill etc.

Writing
When you actually start to write, you don't need to go into much detail. I would get the plot down, and add little things to it along the way. Then when you have finished a chapter, you can edit it with all the detail you want. I also suggest using a thesaurus so that you don't repeat the same word too often.

The way you write it is up to you. Do you want it to be serious, funny, factual? It's all your choice.

If you want me to add anything anything else, please suggest something.

I think this would better fit in the actual Stories section. A move it shall be.

Sonicfan253 wrote:(Mods, If this needs to be moved somewhere, Do it.)

That sounded an awful lot like an order. A simple "please" would be appreciated in this sort of situation.

eg.

Nice way wrote:Mods, if this topic needs to be moved somewhere else, could you please do it? :)

or

Nice way wrote:Mods, if this topic is supposed to be somewhere else, feel free to move it? :)

Thank you, come again.

Oh, and good idea with this guide, by the way. :)

A pretty good guide, just be sure that YOU follow it, sonicfan.

Yeah. I've seen your stories. They aren't up to pro level, no offense, but if you follow your own guide, you'll be in the pros section with me, MIC, MOY, Brando, and a few others (Maybe not pro, but really good) in no time :D

This would be good if you hadn't broken your own rules so many times that I

1. Lost track of how many

2. Nearly died of laughter of the irony.
