Epic Upgrade (Demo)

Play here. (Updated 1/5/14.)

I had to come back to it, didn't I?

Well, here it is. A small, functional piece of the game I've been working on for the last 9 days. I'll let the demo do most of the talking; in terms of content, there really isn't anything yet. However, I hope to get a very large portion of the game finished before school resumes; that will make it much easier to come back to the game when I have the time. The sad truth, unfortunately, is that the game will almost certainly die off if I don't make a lot of progress over the break. But we'll see what happens.

As always, feedback and suggestions are completely welcome.

I've updated the game slightly with enemies, although right now they don't do anything.

Edit: Another update! This one has a number of changes, although most are quite subtle:
  • The preloader actually works now.
  • Upgrades that are visible but haven't been bought now have a red background, instead of the dull yellow color from before.
  • Enemies are now red and only take 1 hit to kill. (This is a placeholder for a level system I'm implementing. Over time enemies will get stronger and new enemy types will be introduced.)
  • There are 2 new upgrades.

EDIT 2: More updateness:
  • Three upgrades added.
  • Enemies will not spawn on the far edge of the level anymore.
  • The game now tells you what level you are on. (Right now only levels 1 and 2 exist, although the game will go up to level 3 [and eventually glitch out.])
  • On level 2, an enemy group of 4 will occasionally spawn.
  • The cash given from killing enemies was slightly decreased.

Another update for you guys:
  • One more upgrade added.
  • You can die now. When you do, you will:
    • Temporarily be invincible, and
    • Lose half your cash.
  • Another kind of enemy group was added to level 2.
  • Levels 3 and 4 were added.
  • There is a new enemy type.

Hitboxes. Perhaps implement a more bullet-hell-type shooter and shrink the hitbox if you're not up for making the ship hitboxes more true to the shape?

Well, I'm not going for a bullet hell kind of game, but the pace will definitely pick up in the later levels. I will address the hitbox issue in a later update.

Big update incoming:
  • Four new upgrades were added.
  • The explosion sound was slightly updated.
  • An explosion graphic was added.
  • Levels 5 and 6 were added:
    • Level 5 contains a mini-boss.
    • Every 5 levels will be a mini-boss level, with the final level obviously containing the final boss. Right now I haven't decided how many levels there will be.
  • A new kind of enemy group exists in level 6.

This one took a bit longer than usual to finish up, but it's definitely the biggest update I've made so far.
By the way, if you guys experience any lag, please tell me. I started lagging at around level 4, and I can't seem to find the cause of it. I want to know if it might just be my computer if there is something I missed.

A small update today. I added a quit button in the pause menu and also made a small change to the explosion graphic.

An update on the lag issue. Doram kindly tested the game on his computer and told me that he experienced no issues while playing, so I'm going to make the assumption that nothing is wrong with the game itself and I don't need to look into it.

Edit: Updated again. The preloader actually works now.

Edit 2: More tweaks have been made, and some content has been added as well:
  • A new health drop upgrade has been added: when you buy it, health packs will drop from dead enemies occasionally, but only if you've taken damage.
  • The regeneration speed has been slightly lowered.
  • I actually did this a few updates ago (and just forgot to mention it), but you no longer lose half your cash when you die. Instead, you'll lose between 15 and 35 percent.
  • There was a bug where the Faster Reload upgrade wouldn't properly reset if you quit the game. That's been fixed.
  • There was also a bug where the Shoot Upgrade wouldn't reset properly if you quit before finishing the tutorial. I fixed that as well.
  • If you quit the game, the "Made By Blab" screen won't show up anymore.
  • A small but noticeable change occurs when you pass level 5.
  • Level 7 has been added, and so has a new enemy type.

Another big update! This game is starting to get intense.
  • Levels 8, 9, and 10 were added:
    • Level 8 is similar to 7 in that the enemies speed up as time goes on. Don't let them overwhelm you.
    • Level 9 is just fighting the boss from level 5...five more times. Actually, I found this level to be a nice break from the chaos of level 8.
    • Level 10 is the second boss.
  • Three new upgrades were added:
    • Emergency Health, which makes the chance of a health pack dropping higher when you have less health.
    • Stronger Shooting, which doubles the power of your bullets.
    • Ultra Fast Movement, which significantly increases your movement speed.
  • A new music track was added to the game, but...
  • I also compressed all the music files in the game. The sound difference is practically unnoticeable, and the file size of the game has shrunken by more than half.
  • You can now easily see exactly how much cash an enemy gives you, as well as how much you lose when you die.
  • The title music starts a bit sooner.

Side note: I'm aware that the game lags in the later levels, and I have a plan to fix this in the next update.

Edit: In what will most likely be the last update for quite a while, I've made a few small changes but I've also added one crucial feature:
  • Saving! This was a huge hassle to get implemented, but I really had no choice. Let me know if you find any save issues or bugs.
  • The level 6 enemy groups have been removed.
  • Regeneration has been reduced to $100.

got through level 10 second try with $4397 (nothing like dying and losing $1200)
the level 10 boss was alright

first try I went mostly movement, but that didn't work when I was trying to poke level 7 enemies to death with *just* the first reload upgrade :p
