Beat It 2

Thumbs up x2

Play it here! (Last updated October 26, 2014.)

This is a sequel to my 2013 game, Beat It. While working on Empire Business 2, I decided to take a break and work on another, much smaller project for the time being.

The inspiration from Beat It 2 actually comes from another game attempt of mine. With that in mind, Beat It 2 differs substantially from the original; the game runs on a level system now. There are 5 levels (currently 3 in the demo), and the object of each level is to fill up the XP bar by hitting various "bits." If you fill up the bar by the end of the level, you'll proceed; if not, the level will restart.

Level 3 is reasonably challenging, but I'm planning for levels 4 and 5 to prove especially difficult. On top of this, in vein of Beat It 1's unlockable modes, each time you complete level 5 and beat the game, you will unlock new modes to toy around with. I have 15 secret modes planned, so I hope you enjoy trying to unlock them all.

Anyways, I will update the demo as I make further progress. Let me hear your thoughts and concerns.

Ouch. Can't even beat Level 3. Curse my slow hands. Will beat it tomorrow or the next day or the next day or the next day....

I'm currently working on level 4 right now (about 33% finished), and I can't even do a perfect run of it (hitting all bits successfully). It is incredibly hard. Killswitch, keep working on those hands of yours...

Haha....finally beat Level 3 after about a dozen of tries....

Suggestions:

+ Add a level/game restart button so you don't have to wait if it's a sure-loss. :P
+ If you beat the game in a perfect run, you can access a bonus level.
+ Add a bit that can reduce XP and must be avoided.
+ Include a "boss" bit that uses illusions that can trick you.

likely because of sheer trial and error - BEAT is a rhythm game, and so far this carries no semblance of rhythm

Yes, that is part of the reason why it is so difficult.

I will add a pause button in the future with the ability to exit the game and restart the level. (I'll be sure to add hotkeys as well.)

I have other plans, but I like your thinking.
+ Add a bit that can reduce XP and must be avoided.

Interesting. I will definitely see what I can do.

Illusions? That sounds a bit unfair. A boss is being planned, though.

Also, in the next demo, I might add hotkeys to the main menu so that you can select which level you want right off the bat (1 for level 1, 2 for 2, etc...).

NEW UPDATE IS OUT.

Level 4 has been added, and it is extremely unforgiving. (Don't hit the black circles.) The sudden change in pace is very intentional given how there will only be 5 levels in the whole game. Still, I want to hear your concerns. Do you think some parts are too hard/cheap right now? If you strongly believe that certain bit patterns are just unfair, let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Additionally, from the start menu, you can press 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 on your keyboard to jump immediately to which level you want (although be aware that level 5 does not exist yet). Obviously this feature won't exist in the full release, but I figured you might like to skip levels that you've seen already.

For the next demo, I'll get level 5 out (perhaps in its completion, perhaps not - I'm planning to design a boss, which will probably take some time). I might also get around to fitting in a pause feature, but I mostly want to spend my efforts on level design right now. Anyways, that's all for now.

Slight discrepancy: within BEAT, every hit of a bouncing beat counts, not just the final one

What do you mean? I'm slightly confused.

Edit: Oh, I see what you're saying. That was an intentional choice. Do you think I should change it?
