Halloween Mini-LDC: 2014 Edition

Re: Halloween Mini-LDC: 2014 Edition

SHIIIIIIIIIT AGAIIIIIIIIIIIN

THE LAST TWO DOORS ARE MALFUNCTIONING

may I fix that? I mean, other than the 27th LDC, I saw this right this morning. And I mean, Nwolf was allowed to fix his misplaced start position one day after the deadline.

♥♥♥♥ my life. I had to rush this so much and yesterday I was so busy that I couldn't playtest everything from the start to the end, I only could check the last elevator if its passable or not, and I've exited back to the designer once I've reached the top because I had to be really, really, fast.

Generally, such "little errors" like malfunctioning doors/pipes, misplaced start positions etc. should be allowed to fix one day after the deadline, after announcing that.

EDIT1: I guess Yuri's unfinished entrant shouldn't be judged.

EDIT2: Thank you Trippy J for not putting your joke level code into spoiler tags, you've dismayed me. :omg:

EDIT3: Only three completed entries, so probably a bacon for the winner and no trophies

EDIT4: Trippy J has put in spoiler tags, and the vault is closed.

1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

I'm not that sure, your level also has some strong points, and even half less loading time than mine.

And this mistake bothers me nonetheless because it happens for the second time. Though the circumstances are different, I'm still a bit ashamed of myself making such a mistake.

We'll judge any level that's in the vault, finished or unfinished. But as I don't have a full judging panel (and I need to drop out of judging anyway) and this is only a mini-LDC, I'm thinking I might just follow the tradition of the Halloween forum and set up a poll so everyone has a chance to vote for their favourites. (obviously trusting that people won't just vote for themselves, but hey, it's the same sort of thing every year)

This also includes the fact that I simply haven't got the time to do anything like this, as I'm already organising everything in this forum and have a looot of stuff to do on my agenda in RL. And if anyone wants a full judging or score for their levels then they can request one from someone.

The mini-contests got barely any attention this year so I'm struggling to think of how I'm going to reward the winners or entrants. I don't want to give out bacons or even cookies so freely. I wish we had some seasonal medals or something, but I'll work something out.

~MIDI Minimizer~ wrote:We'll judge any level that's in the vault, finished or unfinished.

For example, Nan's Turbo Beach in the 27th LDC hasn't been judged, and it's generally quite pointless to judge a single level that is only 50% complete or even less.

I've already judged the two other levels. Setting up a poll isn't really fair IMO, as many unexperienced players can't judge levels properly and find differences between two levels that are equipollent at first sight. Before we do this, we should really ask around for some more people to judge the three levels.

And as duels are only restricted to two entrants and the winner usually gets a cookie, there should also be a cookie in here, at least.

EDIT: Now I've seen that there have been bacons for the pumpkin search. I mean, what do you do there? "Just" searching. But here, we've been designing levels for a total of one week. So that doesn't fit together.

Well, I just discovered I'm definitely not good with short deadlines. :P

Anyway, good luck for all the others, because I already know I'll be dead last. Go Shroom, I'm rooting forr you this time!

edit: As for your question about judging unfinished entries, I see no problem actually, pretty much because even though they are unfinished, and will most likely not place, I'm sure the creators would like some feedback. c'mon, I want to know if I made good use of the layering :c

People won bacons because it was a trick or treat event that hasn't been used for 3 years that I wanted to revive and as we have no seasonal medals this is what I have awarded them.

In the past when we've had very small LDCs we have judged extremely incomplete entries, even in official ones, like the 16th.

The tradition of this forum is that a poll is set up for mini-contests, if more people want to judge then I'll allow them to but so far we have one judge as I'm having to drop out. So if we can't find anyone else and people are refusing a poll we'll basically be in a situation where no-one wins which I'm sure nobody wants.

I'm afraid you don't call the shots here and I have done a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure that this Halloween beats last year's. (as last year's was pretty ♥♥♥♥ lol)

I'd suggest that if noone else is willing to judge until tomorrow, we set up the poll at November 3rd. I'm sure someone not involved in the contest will vote.

And of course it's not your fault that the mini-contests got so few attention.

AAAND some other flaws found. I mean, they were already fixed if I'd just had time to playtest them before.

In case the poll is coming: PLEASE play the portal version, where these flaws are fixed. Shroom says thanks.
