Halloween Mini-LDC: 2014 Edition

Re: Halloween Mini-LDC: 2014 Edition

Postby Supershroom » November 7th, 2014, 5:13 am

Before you say that any of the elevators (and anything else in general) would be impossible, it's fully possible and I request you to try ceaselessly until you get it right. Also before you say something like "in the water part the bullet bills get out of sight and don't fire anymore, I can't go up", it's fully intentional to leave the water with the help of the boos.

And for the bugs, please just give me a point deduction in "Other". It doesn't have anything to do with the "Fun" category.

And btw my joke judging for Trippy J should be one of the most hilarious ones of all time :awe:

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Is this still ♥♥♥♥ going on

Is Shroom still gonna dictate how others are allowed to judge his levels and is Harmless still gonna feed the troll?

It was entertaining and empowering at first but now I'm just worried a Gang War is gonna happen.

sorry for the double post but

I can't seem to load Shroom's level. At all. I've waited a grand total of 10-15 minutes and tried three different methods of loading the level, none of them worked.

It isn't but of course I don't want it to happen again.

I don't know why my level can't be loaded. You say you have a not-so-bad computer but my good computer can load it without problems in 10-15 seconds. Even the crappy ones at my university can load it with 2 crash warnings or so. And the download version doesn't work either?

Memento Mori Inc. wrote:Is Shroom still gonna dictate how others are allowed to judge his levels and is Harmless still gonna feed the troll?

I only want a fair judging, like everyone else wants it. And if a judge thinks there is a bug where there is none and takes points away for it, it's simply unfair.

They might not take away points because it was a bug. But if you have to keep re-trying over and over, then it will lower fun score anyway. Difficulty can be good fun but if it doesn't seem actually possible or it is very buggy or it got heavily in the way of the flow of the level, then the judge has the right to take away points for that if it personally bothered them.

I haven't actually played Shroom's level yet so I'm not judging off anything, I don't know what your level will be like. But if the judge lowers point because it's too hard or frustrating, then that's not unfair judging.

I try to make my levels hard but not ultra-frustrating like e.g. Nin's Extraterrestra. And this level still got not so bad fun scores, in fact they were 7, 7, 7.75 and 8.

Off-topic stuff in this spoiler: show
I know I shouldn't talk about that 27th LDC past stuff, yet I'd like to take my entry as an example. First level, no difficulty of course, so why no fun either? Second level, okay the first trial may take one or two tries, but no more. I can play it very well, I don't have a problem in surviving the boat ride, and at the boat chase, it's good that you can wait for the boat if you don't catch it instead of restarting, but you're willed to catch the boat, so you're also thrilled. Profit! Then the last level. The blue and green trials are a kind of a cakewalk. The other ones may take some tries, and it can be a bit annoying to go through all of the rooms, but you can definitely do it. I've tried that out. And you have "checkpoints" by completing every trial only once. The boss battle, despite that its pipes were malfunctioning, was a great one anyways, both innovative, fun and thrilling. I was very pleasured testing it. So why did I only get an 1.5/10? Compared to Nin's scores, where you might try over and over and over and almost ragequit?

I mean, on one side MIDI is right, but on the other side a judge has to value the difficulty of a level in comparison to his skills. If you don't have skills, you better not judge. If a level is truly difficult, but it's still appealing to try single challenges or so and test your skills, you still have to give it a score like 6 or 7 or more - Nin's level again is a perfect example of that.

Also I admit that I've clearly overestimated myself in this mini-LDC - in fact, after I've seen this elevator stuff in Volkove's Parallel Spires, where it was pretty unchallenging, I started to think how to make this thrilling and fascinating - e.g. by disabling the horizontal movement etc. But I've never thought it would be this arduous. I was pretty tired the days after the deadline.

First of.
It's generally dangerous to compare levels, especially if you're going for two levels so different that it's almost hurting.
These were for once different times and different judges back then. You cannot ever expect to get a objective judging on this site.
People are (most of the time) trying to get close to that. But in the end this won't going to happen to the level you're expecting.

Judgings here are bluntly told, vague opinions of level designers who're more or less experienced with general level design.
It's up to you how serious you're taking them. But picking on them won't help anyone. Neither you, nor others.
You may go for constructive criticism regarding their judging style, but from what I could gather you're still going for complaining and other inappropiate behaviours. And you'd also need to be certain of what's correct. As you'd most likely end up forcing your own subjective view on others.

Judging from the level of review you're expecting, you may consider to go for a more complicate LDer and it's community or find more official contests to join. Or if that sounds too off for you, ask a judge you're viewing as 'ok' and ask him/her to judge your level. I dare to say that people are making no big deal about occasional review requests via PM. Right, guys? If you're instead seriously needing to win or want one of these shiny virtual medals, I'm honestly questioning your reasons for LDing.

Back to the comparing levels for arguments part. If I'd ever happen to see someone using my level for an argument like you just did, I'd send him to hell myself. That's one of the points, fun ends for me.
