2010 was an extremely... mediocre year for music. Or, more accurately, either freaking epic or Jesus-stop-it. So what were the best/worst songs of the year?
Pop Best: Hmm... There's a song that I've liked consistently for the entirety of 2010 from a band I've listened to without getting sick of this year and past years. America as well, as shown by Billboard Charts, have had this song in their top 20-30 for the past half year straight, a high and long run for the year.
Secrets-OneRepublic
Yeah, you all saw this coming, didn't you? But this song was really one of those songs that snuck up on America. No one mentions it among the best but everyone still loves it. It's on commercials everywhere as well as movie trailers, more exclusively The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The song doesn't necessarily fit in with the movie, apparently the movie director just loved the song.
What makes me want to give this song its spotlight is that it's literally not even slightly like any other song on the radio this year, and it stands to mention that OneRepublic considers themselves a genreless band. This could either go good or bad for them in terms of fame and recognition, but it went well, and it vastly improves their skill. If this were to be somehow genretized, it would be labeled Classical-Pop, somewhat to 2008's critically acclaimed Coldplay song, Vida La Vida Which appeared on nearly every decade-best list, even peaking on one.
The Lyrics are rather intelligent. They are slightly obscure, but have a philosophical beauty among them. It's an interesting and kind of crazy story, classily streamlined into the music. And the music? The Cello is brilliantly done, as well as the other stringed instruments, so well done that I actually could have sworn they were sampling some classical work upon my first hearing. Rythmn and Drum I find to be one of OneRepublic's greatest talents, like the late 09/early 10 single All The Right Moves, and it shows to a seemingly simplistic yet very great drum/clap beat.
I was disappointed to see that this one was not nominated for a Grammy despite its amazing reputation and critical acclaim. In fact, although it's considered really good, it's sadly never among the year's best. It rightfully deserves its spotlight, and it is m number 1 song this year.
Other Pop Favorites That ALMOST Made it to #1
VV Brown-Shark in The Water
Cee-Lo Green-F**k You
Train-Hey Soul Sister
BoB- Don't Let Me Fall
P!nk-Raise Your Glass
Worst Song of 2010- Now this song is not so much bad because of it as itself, it is, but that's not the point. It's bad because it marketed itself as something it was most DEFINITELY not.
California Gurls-Katy Perry Feat Snoop Dogg
This is not among the world's worst, but I'm really pissed at it. I was promised "West Coast's Empire State of Mind", Empire State of Mind being a clever rap about New York City and its flaws and brilliances, and why it and its citizens are unstoppable. It gave actual reasons. This song's reason for California being the best?
The girls are hot.
Okay, granted, when I saw "Katy Perry ft Snoop Dogg" I should have expected crap as it is, but you're marketing this as THE Anthem of The West? My God, The California TOURIST commercials have more substance than you! Screw the beauty of California, the glamour and desolation of Hollywood, and those other two little states above California, the West Coast anthem is just that the girls are hot. How freaking shallow can you get?
And worse yet, people started kissing this song's butt and declaring it THE West Coast's anthem. You couldn't get a video of California and the West Coast without this BS song playing. And for generations to come, this song is going to be the description of the West Coast for everyone. This kinda pisses me off.
And even as a song, it's not very diverse, it's just saying "California girls are hot" over and over in 20 different ways. It's like brainwashing. And the beat seems like a differently pitched version of another crappy song of 2010, Tik Tok by Ke$ha. This song just was bad, but to be glorified as the best of the year? The SONG of 2010? I want a freaking recount! I call redo on this song! Let the guys in Alternative handle this!
Other bad songs of 2010:
Bottoms Up-Trey Songz ft Nicki Minaj (she herself is good, but the ♥♥♥♥ of the rest of the song makes up for it)
A ton of other stuff that is so bad I forget it.
Alternative music coming soon. If this needs to be moved, MOVE it. Don't, for the love of god, lock it.
