Stating the obvious

Postby Niicola » April 30th, 2016, 3:47 pm

To keep things short, I have the feeling Last Legacy is getting less and less attention.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm wrong but... compared to the Sm63 activity it almost looks like this game already belongs to the past eventhough it is 5 years younger.
I know there are still some ongoing duels, and I guess some people can't post levels because they're getting busy, while some other ones are still level designing from times to times, but that's it. 25 levels were posted on Sm63 level portal since April 14th, 2016.
Meanwhile, one LL level has been posted, only on the official website (there's not much going on there too) and since it wasn't finished, it has been disapproved so it doesn't count.
Here, the Last Legacy General Forum is absolutely quiet. The most recent post is from last Summer and it's by me.

I'm not complaining, I'm just saying.

With a lack of tangible updates, and the unneccessary split between runouw.com and lastlegacy.us, I'm not surprised.

Not only that, but a lot of people are confortable with SM63's simplicity and don't want to learn how LL works. Some sort of ingame guide or tutorial could help with that.

It's not dead. I'm actually getting into LL and had a level in progress, LL levels generally takes longer to do because of its complexity. I just don't have the time to fully finish it yet. When I do, I'm not sure if I should post it here or the other site or both.

Just saying, but I think one of the reasons SM63 gets more levels is because Super Mario 63 is a Mario game. People will find it if they're a Mario fan because they'll likely search for Mario flash games. That's how I found this place and I'm guessing it's how the majority did. But Last Legacy is original and nobody will search for that without knowing its existence. That means there will be less of the occasional random newbie levels for LL, which are probably what makes up the majority of the 25 SM63 levels you mentioned. It's a bad thing and I hate that, because original games are definitely better than fan games.

I've seen several new members (typically with Mario-related usernames) who joined only to post a Super Mario 63 level and then either leave or at least stay but only ever posts more SM63 levels. Considering I've seen a person post his SM63 level in the wrong section twice and the fact it's a sub-sub-forum, I guess it's pretty easy for some people to miss the supposedly obvious portals on the main page (aka LL's existence). Perhaps they totally didn't notice the existence of LL? Perhaps it needs more exposure.
I think adding some kind of link to LL within SM63 itself might work, though I know SM63 won't be getting any updates, especially not just to add a link.

Bear in mind that SM63 is from an era where everyone and their dog was making a flash game. When Newgrounds was the pinnacle of the elite talent.

Now Flash is obselete, and the indies have to fight for their place on the pedastal. This involves marketing, media, maybe even buying an ad for a popular website. Social media, greenlight, you name it.

IMO if LL had a better trailer and actual video playthroughs, maybe people would be interested. Atm, it's one of those lesser known games.

I think it's too late. Thousands of people discovered and loved this game when it went to Newgrounds (seriously, look at the comments there) but a lot of people finished the story mode, made what... one or two levels for themselves or their friends and then, logically, stopped playing looking for another game.
If there were a tutorial showing the basics of level designing with a link to a more complete one on Runouw, saying "Hey you seem to like this game. Did you know a community of people like you lies here! Why don't you show them your levels? :D ", or if the level portal would have been visible in game at the time (as it was back then in 2009 with Sm63 and that's the reason I'm here), then much more people would be here now.

The level designer should be the focus of the game, personally. Story mode is something gimmicky that I didn't care for at all.

Hey guys, please don't be so pessimistic ...

I don't think it really matters that this subforum barely gets any posts. It exists before lastlegacy.us was made, and I don't think the split is unnecessary at all, not only because I'm staff there. It's quiet but it still has a purpose.

A tutorial exists oc, and it has quadruply as many views than it has here. And the usually lower presence of people only posting poor levels and then leaving (even if I still come to disapprove a few) is an advantage. LL getting more exposure here is definitely a point though; the subforum's descriptions still aren't up-to-date since we did the reorganization in January.

And most importantly, LL is being developped by people like Runouw, BY etc. who have many other duties to fulfil, so it's not surprising that it's a slow process. Newer Super Mario Bros Wii took 3 years by people who probably had much more free time. Overall, there is still a bigger future to come.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Yeah, I thought we had succeeded in making this abundantly clear to the game's management team, and was under the impression they were seriously considering addressing at least one of these issues (likely the updates, given how easy they would be to do). Unfortunately, in the absence of either, they aren't making it easy to avoid sliding into a pessimistic attitude.
