Well, it's waaaaaay easier than that. All you have to do is to make some building using the Tiles, select the area and then click on the Create Block or Create Planet buttons that are close to the "Select"/"Eraser" checkboxes.

It's a little bit more complicated to make planets, since they work on a different way, but take a look at this snapshot:

I can create a normal planet making rectangles, and their size will vary on the height.

You can also play around with the Planet function, and create different buildings, transforming them into planets, and seeing the results. It's mostly a matter of trial and error.

What's the color formula for making front tiles/blocks look like back tiles?

I usually use Brightness at -7.5, Contrast at -30 and Saturation at -5.

Main issue is when working with colors other than the default. Tints also get in the way.
