I think a nameless character is fine.

Why don't we go the RPG way and make the player be able to name the char whatever s/he wants?

That's kinda what I meant.

When making SM63 levels, I always found it hard to use Mario as someone other than that Italian plumber with the jumps of 10 basketball players. I'd rather keep this original character nameless, so we can place whatever meanings we want on him and not have it contradict what other levels label him as. I know, it's easy to ignore something stupid like that, but I think a nameless character for the storyline would be best, so some of us don't feel restricted to his name and what he did in the storyline, whatever it may be, if it will have one.

Pretty much this.
In LoZ, the main character has an official name, but people still can name him whatever they want.
That's what I would like LL to be.
