I'm about to get something started. But some recent troubles + being busy in RL + lack of ideas, make it a bit difficult right now. No procrastinating, I hope. If not I'm always able to throw in, one hopefully good but small level.

Since Raz mentioned judges, I will bring up that a system for judging is required.

I do not say that an /10 would not work, but maybe thinking of different number classes would be better. At least that is what I think.

Categorisation is fine and it would be good for quick glances, I'm just not sure adding up the different scores to make a large one is the best way of showing which levels are the best to play.

"Categorization" is spell with a "z" dangit >:(

The phrase "best to play" is subjective. While "most well-designed" might also be subjective, there are guidelines if nothing else. Some random person might think the best level to play is any given level from Kaizo Mario World. That doesn't mean those level are inherently well-designed though, or inherently not (I say this because I forget if it has any decently-designed levels in terms of pure gameplay and not visuals). The thing about games is that level design is as important as how fun that same game is. The two don't go necessarily hand-in-hand though. Fun is subjective as all get, regardless of how well-designed a level is. While adding a "Design" category would obviously require the judges have some knowledge of what's considered good level design, at least in my opinion, that's missing. Also, Fun and design aren't mutually exclusive, as bad game-design can and will get in the way of having fun for some people. Also in my opinion, a well-designed level is as important as how fun a level is. for reasons I just stated. I wouldn't mind a system where 30 points are split into 10 Design, 10 Fun, 5 Style and 5 Other. Any other opinions?

Edit:
Buffooner wrote:Also, while you mentioned that design and fun "don't go hand-in-hand", there are some cross overs. A badly designed level could very well be the reason why someone didn't enjoy it, ie enemy spam/tedious health, enemy placement.

Didn't I just say the same thing but with less detail?

JSlayerXero wrote:Also in my opinion, a well-designed level is as important as how fun a level is. The main reason for this is that bad game-design can and will get in the way of having fun for some people.

Yeah, I just said that. Go figure. I should probably go re-word that though.

Edit2: If you want to move this I would suggest moving it to Site Discussion since this isn't related to SM63 or LL exclusively.

British spelling uses s. :P

This has been gone over before, but Other really needs to be definitely defined. I would think that it would definitely include bugs, but at the same time bugs can severely reduce fun. Also, while you mentioned that design and fun "don't go hand-in-hand", there are some cross overs. A badly designed level could very well be the reason why someone didn't enjoy it, ie enemy spam/tedious health, enemy placement.

May I also suggest we move this to another thread? While it is to do with this contest, it's also for all contests' judging.

Ok, I just got back from being away, and I have read all of your discussions. I am currently working on a new judging system for LL, taking into account all your comments. I will post it in The Judging System thread when it's complete.

Also, "Design" encompasses every aspect of a level; graphics, gameplay, etc.

In terms of my level itself, I have a similar predicament as -KT. My level hasn't been started yet due to RL stuff.

The main post says it's hosted by BY and I..i can't change it without him. :l

Disclaimer: none of these messages have been edited, context can be provided if needed (thanks discord!) but absolutely does not change anything about these messages and that he's too overly defensive and cocky to make situations better

Karyete: I don't have anything to say to you, I've been deliberately trying to not offend you for years, actually, but apparently everything I say to you is wrong. You come across as so aggressive that you successfully intimidated me into not wanting to talk to you
Karyete: Seriously, what is your problem? And not only that, you fail to even acknowledge you might be in some wrong here.
Karyete: Oooh it's you? Hello. Feel free to drop this right now. You're going to make yourself look like an idiot.
Karyete: We don't want to hear your opinion at this stage.
Karyete: You're not getting any apology, especially after now.
Karyete: You can stay up on your high horse, continue to twist the truth and act like an absolute child all you want. I refuse to give respect to a man who right now is picking up a dropped argument because he simply cannot fathom the idea that he might be in the wrong.
Karyete: How pathetic

Don't worry about me there. I'd rather get judges and do it like every other LDC too. I mentioned that before. If you want to change it then do so. : )

How About We Have Something Like This, but maybe slightly modified to balance out points.

Originality - (20 points) - How original the level is, how innovative they were with either the level itself, What the level is about, What is done within the level, or A story of some sort. This should not include "How Amazing the switch and trigger usage is", that would go within Gameplay.
- (10 points) - Original use of background, enemies, blocks, graphic transitions that would blow most minds, original ideas that have not been used for levels before, or an interesting twist on a common level type.
- (10 points) - Original use of switches, triggers, events, delta powers, weather effects, enemies, etc. (things not mentioned above)

Gameplay - (20 points) - Stuff that just amazes your brain, and makes the level fun to play. The difficulty fits the level itself, but isn't such that it will annoy people to a point of giving up, but makes them want to keep trying until they get it, and gives them a feeling of satisfaction when they finally beat the level. The Level stays consistent, and doesn't just suddenly have a castle surrounded by lava moats next to a grass field(or in this case, a Castle in the Sky with lava falling from it, surrounded by a bunch of bright, happy clouds)
- (5 points) - Mechanics - Use of Delta Powers, other special objects (delta orbs, delta modifiers, gravity direction, planets, moving blocks, etcetera)
- (5 points) - Satisfaction - How satisfied the player is when he finishes the level, how much of a sense of accomplishment they gain from knowing that they beat the level.
- (5 points) - Flow - Smooth transitions between different moods within the level, or if there is no sudden change in the style, staying consistent.
- (5 points) - Scenery - How well the background is used, whether the music fits, whether the decorations fit or not, etc.

Motif(Theme) - (10 points) - How well the level uses the theme of the contest to it's advantage, and how well it uses the specific traits of said theme.

For a total of 50 possible points.
