you mean provide an alternate experience for those who think making armour and killing things just isn't a wide enough scope of gameplay

Would I sound crazy if I said I'm considering only grabbing TiC and using it in vanilla? Would I have any issues?

No, Tinkers' should work fine as a standalone - most mods are designed standalone and just provide extra compatibility with other mods

EDIT: Seems it's a problem with TiC, it does say the 1.7.2 versions are alpha. I tried the 1.6.4 version and it works pretty much perfectly, so I'm going to wait until a full 1.7.2 release comes out before I use it.

I do have to say TiC is one of my favorite mods out there next to InvTweaks, bspkrs' hud mods, and of course OptiFine. IC2 is cool and all but doesn't really fit in vanilla, it should stay bundled with the other FTB mods IMO.
