The First Day

For the Fast People
As soon as you spawn, punch wood. One tree should be sufficient. Take the log, press E, put it into the crafting grid, and take out the resulting four planks. Put those in a 2x2 square, and you have a workbench. Plop it anywhere that's generally a clearing, and craft the following:
One wooden pickaxe (two sticks in the middle bottom and center, and three planks at the top)
One wooden axe (optional, but it uses the same layout for sticks and wooden planks in the middle-left, top-left corner and top-middle).
As soon as you're done, dig a diagonal staircase down, and get eight stone with your pickaxe. Rush back up, craft it into a furnace (fill the crafting grid with stone except for the center), and plonk the furnace down. If you have any leftover planks or sticks, chop down a piece of wood (again), put it in the top slot of the furnace, and put the wood or the sticks in the bottom slot. You get a piece of coal, so craft it into four torches (stick at the bottom, coal above it). Now, use the rest of your wood (chop more if necessary) to make a little hut. The inside should ideally be a 2x2 space for the hurried, or a 3x3 space. I normally go for an 8x3 space, but that's because I'm a daredevil. Make sure the roof is two blocks high, otherwise there's no point in trying to get in.
OK, have you done the hut? It should just be getting dark now, so get outside, two more pieces of wood (god, so much wood), craft into wooden planks, and make a door (a 3x2 vertical rectangle), and shove it in the doorway of your hut. Take the torches you made, and put them on the inside walls.

Make sure you have your furnace and workbench.

Stay away from the corners, open your inventory, and pop off for a ten-minute break to pass the night.
Once you're back, the sun should be rising, so wait. You should hear some clicking sounds and gnashing, which is zombies and skeletons burning.

Once they're over, carefully open the door (watch out for spiders or creepers), and you'll be greeted with a new day, and ten more minutes of building. Yay!

For the slowcoaches
When you spawn, punch wood. Lots and lots of wood.
Has half the day gone by? Good. Make yourself a hut (as big as you want), and get inside it.

Ooh, it's dark, isn't it? Go and mine some stone or find a coal deposit, and you should get some coal. Pop back out (it should be night-time, hopefully the entrance to your mine isn't too far) and make torches. Now, go inside...

Hopefully, there aren't any mobs. If there are, punch them. If it's a creeper, run out of the doorway, dig a three-block hole, cover the top, and spend the night nomad-style. If there aren't any mobs, light up the place, and you're done. That's the first night.
