I can't install the pre-release

Yeah, see, I downloaded the prerelease, but I was given something that looked more like a texture pack and no minecraft.jar. Is that supposed to happen? If it is, how do I install it?

By "given something that looked more like a texture pack and no minecraft.jar", do you mean a .zip file? If so, just use something like 7-zip to change it into a .jar file.

Yeah, I got a .zip.

Oh and by the way how do I convert it into a jar

Well, if you have 7-zip or WinRAR, you can change the type of file it is by going into the program and renaming the file, or at least that's how my version of 7-zip works.

I used to use an older version of 7-zip, and I don't remember how it worked, and I haven't used WinRAR yet so if you use that it would be very difficult for me to help there.

EDIT: Oh, if you happen to have TeamViewer 8, I might be able to assist you faster. If you don't feel comfortable with me taking control of your computer momentarily, then you don't have to.
