That's probably the thing I'm going to do.
When Sticker Star was announced, I tried to be reasonable. I knew it was going to be different but I was ready to give it a chance because "Who knows? Maybe I'll like the game despite been different". But when I got the game, I was able to give it a proper judgement and boy, it wasn't pretty.
Lets get back to the point I made earlier and look at the games of the series.
1. The paper aspect
One of the interesting effects that the paper visuals gave me was that of a storybook with pop-out pictures. While TTYD used that aspect in clever ways, its kept it out of the context of the story, allowing it to go ahead with annoying aspects that ruined the flow of the story or the immersion into that world.
Sticker Star brought the paper aspect too far with the stickers. The stickers had too much impact on the world itself, restraining the possibilities AROUND them. And from what I saw, Color Splash is going to do the SAME FRIGGING THING, but with colors.
2. The battles
While TTYD had turn-based battles like in my classic rpgs, the total chaos caused by the theater aspect of the battle. While SPM went to the platformer side, it managed to keep things interresting with focus on exploration albeit been a liiiiiiiiiiiiiittle linear.
Meanwhile, SS limited your actions with stickers which is the equivalent of items. The battles themselves were useless because you gained no XP and not nearly enough coins to purchase back the stickers used. And them you have the boss battle that you start without knowing what they are weak to and getting berated afterward for not using their weakness that you COULDN'T of KNOWN BEFOREHAND. Color Splash may do things differently with reusable cards that can be filled with ink but it also looks like there is still no XP (I have checked the japanese trailer)
3 The world itself
If it wasnt form my good memory for videogames, I probably wouldnt keep in mind the world of Sticker Star. While TTYD and SPM had worlds that were unique interpretation of Mario stamples, SS took the strict minimum and ran with it.
I'm also going to had a fourth point: the characters.
WHY. JUST WHY DID THEY REPLACED THE UNIQUE CHARACTERS BY GENERIC TOWNSPEOPLE. WITH THE SOLE UNIQUE PERSON BEEN BOTH ANNOYING AND USELESS?
Anyway, unless they managed to make a complete 180 to my thoughts, I wont buy the game. I did the same thing about the Mario Party and Tennis series.
