But does it? Personally, I thought it was great. The Hard mode was actually hard, and the bosses had epicness to spare. Yeah, the cutscenes were really long, and Samus monotones throughout the whole thing (with the exception of meeting Ridley), but I thought Nintendo had established months before the release that it was going to be more "story-centered". I'm sorry, but knowing that, you can expect to be disappointed.
And then you get people who overanalyze everything. I talked to this guy who was convinced that Adam represented Samus' freedom. Yeah. Then people were rapping on Ridley, and MB, saying that it all makes no sense that Ridley recognizes Samus if he's just a clone. I found it perfectly coherent, if you play right to the end. Yes, you occasionally need to extrapolate, or make an educated guess from the other games. Yes, I was let down by the ending. Yes, the other Galactic Federation guys are one-sided characters with no real purpose. No, it's not one of the greatest games I've ever played, but neither is it the worst.
I think Nintendo did a great job with what they were given. Seriously, I dare anybody to write up a one page account of Samus' history, using only what information can be found in the Metroid games. It might be possible, but I'm not going to waste a week of my life only to realize that it's not worth the trouble. Nintendo took that trouble and made a pretty sweet game - and for that I think something should be said.
