Don't worry, your favorite site won't go down completly like reddit or Wikipedia. We're just doing a partial blackout, literally. First one to get annoyed wins.(Note: as this is not supported on Internet Explorer, this script has something else for it. Dunno what since I don't have IE here. Act surprised.)What SOPA is, you ask?The stated intent of the SOPA bills, which are currently being discussed in America, is to help law enforcers and copyright holders to stop illegal distribution of their IP. The problem is that it won't reduce piracy, but liberty. Pirates will still find a way, but normal people will be severly limited on the internet.
What does happen to you if the bill is passed? If you are American, any site can be blocked from your accessing it.
If you aren't, you will still feel the effects, because sites based in the US, including Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and *gasp* Runouw.com will have to censor a lot.
And even non-US sites have to heavily censor, as just one link to an offending domain will cut them off from the US internet - blocking a lot of revenue coming from there.
Also Runouw.com will most likely be quickly taken down. Super Mario 63, is, as the name states, a fangame, and thus uses intellectual properties by Nintendo.
What can you do?If you are American, go to
http://americancensorship.org/ and complete the "Take Action Checklist". Let your representatives know SOPA is not okay.
If you aren't, you are not out of danger! There is ACTA, a multi-national agreement with similar goals as SOPA.
Read about it, then
do something about it!
