I'm referring to what MP3 suggested.

MP3 Amplifier wrote:Yeah, fair point.

Or we could have a limit of 1 spoiler in a sig- I mean I've seen some sigs with hundreds of spoilers in them.

Try verifying what you're talking about, guys; the rules or my post.

I have a reasonable solution that will be a decent compromise for both.

I've noticed that on one hand, people need a place for all their stuff, and disallowing space and spoilers will massively inhibit their abilities to advertise, make art or otherwise create their own space. On the other hand, if it's space we're trying to lower on the server, I understand that having ten thousand total posts with a loaded signature is no good. Whatever we have in our signature is multiplied by hundreds or thousands, and if it's big, we're slowing you down. I can see both sides clearly.

What I propose is that each person gets their own "space." The easiest thing to do is to dedicate one topic in Off-Topic, Welcome or Site Discussion to users being able to make their own space and put whatever they want in it. Advertise what they want, quote what they want and anything otherwise they'd stuff in spoilers or stretch out their sig for. In their signature, they can keep to the new limit and post a link to their space. The space topic would be a global announcement so everyone can find it easily.

I think that would be a compromise. Everyone would have a space for their own stuff that would have an unlimited space and would only take one post. The mods would have more server space, and would only have to put up with another global announcement.

Sound fair?

I don't see a problem with what we have now

There evidently seems to be no problem with our current setup. I think "don't fix what isn't broken" is the appropriate phrase here.

I'd like to note that my signature retains a backlog of all its content up to two years ago, just all hidden with [hide] tags. It all still loads, just doesn't appear.

I actually like the idea of having a topic for our own "space."

I kinda wish my signature were more condensed, but I have an OCD which makes me feel I NEED to have the stuff in my sig be in existence, yet I have no other space for them.

The problem, as Suyo tells it, is we are running low on server space. Signature lengths are the most painless way of reducing that. If one person with over a thousand posts pares down their signature length by just a third, then that's a ton of space back.

I think that this idea of "personal topic space" kind of ruins the original purpose of sigs: Advertising, with links sending viewers directly to the stuff they want to go to. Having to go to another topic first may discourage some people, because, I don't know, it takes more time, or requires to open an additional tab. Sigs are direct.

Topics get buried, signatures don't.
