I feel I should make it clear that the SM63 is not dead. All this C&D might mean is that I can't offer downloads to the game on my site anymore. The portal will still be here. And level designer competitions can still go on.

^That was more or less my theory.
But the main problem is becaus we are using copyrighted resources made by them?……what if we could make our own?

Updating the game to remove any connections to Mario could be a community project? If things work out right, we might even be able to fix glitches, update the level designer, or even add new levels in Flash...but that's a bit far-fetched.

If that's so, I'd like to help. :3

No, I mean we make custom tiles, enemies, and mario sprite.
Keep the original stuff. But instead of copyrighted stuff we do what TSR did and we makea revamped pack. Like making a pack for MC but...you know. mario. we just mke everything match and look like nintendo didnt make it. then they cant even issue a c and d gainst it because its not their content.

That's pretty much exactly what I meant by removing connections to Mario. The game stays the same (or, if we're lucky, gets better), the graphics don't.

Seriously people? Seriously? It's not like the world is ending. I'll admit, SM63 is the only reason I even found out this site was a thing. But seriously people, it's not like the world is ending.
LL is not very user friendly, but neither is SM63. Seriously, how are you supposed to call that Level Editor "user friendly" when a good chunk of its features come from glitches; some of which come from editing the code! Seriously, if anything about SM63 is user unfriendly it's all the editing you have to do to the full code to get certain glitches to work. With LL you can copy out individual items and alter a single, isolated item, at any given moment. You don't have to copy the entire code out and search for minutes to find what you need. Considering the size of LL levels, that's more user friendly than SM63. The trigger system is designed for more code savvy people. It's similar to ASM, which is why I was able to learn it so quickly. However, not everybody can learn ASM, or something similar. I do realize some people just don't like certain things. But neither one is particularly user friendly.
If this happens then so be it. Sometimes life just punches you in the face, and that sucks. So what are you going to do about it? Are you going to cry in a corner or are you doing to just deal with it and move on with life? I'm not saying you have to leave to move on, but you can still get around whether SM63 gets shut down or not. Ah well, I think people have replied since I started this post, but still.

We didn't mean the world was ending. We were just saying that getting rid of the Portal (though it will not be happening) would basically mean get rid of hours of work and memories from dozens of people. Like MP3, SM63 is way more than a simple game for me: it's what made me discover the forums, these great forums which basically helped me during dark times when I needed it. These forums that helped me learn English as I lived in the heart of London (believe me, it helped). These forums and this game that made me discover a creative part of myself, an artistic part of myself I never thought was in me the whole time. I made comics, discovered how fun making comics was... And hopefully going to make it my future hobby, if not my full-part job (I wish). Not with drawings as quick as these cards or anything I do here because I am not patient enough here. Super Mario 63 and this site truly has changed my life in a way you basically can't freaking imagine.
Of course, if SM63 were to disappear, none of these things would disappear with it, I understand, but it's just for the symbol this game and these levels represent to me. Hours, like, suddenly gone.
But if the Portal is fine, I'm fine.
As for SM63 not being user-friendly because of glitches, let me disagree here. You can make really epic things without touching the code once. For example, I can tell you that I haven't touched the code during the making of my levels for my Super Mario Countdown series (yet), nor during the making of my levels for the SMA: Mirror Island series (Yup, even the final boss). Not to brag about them, but we can pretty much agree that they are quite a level, right?
StarEDIT: If tiles are to be remade, please try to keep it similar, or at least of similar texture and/or color. I am pretty sure a lot of modern levels' graphics (or at least mine but I can't be alone) rest on that. Just... a point I wanted to make. BTW I can help if needed.

Just to make it clear I never said RIP SM63. And I would only be as upset as described in my previous post is if the level designer was taken down, but after Runouw explained, it seems that's not going to happen. So things probably aren't going to be as bad as we expected after all.
I'm going to respect how differently everybody reacts to this scenario, okay? Some people will be upset, but will move on with life and forget about it and start something new. Some people won't even care. Some people, like me, will find it really truly difficult to get past in the short term, but long term things will be okay. Some may never even get past it.
This is just a response to all the posts assuming that people should react/are reacting the same way. Change hits some people harder than others, I don't think it would be right to say anyone was reacting wrongly here. Nintendo seems to be a company quite like Apple (except for the game industry instead) in the way they handle customers and the way they don't give a thought to how their decisions affect fans of them. Naturally I don't respect those kinds of companies.
But no matter what happens now, we are only affected by this short term, okay? At the end of the day, Nintendo are the ones who are making it worse for themselves. They will lose money and customers because of this. You might not believe it. But before SM63 I had no interest in Mario games, but since then, I have been a fan of them completely and I was very much wanting to get a proper Nintendo Mario game on a DS or Wii or something. There are probably other people out there like me, and by cutting off SM63 from the world, it's basically their loss, not ours.
If it comes to it I was thinking I might record myself on the offline designer playing the SM63 worlds to collect the coins or shine sprites etc and putting them up on YouTube, just so if the game is taken down completely, people can still watch the videos to remember what it was like or something.
