Memory Lane
The final destination for anyone who dies is Memory Lane. This time, it's Mario's turn.

So, the level isn't that hard in and of itself, but to add to the difficulty, there are no checkpoints. It's a red coin level that takes place in 6 mini-levels. There's also an extra element to the challenges: None of the doors are labeled so you have to remember which ones you went through. (Memory, get it?)

Loading times are pretty high for this, but doable. Think of the first level of Destinations.

When you first asked to make sure that this loaded, I didn't get very far through the level, but I enjoyed the part that I saw. It looked really good. I'll do a full review when I end up finishing the level.

The level itself obviously takes another story-heavy route, as do most of yours as of late, and it probably places far more emphasis on this than any other. This makes it different, but not necessarily in a good way, because it isn't the type of story that can be followed easily. The chambers are based off Mario's memories, but at the same time they won't necessarily make sense unless we've actually played the games in question (assuming this is even the case). Without the proper context, the impact is weakened, and it is described through the signs well enough, it still isn't enough for me. Perhaps it is because it simply tries too hard to do it through writing instead of via appearance, like it did with Finis.
At the very least, though, it ended on a strong note, which is appreciated. The setting probably helps more with this, I suppose, as it is mostly the individual mini-excursions that didn't work quite as well.

The loading time was indeed fairly long, even if you warned us about it, but it also isn't as easy as you make it out to be. Perhaps if it was, said loading issue wouldn't come into play quite so often. Additionally, it would have probably been easier to enjoy the difficulty if the loading wasn't so arduous, but then again, I suppose that cannot be helped.
Beyond that, gameplay-wise, no severe issues come to mind, although a bit more emphasis could have been put on the platforming aspect. After all, isn't that what would be most memorable, rather than trekking through empty fields trying to relate to something that we're not aware of (mostly referring to the snowy section here). It did get rather dull in many places.
The way the big bully was handled in the fortress section was intriguing, though; probably one of the better ways to make it a boss-like threat that I've seen.

Graphically, I suppose it does technically make sense to have such jarring shifts in terrain and environments (due to the nature of the level itself), and the hall of memories in particular is well done in particular, but from a gameplay perspective, the numerous issues with cutoff and terrain blending just doesn't look nice. Perhaps it would have worked better if passing a level transition allowed you to pass between thoughts instead of having it done so abruptly. It might have made a difference in the doomsday scenario in particular, as it weakens the effect when it isn't truly one-way.

What bothers me the most, though, is the lack of consistency. There are six areas, yet only four red coins, and it is all too easy to skip 1-2 of them depending on the chosen order. The emphasis is clearly placed on exploring each and every scenerio, so why not simply have a red coin in each area?

Overall, it is certainly better than average, but still not at the top either, so it gets a 4/5. I suppose its style just doesn't do it for me.
