The Molten Volcano (Re-Uploaded)
I'm AgentLuigi3 AKA KirbyGamea on YouTube, and I am here to bring you my very first uploaded Super Mario 63 course ever: The Molten Volcano. This beginner's course is DEFINITELY NOT my best quality work, but I am working on a bigger, better course called the Mountain of Prosperity. Look forward to that! In the meantime, enjoy this course that hosts 3 different shines: One to test your agility, the 60 second shine, one to test your skills with FLUDD, the rocket shine, and one to test your attention to detail, the Metal Star shine. Can you collect them all, or will they elude your grasp?

Sorry, the embedded player is not working just yet, please use the Popup link to open the level in a new window.

First of all, I am preying that this is your first level. Because there is a never ending list of things wrong with this level. The second you get in this level. I mean really, what's with the Shine Sprite?!? Second, too many signs. Third, no enemies. Fourth, terrible tile clipping, it burns my eyes. Also, you don't even need the metal powerup.

Well, I gotta say, this wasn't a very good work at all. The first thing I noticed was: Where are the enemies? I know you wanted to add more challenge to your level, but without enemies, the level is not the same, and it just feels empty. The only thing I noticed that could actually kill me was the lava.

Secondly, the graphics were bad. Very bad. Cutoff everywhere, not smart use of tiles, and floating blocks. If this is your first level, I recommend you to take a look at some other professional levels.

As for the Fun aspect, I must say, I actually had fun with the 60 second switch challenge, but the blocks were placed randomly, and turns out it was pretty confusing. The second challenge was horrible. You just had to use the Rocket Fludd, then enter the door, use the sling star, and end. The only part where I could notice platforming was in the switch challenge, and even there it was pretty cheap.

I rate it 1 star.

Also, asdfmoviecaleb, don't be like this while giving criticism. Instead of face palming every time and remembering him this was a bad level, just try to say what is bad and what is good. After all, he might be just starting in the LDing scene.

First of all, it would help if you actually rated the level. Second of all, the shine sprite under where you start is one of the three shines you can get. In fact, spoilers on completing the level, but that's the shine you need the metal star for! Like I said, it tests your ability to pay attention to detail. I don't see how two or three signs is too many, and I don't see what's so bad about the graphics, besides the background, which isn't really something I can fix. The floating blocks on the side of the volcano are like cliff ledges, it's kinda hard to put elements of 3D into a 2D game. The rocket one is the easiest one to do, it's supposed to be easy. The floating switch blocks are there so you can actually get to the top. I'm not sure what you mean when you say it looks confusing, though. There isn't much I can do for enemies, I can't just make them appear when you hit the switch. I'm not sure what "Tile clipping" is, but I assume you mean that the tiles are just there and they don't necessarily flow with the level, but if so I'm not sure why you're saying that. And it would kinda help if you read my description for my level:

First of all, sorry for not rating it, but this was almost a month ago, so I can't do much for it.

Cutoff. You placed tiles in some areas that doesn't have complete edges, such as lava, and turns out the structure of the level got really ugly. Also, you only seemed to use Volcano themed tiles, and no tile variation, therefore contributing for the bad graphics.

You could have improved them by using some tiles in the bottom of them, and prevent cutoff. As you said, it's hard to put elements of 3D into 2D, so it's a better idea if you just stick with 2D anyway.

Agent Luigi 3 wrote:I'm not sure what you mean when you say it looks confusing, though.

I said so because there wasn't any enemies or coins to tell you the path you were going. But, it seems it could be easily fixed by zooming out, so nevermind. It would still be great if you placed some enemies/coins there, though.

The entire purpose of me going to this topic, play this level and give it a rating is because I'd like to give you criticism, and I hope you use it to make better levels. I know it's your first level, and that's why I'm rating it.

I'm probably not the first to say it, but why would you re-upload this? Its easy to tell you didn't put much time into the design of the level. I would have also advised a transition inside the Volcano and out of it. And with the problems everyone else has, I have more to add.
-I was disappointed by the fact there were multiple shines. I lost motivation to get it after the switch challenge.
-The level was ugly, not a single decoration to be seen, or enemy or coin.
In my opinion, if you want to remake a level, you fix problems from the last time. But as I can see here, there isn't any of that.
I rate 1 star.

Now now. I don't think this level was as bad as you guys make it out to be.
It surely lacks graphical details in the decoration sense, even for a volcanic wasteland.
But that's really no reason for complaining this much about it. This is in fact something which will slowly improve over time.

As for the gameplay. The switch challenge gets a bit tedious here and there, the FLUDD usage may destroy the point of the challenge as it's simply removing the difficulty. Enemies are something which could have added a bit more life to this one yeah.

FrozenFire wrote:Also, you only seemed to use Volcano themed tiles, and no tile variation, therefore contributing for the bad graphics.

You only used Volcano themed tiles for a Volcano level. Frozen. This statement disappoints me.

awesomeguy 99 wrote:-I was disappointed by the fact there were multiple shines. I lost motivation to get it after the switch challenge.

Disappointed by the fact there were multiple shine sprites. See it as additional content rather. You shouldn't be disappointed by extras like this.

It'd end up around 2ish for me. But since you're new to this, I'll go for 3 this round. Read through the reviews, pay attention to the mentioned stuff and try to do better next time.
