Overall this was a nice first level, with an interesting narration, a nice amount of coins and no lag. Just some tips to improve:

• To make the level look better, use more slopes, or the brick tiles from the Desert tileset, and alike. Especially the vertical pillars of sand tiles looked odd. You could also form ruins or shapes with background tiles, and add some cactus trees, twisted trees or rocks.
• The hall with water bottles shouldn't give you a look outside, it should be a close area, with more variated tiling instead of a ring of carpet tiles filled with brown tiles. Give it a separate transition, I'd suggest.
• Almost all signs are slightly floating over the ground, also those which seem to be on-ground within designing mode, but for some reason they move down by two pixels.
• The flipping platform required to proceed after the invincibility star is rather slow. Waiting for it that long isn't welcome. Also a sole row of metal cage tiles squashes you for some odd reason when passing through it, you should connect them.
