Buoy Base Galaxy

Good level Bowser! 8/10. I loved the original, but doing it in 2D doesn't seem right.

I found the lag in the second transition unbearable.

Around 15 fps. The problem is mostly that it's a rather tall transition with many enemies that are the worst on causing lag. You didn't spam them but you just unluckily picked the most evil ones to make lag - bob-ombs, bullies and large goombas. Once they're killed, the lag becomes a bit less.

Gameplay-wise this was a very good one, for a beginner's level, especially climbing up the extra path, though you should stop the invincibility cap at some time instead of letting it run endlessly. Graphics-wise this felt very sparse and simplistic at many places. A long water pool within space without any surroundings simply doesn't look good, and nothing but wall tiles everywhere is boring. At the top there were also some instances of grass top tiles exchanging into the background. Replace the outside grass tiles with green bricks or something.

I give this a solid three stars. Good for a start.

what would you suggest putting into the pool then?

Some background tiles could serve as underwater ruins or other structures, especially as the Space background doesn't blend well with water. You could put another wall in the middle of the pool, like in the second transition, and there could be more support of items, e.g. large flipping platforms or rocks and alike. Generally your tiling was sparse in the sense that some walls should have been a bit thicker and there should be a bit more variety. Also the water (as well as every other item) is shining through the middle of an icey cube block, so you better replace these with solid ice tiles within water.

Good tiling generally characterizes itself by being colorful but not too colorful or messy, by having clear structures (walls are walls, ground is ground, buildings are buildings, background is background) and some more visual appeals like e.g. small holes in a natural ground.
