Re: Course 1: The Koopa Land

Postby Supershroom » September 6th, 2015, 4:29 am

Reasons for giving 1 star:

  • This is a multi-shine level, but almost every single shine has a very short route to be accessed.
  • Backtracking from shine sprites in order to reach other ones in one go is not always possible.
  • Blatant cutoff (tile misuse) at one shine
  • Generally, poor graphics scheme with almost no slopes and very few scenery, décor is all concentrated into one place.
  • The pipe to get the 6th shine (the "lone tree") is partially visible, and the clue of a "lone tree" doesn't really make it a secret anymore. If it shall be a good secret, the clue to it should be more subtle (yet not too subtle or all random of course).
  • The circle green platforms are waaaaay to fast (the higher the radius, the smaller the speed must be), you can't jump off properly from them, making it almost possible to reach the switch shine, and they even have the potential to glitch you into the right border of the level.

You should spend more effort, make better use of graphics (landscapes, colours, well-organized décor), think of a suiting concept, and playtest more to make better levels.

Thank you, FF.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Course 1: The Koopa Land Review

Postby SuperLuigi9624 » September 6th, 2015, 9:47 am

Come on. This is his first level. Everyone's first level is pretty mediocre.

Well, I must say, for a first level, I'm impressed. Yeah, it takes about 2 seconds to beat, yeah, it's not the most visually stunning, yeah, there are a few mistakes, but for the most part, you tried your best to avoid cutoff, and I think that if you keep at it, maybe get inspired by a few other levels, you might be a really good designer a little while later... so, keep your chin up!

I'm not gonna rate, I don't like harshly rating because it's your first level, but just remember to add slopes, don't overdo it on the decorations, learn some cool tricks, make levels a little longer, put a lot of effort into it, get inspired by other levels, aaaaaand you'll be set!

Remember, if you're ever a little stumped on what to do next,

Happy designing!
Here's some stuff about me, condensed into a spoiler!: show
Hi. I do level reviews and sometimes I might even draw something. Sometimes I might make a level. Sometimes I might make a level with Nan. But I prefer to pretend the old levels I made when I was like... 15 don't exist. Sometimes I even cook! Sometimes I even cook lobsters. Sometimes, people like the lobsters. Sometimes, I ride horses! 100% of the time, I get paid for helping people ride horses! That's what a job is.

LUGGY'S SUPER AMAZING FAQ!!!!!1
What are you doing right now?: show
Doing a level collab with Nan. And also, a super-secret-exciting project. You'll know what it is when it happens.
Who are you?: show
Hi. I do level reviews and sometimes I might even draw something. Sometimes I might make a l- *shot*
No, seriously, who are you?: show
Luigi Fan 64. I just realized when I stopped being a pubescent sack of malaria that that username is the most generic thing since that chair you're sitting in right now.
Why are you so socially awkward?: show
Well, I'm mildly autistic. No, seriously. It's usually not a problem, though.
Why are you acting like we care about this FAQ?: show
Well, you're the person who didn't scroll down to the next post. So clearly, you care at least a little.

Thanks for not immediately scrolling off. Even though I guess I didn't do much to alter your life in this sig. Meh.
