Starlight Lament

You'll see...



First place entrant in the 4th 25quared LDC. After a haitus of multiple years, this tiny little level surprised me with how well it turned out, and how well it was received. As usual, my goal was less to win and more to do something new and cool... did it accomplish that? I dunno. Special thanks to Shroom for encouraging me to finally post it on the portal.

    • Chip's Challenge style progression level- ditched because not enough space to fit a proper challenge
    • Sarcastic quip level- ditched because level had no substance
  • Contemplated dropping out

May 9 2015:
  • Didn't drop out after all
  • One more awful idea that didn't work
    • Giant Mario boss (don't even ask)- ditched because moving block programming on that magnitude made me feel suicidal
  • Complete re-evaluation of priorities
  • Finally decided on something that might be possible
  • Level framework, moved this to Vault topic yay

May 10 2015:
  • Watched UBW. Today was a good day.

May 11 2015:
  • Forgot there was a contest happening. Discussed UBW with cool internet people instead.

May 12 2015:
  • Nope, still haven't remembered yet. Try tomorrow.

May 13 2015:
  • Discovered there was only 7 days left
    • Oh crap why didn't I start earlier this level isn't going to woooooork
  • Decide to actually get to work on a fancypants level banner titlecard thing
    • Accidentally made a Cthulhu-monster. This is why I do not art. Promptly gave up before eldritch horrors descended on my house.
  • Finished all the rough tilework, this might actually end up being a story level. Wasn't expecting that.
  • Debated a music change
    • No extended version. Sad day. Unsure if this will be a problem.
  • Updated progress bar, removed titlecard placeholder, decided on a tentative name

May 14 2015:
  • Got Urakaze in Kancolle, she's pretty cute. Boathoes for life.

May 15 2015:
  • Redid the entire level yet again, hopefully a better fit for the alternate music selection
    • Planning phase done, basic tilework finished
  • Actually added the tentative name this time around
  • Added "Yet To Be Done" section at the end of the changelog blurb
    • Mostly so I can procrastinate and forget about this more efficiently than previously thought possible
  • De-updated progress bar
  • Fixed the title gradient

May 16 2015:
  • Tilework done, unless something comes up later on
  • Watched UBW. Whole lotta talking. But hey it explained that stuff Chau was talking about yesterday.
  • Preliminary playtests were good
  • Fixed the title gradient for real this time
  • Tossed in a bunch of plants and stars and junk, put about half of it together
  • Figured out how to diable stuff again
    • Disabled all the things
      • Oh no too many things disabled have fun not beating the level
        • Re-abled a lot of stuff, level should be possible again

May 17 2015:
  • Didn't get Amatsukaze, I'm a little bit sad
  • Changed tiling a little toward the end to fix a misbehaving sling star
  • Ordered a bunch of plants and junk, I forgot how painful this part of level designing was

May 18 2015:
  • Playtested some more
    • Wow, I can't design worth ♥♥♥♥
  • A whole bunch of bugfixes and stuff:
    • Doors now align properly
    • Path to the second star is now actually visible
    • Killed a spider that was hiding under my laptop. Guess I really...

      ...

      ...quashed that bug. YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAH
    • More slingstar tweaks
    • Figured out how to stop platforms instead of relying on brutish and unpredictable hacks
    • Lava now 46% more fatal
    • Shut down rogue AI
    • Assorted platforms no longer harbor homicidal tendencies
    • Removed a block monstrosity that served no other purpose than screwing with the wing cap
      • A shame, I was really goddamn proud of it too. Moved and everything.
    • Second star no longer kills the player
  • Updated "Yet To Be Done" list and progress bar
  • Functional level prototype now complete! Yay.

May 19 2015:
  • Did an art. It's... actually not terrible. Pretty surprised, honestly.
  • Gonna try something new, couple of changes to accommodate short story
    • Reworked first star, third star, and shine
    • Might still scrap this depending on how many signs are required
    • Might still scrap this depending on how tight tomorrow's schedule is

May 20 2015:
  • Finished story, worried it might be a little rushed though
  • Reworked a couple stars again, not entirely sure if I'm happy with them yet
  • Final playtest, looking great
  • Added level code, added title banner, added level information
  • Removed progress indicator since it's kinda redundant now
  • Previewed vault post, looking great as well
  • Updated "Yet To Be Done" section
  • Revised level information
  • Made a necessary platform sparkle
  • Got a sizable head-start on forgetting that 25quared was a thing

Nicely done.
Maybe there's no need to cram a lot in a 25x25 as you have more breathing room in this one than what I did in my level.
