... honestly we could just make the theme pure platformer and call it a day, that sounds like a bit too many restrictions for me ;-;
Expect something cool here soon!

At that point there's less variety than SM63, you just removed everything that makes LL actually fun and interesting. It would feel less like classic Mario or "Vanilla" and more like an extremely bland first-time portal level. If SM63 is chicken and LL is a good steak, then that idea is... tofu. Terrible analogy, but the idea is basically that I think that's a terrible idea. If someone actually hates themselves to the point that they'd willingly elect to restrict themselves that much, then go for it, but I feel like that would ruin the experience for just about anyone else. If you look at the House Rules list, they're usually just basic alterations, anyway, not huge lists of individual technicalities and restrictions.

---

In other news, I might be down for an LL duel with someone, because I've really been itching to play with the LDer lately. If Fluorescence is fine with LL, I could duel with him, otherwise I'll go with whoever wants to duel (or we could do a 3-way). I'm thinking some sort of Mechanized/Industrial theme? (but anything works)

Also, MoD should be removed from the Challengers list in the OP, since she's in a duel now :p

Vanilla LL is something totally different from Pure Platformer, though it's pretty much inspired from the same problem as Pure Platformer's introduction in the 14th LDC: People wanting to use every trick in the book possible and wanting to be super creative and experimental with triggers etc. and the designer itself being rather tedious honestly and then getting tired of level making, procrastinating, being overwhelmed, all that. Being forced to make a simply designed level under this theme can let you have a much easier time on making the level, that's the thought.

But then again, this isn't Pure Platformer by definition since you can still make puzzles or include some story. You still have a somewhat different playing and designing style from SM63 (items, double jump, NPCs etc), and there's also a fair share amount of LL-special things remaining (e.g. triggers where you're allowed to have them).

And honestly I can also drop the "no rescale" thing, but "no colors" happens for the same reason as "no custom gfx" happens for SMBX Vanilla. "No changing enemy HP" happens to prevent tedious bosses like a large dark beast with 200 HP or similar.

Thank you, FF.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Yeah, but having a dark beast at 200 HP could still be incorporated for gameplay reasons (like wanting to have an unkillable enemy chasing you around a level). I mean if you're going for something that's more beginner friendly with regards to the level designer's nuances, I guess? But I would just include the things they can do rather than just restrict a bunch of obscure stuff a beginner at LL designing probably isn't going to mess around with first thing...

also I was recently dabbling in working on some unfinished LL levels, I can't really say it's tedious. If anything it's a lot more intuitive than SM63's level designer, even if triggers take a while to get used to.

I don't really wanna stomp on anyone's ideas here but if both duelists are happy with the restrictions, well... they're the guys who have to operate within them, not anybody else. :p

There's always time to start learning c:

I mean you don't have to, but even if you throw away all the more complicated stuff that comes with LL, you can still do so much more.
