That was incredibly stupid of me. I'll probably finish sometime soon.

edit:

All Aboard the Space Train!

Agent Mario of the Anti-Terrorist VSSPeach Agency was dispatched near a local train station to catch a hidden Koopa Smuggler train before it took off! However, the smugglers set up earlier than expected, and even set a backup bomb to blow up the train should anyone interfere! With little time left, can our hero reach the train in time?

Re: The Universal Dueling Arena

Postby l.m » September 11th, 2015, 2:19 pm

I'm going to announce the results for the 1-hour duel that just happened between MoD and Venexis and that none of you actually noticed, by the way:

And, the winner is:

SPOILER IT'S MOYO: show
MoD!!!

...stupid spoiler tags.

Here are the judgings by the way:

MOYO: show
MoD: Paralyzed Panic

Fun: 6.75/10

That was an interesting level… for a 1-hour (probably more?) duel. While there wasn’t much action – just a weird Mario paralyzed in the air who apparently got radioactive super powers to keep floating that high – I can say it was well done. However, since I was not fond of those weird physics, I always ended up being hit all the time by enemies nearby.

Graphics: 4.25/5

You managed to pull off a freaking good scenery, pal. Good tile combination, good usage of items. Not really any new astounding gimmicky design, but I definitely can’t blame you for not thinking of some new design in just a little bit more than one hour.

Other: 3/5

+0.0: 18:18:13 <FF> lmao I love that sometimes you get the Shine Sprite and stay in midair forever so you can't win
+0.25: No lag or loading time, hahahahaha.
+0.0: WHOA MOD THAT WAS A GREAT MUSIC SELECTION, AS ALWAYS! NO WONDER WHY YOU’RE SO GR- oh wait
-0.25: That Koopa in the beginning of the level who kept hitting me in the head every time I started needs to check his ♥♥♥♥ privilege.

OVERALL: 14/20

BENEXIS: show
Benexis: Ghost Galaxy

Fun: 7.25/10

Quite short but fun. The platforming was so easy I could say it’s the opposite of a level from Peter, but it’s also fun like that. Though I do think you did not use the concept properly. It was pretty straightforward; I knew exactly what to do, and exactly where to go, and no neurons were lost during the process (I’m pretty disappointed by the way). Also there was literally no enemies or anything that could potentially ♥♥♥♥ me up and make me start all over again.

Graphics: 3/5

It feels bland. And I don’t say that because “hurr durr you had to spam trees”, but because it was possible for you to do more there. The only tile decorations that I could manage to notice there were almost invisible. But still, it was bearable.

Other: 3/5

-0.25: Since I’m an MLG pro, I managed to skip the entire second transition only by jumping over the first pipe structure and then triple jumping + diving to the next structure. Also I lied, I’m not an MLG pro.
+0.25: You already know what that means. (No lag or loading time, by the way)

OVERALL: 13.25/20

Ok. I've neglected this thread long enough. I'll try to keep the first post updated from now on, and manage things I guess.

The Challengers section has been reset, as well as the Current Duels section (Harmless, Shroom, what will your deadline be? Or is it over already and I completely missed it? :P ). If you're interested in a challenge, PM me or post here. I'm also interested in having a semi-permanent panel of judges. More than three hopefully, so that we can always have someone present to judge. I'll try to advertise this place more too, we need more peoples.
Some day I'll fix my sig.

I could always judge duels as long as I'm not a part of them or I miss them. Too bad that I live in German timezone (the MoD vs. Ven duel finished at 11pm CET), I could have judged that if I knew about it. Also, only one judging from FF makes the results ...

And it's very nice to see that Harmless is his old self again and has overcome his mini-crisis. You can have as much time as you need until you think you're good to go, as long as you don't neglect it again. ;P

Jumbo wrote:Maybe some other time... Sorry, I'm quite busy with some other stuff. Apologies to dissapoint you.

lol that fits well, no need to apologize

EDIT: Nin will judge my duel with Peter (confirmed via chat, thanks nin)

Thank you, FF.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

Been awhile since I did one of these announcements.

So may as well go all out.

Image

I gotta say, after floundering on my face in a 90-minute duel, aka 150% of the time you had, I have a lot more respect for you two. The winner here is pretty obvious score-wise but the effort put into both works is stunning, so take that to the bank.

Obvious shout-out to judges besides bored ol' Cade on a September day not wanting to face the sun- Harmless and Nin10mode!

One level got a score in the 16s, another in the 11s, so the winner was obvious but I wouldn't say either one was short of impressive for the time taken. The winner, with a score of 16.21, is...

Scores, Lowdown, Post-Mortem: show
Image

The judges gave you a 17.25 (me), a 16.4 (Harmless) and a 15 (Nin10mode). This gives you a score of 16.22, which is the same as DarkBlaze's Frost Glade... uhm wow, kid. I still think it's a grand level with a beautiful flow. I'm not sure how you feel knowing your most critically acclaimed level after a history of overproduction was made in 60 minutes but there's a lesson here.

Unfortunately, Peter, that means that you got 11.5. That's two 13s from Nin10mode and myself and an unfortunate 8.5 from Harmless. Still, the amount of effort was unrivaled for something done in an hour- it's just unfortunate that the expedient time left room for overproduction.

Interesting that two designers with that title would face off with that idea in mind, with one succeeding and the other not so much.

If you wanna know what the ♥♥♥♥ I was thinking, Here you go. By request from Ninny for some weird-ass reason the judges will also post their own ♥♥♥♥.

Re: The Universal Dueling Arena

Postby Supershroom » September 12th, 2015, 8:05 am

Well, first off, I'm very glad of course that I've finally broken that 16 points barrier after various attempts, especially from Harmless. XD But honestly I wish this would have been a bit closer than a 4.71 points margin (and therefore it displaces -BY vs. spookyghost as the highest win in a duel). Just by the fact that I would never be able to create such an accurately looking bloss in one hour. Well, I'll see the reasonings.

You've put up a good fight, Peter, and by the way, you know I've also lost my first duel against Yurimaster. You also have all chances to level it up in your next duel.

This is necessary

Okay here take your things. Screw spoilers though.

Once again, I personally rate levels only in reference to other levels in the contest/event. A really high score does not mean I consider it the best of all time, just the best for that particular contest/event. Nor does it mean a particularly low score deserves to rot in hell with its designer, though that's not really a problem here anyway.

Hectic Platforming
==========

Gameplay:

Oh boy, a timed obstacle course! Let's play a drinking game! Every time I die I have to take a shot. Yes, I'm underage.

As a platformer, this was really fun. There wasn't anything groundbreaking, but that's not expected from a one hour level. I don't know if today was a good day for me, but I cleared this pretty easily. I stumbled a few times at that falling log, and I missed that final moving platform twice, but because of the nature of these levels, I didn't really mind.
Or maybe this level is impossible and I'm just godly at the game, or I'm a massive masochist. I dunno. Let's go with both.

I did have to restart once, so I guess that's a shot...

Wait. I didn't actually die, I restarted because I figured I ran out of time... SAFE!

9/10

---

Graphics:

So scrolling through the level, the first thing that comes to my mind is "What the heck is with your tiling." Then I remember that the title is Hectic Platforming. Then it all made sense, as if a golden fedora gently floated atop my head and gifted me with all the euphoria that the world contains...

Eh. I guess I could talk more in depth. And less like a neckbeard. It's actually pretty bare and standard. Yeah, you used like six different main palettes, but it fits the title, and they don't really interfere with each other because they are (for the most part) seperate chunks of tiles. That said, the texture that you did make (the pillar at the end) could have been nicer. The bottom two chunks of cabin tiles are particularly jarring. So while I kinda like the fact that you squished multiple tilesets into a small space, kinda following that one-hour feeling of this duel, it's so bare that I can't praise it much.

One last thing. The fact that that first wooden background pillar supporting the lava section is one tile wider than the rest is hella not-nice. People usually won't praise consistency because it's supposed to be a given, and I think it would be a stretch to say that that was intentional emphasis or what have you.

Big Bob-Omb's Attack(red, bold-faced because it must be made clear that it is the Bob-Omb King attacking, not Mario even though he is flying in at the direction of his fleet and there is no clear target for the fleet because this is a standalone boss and not the end of a level series)
==========

Gameplay:

...That was a heart-racer. Since I'm a self-proclaimed masochist, I can't say that I didn't have fun, because I did. Even if I died more times than I could count on my hand. I don't have any fingers, by the way.

[bossrant]
That said, the thing about boss battles is that they ideally need to be clear and refined. There's typically some clarity as to what the objective is. You had a good start with your description of 'goomba generals', but to me, they were nothing more than ordinary goombas that happened to be ontop of black piranha plants. After the fact, I realized that you intended to make them 'boss'-like by stacking them (sidenote, you can skip all of these by slow-spinning, or pressing left and right in succession rapidly) but the thing is that the player can choose to skip them not knowing that there's actually a red coin there. There was no way to tell if it was a preboss section or a boss "pattern".

This is why block switches work well with blosses. If the player sees that they cannot pass a section, they know that there is something to look for; in boss battles, the weak point. Some arrows would have sufficed. I think making a circle around them would have made a neat reticle pattern.
[/bossrant]

7.5/10

---

Graphics:

I can't say anything about the block enemies, because generally I don't like how they end up looking regardless of the designer. Heh. The Bob-Omb King was a good choice for a one-hour bloss though. Props on the smart decision and successful execution.

The tiling however...
Your normal airships are fine. The plant pods however strike me as unusual. They are still airships, so I would have liked to see a structure rather than a mix. Something like dark-bottom, light-top or the reverse. In King Bob-Omb's room, you enlarged the windows, but not the striped pattern with it. That would have made it consistent, and also with a bit of dimension tweaking (and more background tiles), have given a better illusion that you are indeed still in the airship.

+2 At the end of the day, it's a bloss though and I like fighting blosses.
