honestly i'm not fond of vertical, due to the fact vertical level transitions do not exist and really i feel like in general sm63 isn't suited for it
of course if i feel like making a level and that theme comes i can work with it, but i'd really rather not

I think if we're going with the Vertical theme you should be allowed to make the level bigger horizontally and be able to use transitions and simulate a vertical level.

But yeah I'm not veeeery fond of it either.

I thought that was implied, honestly. As long as it was clear that up was the direction of travel, as opposed to left or right.

Down is also vertical. HMMMMMMMMM.

When I originally came up with the vertical theme in the suggestions thread and when I nominated it, my thoughts were more on Venexis' lines of thinking. Instead of having an actual limit for the x value,I'd rather for the general direction of travel to be vertical.

To determine the difference between a "vertical" level or a "horizontal" level,I think an X:Y ratio should be used.

If it was up to me, the ratio would be 1:4. So as an example, a 25 x 100 level would work, or a 200 x 800. 200 x 600 would not work. If there is empty space due to level transitions, that is okay. If there is empty space, and no content to the right or left, the level may not fit the theme. I would deem any level that seems as if the character is mostly travelling upwards or downwards to fit the theme.

Of course, there might need to be a few changes to this if necessary.

The quintessential vertical level I think of is Volkove's Parallel Spires. He has several segments of vertical travel, the level goes entirely up, and he just builds it in parts across level transitions. It's a wide level with like ten rooms that go up the same height to simulate it being taller than it is wide. If you want a good reference point, look that level up.

actually I mostly voted vertical because I was hit with an amazing idea last night and I REALLY wanna do it, vertical would be downright perfect for it too
