Yesterday I was thinking for ideas on level competitions, and this came to mind. A way to expand upon the concept of a Level Designer Contest. This new, reformed competition could be called...
Level Designer Festival!Inspired by film festivals (and the Saxxy Awards

), this kind of competition would feature multiple prizes, with multiple categories for people to aim for. The way it will work is the following:
First, players upload their levels to a Vault, as usual. However, the Judges will not just be giving your levels a score this time. Each Judge can nominate a single level for each category. So far, I have these in mind:
Best Action Level: For the best action packed levels, with fun platforming and interesting challenges.
Best Exploration Level: For levels with very interesting worlds to find your way through.
Best Story Level: For levels that tell you a story.
Best Newcomer Level: For noteworthy levels made by a newcomer to the Level Designing scene.
Best Graphical Level: For levels that look veeeeeery good.
I'm sure there's more categories I could put here, but for now I can only think of these. I'd actually like to hear your opinions on what categories could be used.
Also I'm sure that a Judge could also choose to not nominate a level for a category, if they think no level is good enough to fit the criteria.
All nominated levels for a category then compete to earn the award. If one of the nominees has been nominated by more judges than the rest (a level with 3 nominations, for example), then that level wins immediately. However, if there's no clear winner, then the Judges gather to vote on which one of the levels should be the winner. That winner will then get the category's award, and the other nominees will get a nice prize for being nominated. I mean, they deserve something, right?
And after all of these, there's the Best Overall Level. This is pretty much the standard LDC fare, with the level with the highest average score from judgings winning. This is of course the main event, and would have multiple placing awards.
And everyone who competed could also get a Participation Award. After all, just joining an LDC and working on a level is quite a task, so even if you don't win anything you deserve some credit.
This is pretty much the idea. With multiple categories and awards to aim for besides the main scoring thing, players will be more motivated to create the level they want to make and to want to join the competition. At least, that's what I think.
I'd like to hear your opinions on this idea.
Oh yeah, something to add, I think these competitions should not have a theme. Freestyle. That way players aren't as limited. And if a player is uncertain on what to make, they could also aim for one of the award categories.
