- It all had begun on a rainy Tuesday night. All of Mushroom Kingdom was in uproar after the events of this past week. And, at the core of all disorder, the Toad Brigade was hard at work at its Observatory. When did they ever build one?
[Toadette] Is this really true, honey?
[Toad] Couldn't be any more certain of that.
[Toadette] And all this right after after your promotion. How unfortunate...
[Toad] Chuck, this is just a torch. See? I need it to work during double shifts. Why does everyone take me for a captain?
[Toad #2] Quit chattering around and come see this, Eddie.
[Eddie] What now, Nero?
[Nero] Bowser's Castle stands again!
[Eddie] You've got to be kidding.
[Nero] Just a few days ago, there was a gathering of minions in the castle's remainders, setting up scaffolds and moving boulders around. And today, they were done, just like that. It's like someone activated Aegis. The full report came from Rosalina herself.
[Eddie] Are you serious? Wasn't she only supposed to return ninety-nine years from now?
[Nero] That's exactly why she came back only to warn us. It's happening everywhere.
[Peach] Ed, Edd and Eddie, is that right?
The room went silent. A couple of busy Toads stumbled into each other.
[Peach] I'm sorry for barging in, but I couldn't wait for an update.
[Eddie]That's exactly the issue we're looking into right now. We aren't entirely sure of its reasoning yet, but our investigation is almost done.
[Peach] Enlighten me, Monkey D. Eddie.
Eddie didn't answer.
[Peach] ... Chuck?
[Chuck] *cough* Princess, we suspect we are dealing with an AOM.
[Peach] AOM?
[Eddie] It's an acronym, which stands for Anomalous Overworld Metamorphosis. Every now and then, the release of sequels to the franchise provokes subtle changes to the Overworld's scape. Then, us Toads help with developing technologies in order to effectively adapt our infrastructure to the revised world map.
[Peach] If that's so, how are the citizens supposed to be so alarmed with the events?
[Nero] Here's the thing, Princess. They aren't. That's all because this change is an anomalous, This is a spontaneous change triggered from within the Overworld.
[Peach] Why? -- How? -- What?
[Nero] Runouw's development staff is busy with another franchise, and no new titles have been announced or released recently by Nintendo. What's more, we've been hit with unprecedented strength. Word has spread that even space was rearranged. There were two solar eclipses just last week!
[Peach] Oh, my.
[Eddie] And all thanks to that, we've spent as much time as we could redrawing the World Map. By the stars, Nora and Ryan haven't even had a coffee break for three days and nights! And what about everyone that got stuck in the field?
[Peach] I wonder if mobilizing the other segments of the Star Force would be of help to you.
[Chuck] Princess, truth be told, we have little confidence in Plungma's bosses' initiative regarding a subject of such urgency, and we can't rely any more on our citizens' support, despite their obvious goodwill. They are already too busy with carrying on by themselves.
[Peach] What about Mario and Luigi?
[Nero] Both of them are already on the field.
[Peach] Then how come I didn't hear about it?
Another pause.
[Peach] ... They were out there all along, right?
All Toads nod. The Princess reaches to the glass dome in a stroll, and gazes at the green landscape with concern. The Prefecture Hall's ministries were sure to deliver countless questions on the following morning, and announcing the flagship platforming duo's disappearance in the field was definitely not a good way to greet them.
- The player emerges from an ice-cold pool.
[Mario] At last, Luigi. I was really worried!
[Luigi] Mario, may I ask what's with this ice-cold water?
[Mario] There was no other way to wake you up. We had to take a considerable detour.
[Luigi] Oh, dear. How far?
[Mario] We're somewhere in Koopa Forest.
[Luigi] That's almost a thousand miles from where we're supposed to be!
[Mario] At my pace, I'd run out of rations long before we got there. I never expected... whatever has happened to happen.
[Luigi] You don't know, do you?
[Mario] Not at all. It's blank. All I know is I woke up long before you did.
[Luigi] And how did we get here?
[Mario] We were brought by some bypassing critters.
[Luigi] Hold on, let me sort this out. We were sprinting on our way to Frontian, right?
[Mario] Indeed we were.
[Luigi] Which happens to be in the middle of the desert and beside a lava ocean.
[Mario] That's true.
[Luigi] And you expect me to believe we caught a ride in the middle of the desert.
[Mario] I don't need to. There they are. Ask them whatever you like.
[Penguin] Hello there, dude!
*Long silence.*
[Luigi] Penguins in the desert. Right.
[Penguin] We're not penguins, dude!
[Luigi] Wait, what?
[Mario] They call themselves Prinnies. Don't ask.
[Luigi] And they speak.
[Mario] Yeah, they speak.
[Luigi] Are you really sure I'm awake?
[Mario] Let me help you with that.
*The player is thrown in the water again.*
[Luigi] Ah... how I regret saying that.
[Mario] All jokes aside, we must be on our way. Toad Town is likely in shock, and whatever the incident was, they surely know more of it.
[Prinny] What of your promise, dude?
[Luigi] Please tell me they didn't set up a Halloween event. I already feel like running away from them!
[Mario] We've got to go deeper in the Jungle first ... It was a small exchange for the trip. The Prinnies claim something rather unorthodox has transpired deeper in the jungle. We ought to check it out for them, and we'll also carry the word back home.
[Luigi] Sounds like a good exchange ... given where we've ended up.
[Mario] You have no idea.
[Luigi] And I guess I'd rather not know.
[Prinny] Good luck, dudes!
- At a surprisingly rapid pace, the Mario Bros. made their way to the clearing in the forest that the Prinnies had rambled on about. A massive, sinister dark cloud soared up to absurd heights, as a major blasphemy to the clearest of skies to which whatever level designer (hasn't) poured unfaltering effort into. They hoped whoever had caused it to be barbecueing a dinosaur on that pyre: a decent meal for a change would be welcomed well. What's more, Koopas and Kongs alike wouldn't be really happy to notice that a few hectares' worth of fruit were suddenly amiss, much less when it wasn't even the plumbers' fault.
[Mario] Brother, do you hear it?
[Luigi] There's nothing to listen to.
[Mario] Exactly. A jungle like this is supposed to be thriving with life. The cloud must have driven them away.
[Luigi] Brr. Are you really sure that's where you want to go?
[Mario] A deal is a deal.
As they sprinted toward the bonfire, they would stumble into fallen trees and broken branches very frequently. Even with the smoke still being far away, it was scorching hot and dry as they drew close. Several trees, they've come to learn, had fire cast upon them. The plumbers eventually agreed with this was more likely being an impact zone rather than their desired titanic bonfire.
[Both] Mama mia!
And so it was. Deep within Koopa Forest, there was a surprisingly small clearing, given the fallen object's size. All trees were bent outward, steaming, scorching and/or burnt down, and in the midst of it all, an impossible building stood, an unnatural display of order, given the fact one might have had grilled Cheep Cheeps on it.
[Luigi] Awawawawawa! It's a mansion!
[Mario] Looks like someone did build them before they were cool.
[Luigi] Can I keep it?
[Mario] For all I know, Bowser could have been in there.
[Luigi] Well, we're done here. That's scary!
[Mario] Why would you ever want it, then?
[Luigi] Look, our quest is done. I bet everyone back home is worried about us!
[Mario] Not yet... this place is rather reminiscing... I guess it's worth us having a look.
[Luigi] I'd rather not. It's dark in there!
[Mario] Oh, come on!
[Luigi] No! There will be ghosts! And fire! And ghosts on fire!
[Mario] Nothing we've never seen before. See you later!
Mario broke through the front door.
[Luigi] Mario, wait!
[Mario] It's cold in here!
And Luigi ran for dear life to his brother.
