[FF] Final Fantasy 6: The Novel

Postby Zunar » January 8th, 2016, 9:03 pm

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Because this is a story and I have some creative freedom, I won't be sticking to one translation of the game's script. I may hop back and forth between them, or merge them in some way I feel is more appropriate. Apologies if this bothers anyone, but I wanted to make note of it here. Also making a note there will be extra dialogue and scenes I write myself to make the story flow better, so don't expect this story to be exactly FF6 as you know it.

As always, feedback is much appreciated.

Here's some feedback:

So far, I appreciate the fact that you ignored Dadaluma and Tunnel Armor. They were there for gameplay purposes only and I'm glad to see them removed here.

However, it's a shame that you didn't use the opportunity in the Magitek Research Facility to switch the party a bit, introducing Gau's abilities. The bosses there have interesting points about them that can be taken advantage of to demonstrate the "status magic" from Siren's magicite (Number 024 is actually vulnerable to Sleep!).

Also, it's quite a shame that you completely skipped the Phantom Train. A good opportunity missed to shed greater light to Cyan's loss (and demonstrating Cyan's Bushido techniques so he doesn't look like Generic Samurai #343) instead of just reading it through Cyan's small chat.

I've noticed that there are some inconsistencies so far. For example, the key dropped from the Cadet in South Figaro was only mentioned when Locke's about to use it on the old clock (You should mention it when the Cadet gets owned). Another example is when the party encounters Vargas. You skipped the fight with Vargas' bears, yet Terra still mistook Sabin as one of Vargas' bears.

There's also a slight problem with the fight against Kefka in Narshe. He doesn't actually use Fire magics. Instead, he's way more deadly with Blizzard magics, including Blizzara (Pretty much instant death at that point). Maybe you can be slightly more faithful to the source content when it's about bosses, as they're (mostly) quite memorable. Of course, you did say that you have creative freedom, so I can't really force you, but still...consider this a bit?

By the way, a typo:

Chapter 10 wrote:Celes passes out the magicite; Kirin to Locke, Cait Sith to Edgar, Siren to Sabin, and keeps Kirin for herself.

Thanks for the feedback, I've actually gone back through the story and done some reworking, mostly to make it flow better as a story rather than trying to mimic the game as much as possible.

About Gau, I am admittedly neglecting him a bit. I'm a bit biased because personally I never use him since he's more of a gimmicky luck-based character, but I'll figure out somewhere to throw him in. I could put him into the Magitek Facility now since that's a part I'm actually reworking right now, but the reason I originally didn't put him in was because the whole mission of rescuing the espers is supposed to be like a super covert op and Gau does not strike me as the kind of person who could stay quiet. :P

I too hated the idea of leaving out the Phantom Train because of a certain meme, but if you really think about it the Phantom Train really has no story relevance outside of the bit of Cyan's backstory, so I felt it really wasn't worth leaving in. I definitely will demonstrate Cyan's Bushido techniques sometime though, don't worry about that.

The two said inconsistencies have been fixed.

I've been playing through both the SNES version and GBA version and I'm pretty sure I remember him using Fire at least once. You are right about him using Blizzard a lot though, but I really liked the theme of Celes freezing the fireballs with her ice magic since that's what she comes stock with. Considering I also had him use ice to freeze Cyan in his tracks (literally), I didn't want to overuse one particular type of magic. Notice I had him use other spells he uses like poison (on Locke, that's why he was choking) and confuse (on Sabin).

Said typo is moot now because I've completely cut out that section of the story now. I have a plan for espers later.
