Chapter 15: Questions

”Sir.”

“Hah. The irony of the day when one so respected must call another ‘sir.’”

“Well… He would like me to treat his subordinates with a certain amount of respect.”

“Subordinate?”

“That is what he told me you were.”

“Well you are sadly mistaken. You are the subordinate. I am his partner.”

“His… Partner? Well, your…. Partnership. He was wondering when you would press on with the plan.”

“That is up to Runouw. Although I have an idea about what his models are, I would like to see these things up close and personal.”

“And you’re expecting Runouw will allow you to obtain such valuable information?”

“He’ll have to. Won’t he? He has agreed to this, and he is in no place to bargain. I’ll make sure that everything goes smoothly.”

“Excellent. I would rather think you would respond that way.”

Volcove’s eyes flashed with surprise not only from the sight of Runouw, standing calmly in front of the doorway, but Krazy as well, who had pulled out a pistol almost instinctively. She hopped out of the chair and spun around, both hands on the gun, and pointed it directly at Runouw before she even knew who it was.

Runouw seemed completely unfazed by the gun, walking calmly closer to Krazy.

“So did you see anything interesting?” He said casually, although his eyes showed a hint of sadness in them.

Krazy looked for a second at him and then lowered the gun, eyeing him suspiciously. “Interesting? You tell me.”

At those words Runouw actually smiled. It was a small smile, one that never reached his eyes. He stared unfazed at Krazy. “You know… When one makes a fence, it’s common courtesy to not hop over it.”

“Well… I’ve never been too good with my manners.” Krazy said grimly, not taking an eye off Runouw. “What was that thing in the video?”

“An experiment.” Runouw said shortly. Seeing Krazy’s dark look, he rose his hand as if to stop Krazy from speaking. “They are prototype designs for an altered version of us humans.”

“What? Does this have anything to do with the VAGs?” Volcove said in shock. Runouw looked at him, giving a few moments hesitation before nodding.

“In a way, yes.” Runouw said as he walked towards the two. Krazy reacted instantly, raising her gun back up and aiming it at his heart. “Would you really shoot me?” Krazy looked Runouw into the eyes for a moment, then dropped her gaze and turned away, the gun placed back in a concealed pocket in her jacket.

“Not until you give us some answers.” She said defeating.

Volcove, standing in the back trying to remain inconspicuous, now was wondering about Runouw. With the control over the entire forums, he could easily have law enforcement take the two trespassers away. Yet he decides to confront the two, completely unarmed, as if he didn’t care what happened. Maybe he was just confident, but even then, there’s no reason why he should be talking about the experiment at all.

“What are they doing?” Krazy said with an intent look on her face. Runouw matched her gaze with an unfazed look of his own. They didn’t need to know who ‘they’ were.

“They are playing the game.” He said calmly, expecting Krazy’s anger to rise from the vague statement.

She yelled back with ferocity, “you know what I mean. The fact that you have been keeping this… This prototype information here with the 16 users is suspicious at the least. I’ve never seen anything like it before, but even at first glance you can tell exactly what it’s for.”

Runouw shook his head, although his eyes did not meet Krazy’s. “As I said, it is an experiment.”

“Of war!” She added to Runouw’s statement. Runouw didn’t say anything, not denying or agreeing with what she said. His face seemed impassive, but Volcove saw the hint of worry in his eyes. “Regenerating nanotechnological skin, bones made with some sort of metal, I don’t know how the hell you did it, but it was made to resist damage.”

“As I said, it was just an experiment.”

“And what is it doing here? What game needs to test bullets and flames on a body?”

Runouw shook his head. “If I told you, I’m sure none of us would be alive by tomorrow.” Volcove and Krazy looked at each other in alarm. Was it just a bluff, or was he being serious? They turned back to Runouw, who was now in deep thought himself. “They are becoming weapons.”

Their faces which had held shock and suspicion were now turned into a mask of disbelief. “Who?” Volcove said quietly, but he already knew the answer.

Runouw looked darkly at them and then spoke with a cold glance. “Who do you think?” At that moment, a dozen figures charged through the doors behind Runouw. All twelve were armed warriors, their heads covered in masks.

“Drop your weapon. Now!” One of the armed figures commanded, gesturing at Krazy with his battle rifle. She cursed and lowered the weapon onto the ground slowly. “Hands in the air!” They both followed the commands, but Volcove stepped forward.

“Yoshikid?” He said incredulously. Volcove had recognized the voice instantly, and the silence that followed confirmed it. The man who had pointed the gun at both of them was Yoshikid.

“Team Deathmatch.” Nin10mode read the words that were written on his OGE. “Another one?”

“Well, the first one wasn’t really a team’” Blablob laid on a patch of grass under a large palm tree. One of the only dry places, as the entire place was covered in sand. “More like… A bunch of separate duels.”

“Alright, alright. Well now that we all know each other, how are we going to do this?” Fouinone dropped out of the palm tree that Blablob had been lying under. “We’re surrounded be a huge expanse of sand. Don’t know if it ends at all, to tell you the truth.”

“I would hope that having a leader would mean more information on the game.” Azn said with a smile. A loud and angry yell from Nin10mode got all their attention.

His eyes were wide and his face was red and angry. “DAMN IT!” He yelled out and turned around to see the rest of his team staring oddly at him. Now feeling slightly awkward, he looked at all of them, and then down at the sand. “I… I lost The Game.”

The light of understanding came into their eyes about what Nin10mode had had his angry outburst on. Then another came of the words he had just said. They all groaned and Zunar punched Nin10mode in the shoulder. “Didn’t have to tell us did you?”

“Well what was I supposed to say?” Nin10mode rubbed the spot where Zunar punched his shoulder. More from instinct then pain.

“Nothing. It would be better that we think you’re schizophrenic then to make us lose the game.” Blablob said while shaking his head.

“Okay guys, focus.” Four pulled out a small piece of parchment from one of the many hidden pockets on his uniform. “After the briefing, I was supplied with a map and an element blocker.” He pulled out another item, this one small and egg shaped, shining black with a button on one side.

“So what does that doohickey do exactly?” Zunar looked at it with interest. Impulsively, he pressed the button, and they all saw the effect. A large blue bubble popped out of the orb and surrounded the Nightcrashers, suspending the orb in midair.

“It’s a shield.” Four briefly said while watching as they all touched the shield in curiosity, “it is only used for what it’s made for. The weather. Bullets, humans, and so on can still penetrate. The things that can not are things like rain, snow, and sand.” He put an emphasis on sand, making sure they all understood what he meant.

“Gonna be some rough weather?” Blablob said, pressing the button on the suspended orb again and shrinking the shield down. Four nodded with a grin, the others looked more depressed at the news though.

“So anyways, the map here shows the desert as a whole.” He laid the map flat on the sand and they all gathered around it. It was an unimpressive map; the only markings on it were the occasional oasis and noticeable rock formations. The desert was very empty. The oasis were very evenly spread out, Nin10mode noticed, as Four pointed to one that was in the very southwest corner. “Here’s us. Now, seeing as we don’t need water, there is no real need for the oasis except for one thing.” He looked up at all of them, but only for a few seconds before continuing. “Landmarks… If we don’t have them, we’ll be completely lost. So… Where shall we head?” He looked at them all. They all stared blankly back at him. The words were still processing through their heads.

“Well the best place to go is somewhere we can hide easily.” Blablob looked at the desert. There were rock formations everywhere, but nearly all of them were isolated, making sure that if there was fire, it would be obvious where the source was coming from.

Except… “The sand dunes.” He pointed to one near the very center of the map. “There’s a large amount of them here, and some sort of rock formation in the center. We could try to use the dunes as hiding spots and the rocks as bait.”

“Yes, but it’s the center, wouldn’t it be a bit obvious if we hid there?”

“Yes, but don’t worry. No doubt, this seems like the only decent battleground in the fields. There might be others, but if there aren’t, well… We can wait can’t we?”

They all nodded their agreements except for Nin10mode, who fidgeted a little.

“Something wrong?” Zunar asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Nah. I was just wondering how they chose the teams.”

“Well, obviously it wasn’t by patience.” Four smiled at Nin10mode, who gave him a reprimanding look.

“It’s freaking hot.” The words seemed loud in the quiet desert. Brando looked at the back of the others. Suyo walked quietly without saying a word as the others stumbled along. “Can’t that element blocker protect us from the sun?”

“No.” Suyo said shortly and continued his walk on ahead. “If they have enough reason to give us this thing, then it’s probably because there are harsh things in this desert. More harsh then a little sunlight.” He turned to look at Brando with the last words.

Brando shrugged with a smile. “Can’t hurt to ask.” He said wistfully.

Superyoshi didn’t respond, his mind deep in thought. Even though they had won their fortress defense game, there was something still nagging at the back of Suyo’s head. The figure that had rose from the ground in the midst of the army.

The 24 hours had nearly been finished when a last wave of orcs charged towards the castle. Almost with ease, Suyo and the others cut through the army, fending them off with quick sword strikes and bullets.

That’s when Suyo saw a gap within the orc lines. A hooded figure rose from the ground seemingly out of nowhere. A chill went up Suyo’s back, he charged forwards with his blades, slashing through the orcs that blocked the path between him and the figure. As the area cleared, the figure pulled out a sword of its own, similar to the dark green hued ones issued to the Energy Knights.

“Who the hell are you?” Suyo looked at the cloak figure, its face shrouded in darkness. The only reply he got was a lunge towards his heart, which he quickly deflected before the blade came to close. It followed with another quick slash towards the head, which Suyo instantly flicked away with his right sword, using his left sword to counter with his own slice.

The figure hopped backwards and evaded the slice; bring its own sword above its head and dropping it down in a deadly vertical cut. Suyo watched in puzzlement, for at the distance the figure was at now, the sword would not reach him even if the figure lunged at last moment.

Then, suddenly, before the sword finally dropped, it became enveloped in a brilliant light of blue. Suyo knew vaguely what would happen; he brought up both swords to form an X in front of him. The brilliant blue light which the figure was holding dropped down onto Suyo’s cross sword parry, and stopped dead, but the weapon that was now latched onto the cross was not a sword, but a great battleaxe.

Suyo gasped in surprise but couldn’t waste any time, stepping forward and pushing the axe off of his swords, releasing the blades from the locked position they were in. The figure was ready for this, drawing its axe back with both hands and spinning around, bringing the axe back towards Suyo’s left side. Suyo quickly parried again, but the impact of the axe was devastating. The momentum of the spin and the fact that Suyo was caught off-guard was felt throughout Suyo’s entire left arm. With no attempt to counter, Suyo danced backwards a few steps, brandishing his right sword behind him to scare away orcs. This was useless, since when he turned back he realized that the enormous orc army had passed him and the figure, they were now fighting alone, with an entire army attacking the fortress behind Suyo.

Suyo quickly shrugged his left arm, easing the numbness that was still left from the powerful axe strike. The cloaked figure stood there, its axe ready at hand. “What do you want?” Suyo growled angrily at the figure.

The figure looked at Suyo for a moment, or at least, Suyo thought the figure was looking at him. The axe disappeared from its hands as the cloaked warrior stood upright. Suyo, still on his guard, took a moment to inspect his adversary. The figure was actually surprisingly small, perhaps a head shorter than himself. The cloak masked any physical characteristics except the also slim hands. Then words came from the dark shroud inside the cloak.

“I want fear.”

A dawn of understanding came into Suyo’s eyes. He knew who the figure was. It wasn’t the words that helped, but the voice was easily recognizable. A shout behind him made him turn though, as he saw the four Energy Knights huddled up, cutting the army down quickly. But even at the distance he could tell that they were struggling. He turned his head back towards the figure, but all that he saw was empty space. The spot where the cloaked figure had been standing was now vacant, as well as everywhere else. Suyo looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out what just happened.

With a gesture of resignation, he turned around to help his new teammates fight the army of impending orcs.

“Hey man, I think that’s it.” Suyo was snapped back into reality as Brando pointed at a small oasis to the left of us. Checking the map, he confirmed that they were where they should be.

“Alright, we’ll rest there for a bit. I know how much you all hate having to do something.” They all cheered and settled down under the palm trees’ shade. Even after the rest were relaxing and conversing, Suyo sat in contemplation, thinking about the hooded figure.

What did “I want fear,” mean? Why was she in the Games anyways?

LMFAO…I know chau's back when I see a member who's too lazy to post his own story. Anyhow, this may be a bit of a bump, but I think that this a great chapter. The situation with Krazy and Volcove is very gripping as is the appearance of Suyo's adversary. Very well done…could use a little grammatical editing but overall a very solid chapter. So where's the next one?
