Chapter 2: The Truth
I stared back at him, in shock.
How could this be? Billyboy had…had…gone to prison. This was impossible!
“Didn’t you hear me? Get your behind up!” He screamed at me. I kicked with all my force in his—well, let’s just say I kicked him where you DEFINITELY don’t like to be kicked if you are a guy. But it was basically useless; I had no energy. Lack of food had a big impact on me.
So, I knocked the guy down, but he just got back up, like I only made him madder. “Ha! There ain’t no stopping you, is there, kid?”
Then he pulled out a gun and pointed it straight at me. “But you might wanna think about next time you throw a book at my face.” He was referring to the day that changed my life forever.
“So, what? You gonna kill a small 14 year old kid?”
He looked at me in disbelief. “Boy, you just don’t listen. Why would I kill ya if I told ya to get up? If I kill you, I kill you. You think I care if you’re standing or sitting when I kill you? Shoot. I would’ve killed you in your sleep if that was what I was here for.
“But it isn’t. So listen boy, and you listen good.” At this point, I allowed him to let me stand up, so I could stand face to face with him.
“I need you to take me to your mother. Okay? That’s all I’m asking. You do that; I’m out of your life forever. Deal?”
Man.
Wow. OH MAN!
DANG!
Wow. Okay? Just wow.
“My mom…died. She died the day you kidnapped me.”
A heartbreaking look poured across his face. “Wha…she….she’s dead?”
“She’s dead.” I assured him.
He just leaned up against the back of the wall and grabbed a pack of cigarettes from his back pocket. He lit it with a lighter, puffed out some smoke, and told me his story.
“That woman was the finest woman I’d ever lay my eyes on. We had a relationship, once.” Once he said that, I thought silently: the woman that Joey had been with, the woman in the tape; it was my mom.
“We were something bigger and better. We had a love so strong. But I blew it, and next thing you know, your dad comes into the picture. He stole your mom’s heart, and I was simply known after that as the neighbor on meds.
“But once I heard your dad gone crazy, then after some while, I decided it was time for me to face my mistake; face your mother and pour my heart out to her. I realize you may think that is wrong of me, to try to make her love me again when she’s already married. Heh. Love is a funny thing.
“Love. It isn’t something you want, though. Not after you realize what it can do to you. You want to spend your life with someone forever; you would do anything for them. You couldn’t imagine anything happening to them.
“So, to hear you tell me she’s dead. Well, not only does it break my heart, but it leaves me of a deed undone, and I will never get that chance to do it. Not…unless I’m with her.”
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
“I…I never knew life could be so harsh to some people.” Even though I couldn’t know how he felt, I think I could understand what he was going through.
“When did you decide to see her again?” I asked.
“Hm….about a month after I kidnapped you.”
“Why DID you kidnap me, anyway?”
“Huh…I guess I was just…scared. Or…jealous. Jealous because I never got the chance to have kids. But I was literally off my meds, and the things it can do to you; you wouldn’t imagine. By the way, I’m sorry for that.”
“It’s cool” I said, even though my heart will never be “cool” with it.
“Well…what did you do to my mom to make her leave you?”
Joey was on his second cigarette. “I don’t know, man. We were low on money, and I had to do what I had to do to get us some. But your mother just didn’t see good in that.”
“There is one last question that’s really bothering me. How are you even here? And, come to think of it, how’d you know where to find me?”
“Well, I broke out of prison. So the cops are after me. And my friend Chuck here told me where you were.”
Chuck?
CHUCK?!
The homeless guy?
“How are you friends with Chuck?”
“He’s just…a guy I’ve known for awhile. Like me, he wasn’t successful, and ended up becoming homeless.”
“Well…Chuck is a nice guy and all that. But…was it just a lucky guess that I chose his hideout to stay?”
“Man, kid. I don’t have all the answers. Things happen for a reason, you know? Well…all I know is, when I needed to get ahold of you, I called all my friends to see of they had seen you, and Chuck had, so…here I am.”
“But I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t you just go to my house and look there?”
“No one WAS there.”
“But why not just look for my mom? I mean, you would have a better chance of finding her than me, since you know her a lot better.”
“Well, apparently that ain’t the case.”
I heard cop sirens coming.
“Anyways, kid. I figured my time here on Earth has passed. I know there’s a better place for me. I know…somewhere, out there.”
“Wait…you don’t mean…Joey, that…this isn’t the way!”
:”That reminds me kid. Why do you always call me Billyboy?”
“I don’t know; it just fits well. But that’s off topic!”
The sirens were getting louder, and the cops were getting closer.
“Kid, you’ve helped me in more ways than you know. You’ve made me realize a lot of things. And for that, all I can do is to encourage you to not watch what I’m about to do.”
Yeah. You’re welcome, I thought.
“What about your friend, Josh?”
“Who?”
He thought for a few seconds.
“OH! Josh. I haven’t seen him in so long. Dang kid, you ask a lot of questions.”
By that time, cops were arriving and pointing there guns—for what, I’m not sure. One of the cops yelled through a megaphone “PUT YOUR HANDS UP! I REPEAT! RELEASE YOUR WEAPON, AND PUT YOUR HANDS UP!”
I put my hands up, though I doubt they were talking to me.
“Good seeing ya again, kid.” And he put his lights out.
BANG!
He dropped to the ground like a log. I can’t believe it. I just saw somebody commit suicide.
How could my life get any worse?
Just watch.
