The Proposal
A cool breeze swept across the lake, the water of the lake allowed itself to be carried on the current, sprinkling the air with it's clear spray. The wind brushed the leaves of the trees, scattering the crimson orange and red that littered the ground in magnificent, yet abstract, design. Two sat from the lake, their backs braced against a tree, their hands clasped side by side.
The current swept their hair gently, softly whipping it in the wind. The woman giggled as her silver-streaked jet black hair slapped itself in the face of her companion. He didn't seem to mind, though, only closing his eyes and smiled softly. He had brought her to this location for an evening picnic, or so he said. Actually, he, in fact, had another reason, one he had planned for years, and one he hoped would be followed through for the first time in a long time, since his last personal achievement.
She sighed, resting her head on his shoulder. "Eric", she whispered softly, her lips forming the name he loved to hear her say, "why did it have to be so long..."
Taking her hand into his, he raised her fingers to his mouth, kissing each of them in loving care. "No matter how long, it was worth it all in the end", he whispered to her ear, tenderly. "The wait is over....we're together...at last.."
She sighed, nuzzling his neck softly. "Tell me about the future....tell about us..."
Eric smiled. He brushed the hair from her face, gazing into her deep hazel eyes. Happiness echoed from these eyes, the eyes of a child, but the face of an beautiful woman. "We'll have a house of our own, a small house, enough for the two of us...a shop of our own...we'll have Candice and Sasha to stay with us, and enough room to house ourselves and maybe a few guests..."
"I like that", Diane mumbled, smiling faintly as she listened to his voice in earnest. He continued to speak. "A family of our own, maybe a few children, a business...the world will be ours, and no one's to take..."
Eric looked into her face, falling in love all over again as he relived the years he had spent with her, the months they had shared. There was no doubt, he had found love, he had waited for love, and now, he had earned love. Diane burrowed her head into the crook of his shoulder, her eyes closed as she imagined the future. "How much longer, dear...?"
He smiled, slipping a hand slowly into his pocket. He could feel his face turn red from anxiety, the heat radiated from his cheeks and ears. Eric pulled a small box from his pocket, holding it in front of her. "Diane...."
She opened her eyes slowly, staring at the object inside until her vision cleared. Her eyes twinkled slightly, he felt her breathe deeply, shallowly. "Say it..."
Eric smiled, closing his eyes. The future began to flow through his mind like a slideshow, from birth to what he pictured he would look as when he was older. Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes, noting she was looking directly back into his. Releasing his breath, he took his other hand, placing the box in hers, and covered it with his own. It was time. With the hope of tomorrow and a worryfree love between them, he said the words he had waited for so long to finally say.
"....Will you marry me?"
