[SS] Revenge

Postby Zunar » August 12th, 2015, 2:07 pm

A/N I got inspired by Magnen's recent short story and wrote up a little something. It's way shorter than hers, but I wanted to write something and I felt if I made it too long I would lose interest in it before I finished. I'm working on a different, longer short story, but have this for now. This was written in about an hour or two spontaneously, so feedback is appreciated.

Huff, huff, huff.

My breath comes in ragged gasps. My legs and lungs are burning. But, I can't stop running. If I stop, it's over.

There's a fork on the path ahead. My instinct tells me to go left, so I go that way.

Dead end. I turn around. The man that was chasing me stops and an evil smirk crosses his face.

"Now I've got you. There's nowhere to run."

My eyes dart around desperately for an escape route, but I can't find one.

He takes a few steps toward me and points his gun at my chest.

"At last, I can get my revenge for what you did to Rebecca..."

My eyes are focused on the gun and not him. I slowly back up, until I hit the wall behind me and can go no further.

He's still coming closer.

"Is this really what you want?!" I ask. "Murdering me won't bring her back, you know!"

He chuckles. "Of course it won't. She's gone, and you murdered her. You scum."

I cast my eyes around once more. No escape.

He finally stops advancing. "Don't worry, I'll make this as painless as possible. Just hold still and you won't feel a thing."

For a split second I consider trying to jump him, but think better of it. He's too far to reach, and at this range there's no way he'll miss.

He steadies his gun and aims right for my heart. "Say your prayers."

There's a gunshot.

I feel intense pain for a second, and then...

Blackness.

"Calling DB, this is unit A1, do you copy?"

I grab my radio and push the button.

"This is DB. Over."

"Have you reached your destination? Over."

"Yes. The rabbit is back in its burrow. Over."

"Good work. We're sending backup right now. Over and out."

I clip the radio back to my belt and look out from behind my hiding spot. This is it. We finally got a lead on the suspect, and this is where it led us.

I take a quick look around the area. It doesn't look like I was followed and there's nothing around. All I need to do is wait here and keep watch until the backup arrives. Simple, right?

Suddenly, I hear a scream from inside the house, and hear sounds of a struggle. If I wait on the backup, we might be too late. As quickly but stealthily as I can, I approach the house.

The door's unlocked and open. I creep in and listen for any more sounds.

I see a blur from the corner of my eye. I quickly turn and bring up my gun. ...Nothing? As I slowly advance, I hear a floor creak behind me and I roll sideways. I feel something rush past my face, mere inches away. I swiftly get on my feet and aim my gun.

It was a woman. She had swung a frying pan down on me. As soon as I saw her, I lowered my gun.

"You're Hathaway, right?"

She didn't reply.

I pull out my detective badge and show it to her.

"It's alright, I'm not here to hurt you. I heard a scream and came to investigate."

She's still standing where she was, frozen in fear.

"Is there something wrong here? Or was that scream my imagination?"

The woman runs off into another room.

"Wait!" I run after her.

BANG!

I turn a corner and see the woman lying on the floor, blood spilling on the floor beneath her.

I raise my gun and survey the room. Nobody here. I kneel down and quickly check the body. Shot through the heart. Definitely dead.

"What the hell?!"

I jump to my feet and turn toward the voice. There's a man standing in the doorway, looking upon the scene with shock.

"YOU!" His hand reaches into his pocket. I jump through the nearest doorway.

BANG!

He probably thinks I killed her. This is bad. I reach to my belt for my gun, but nothing's there. Damn it, I must've dropped it when I was checking the body.

I run out of the house and into the woods as fast as my legs will carry me. I snatch up my radio.

"DB to unit 1! The suspect is pursuing me! He is armed and dangerous! Do you copy?!"

The radio crackles, but only static is heard.

Frustrated, I thrust my radio back into my belt and keep running, weaving through the trees. I can hear the shouts and gunfire behind me, and the sounds of bullets hitting trees around me.

It's a long way back to the town. The only question is, can I run for that long? I have to. If I stop, I'm dead.

I have to keep running.
