Short Stories

Postby Oranjui » November 28th, 2010, 10:30 am

This is pretty self-explanatory. Post your short stories here, and follow the 2 rules: The stories should be short (no chapters, and no longer than about 70 lines), and absolutely NO "To Be Continued's." Also, you can write reviews of others' stories.

A Dream

...and we watch as it disappe.....nd the Moon ris.....nally, it is night.
Kayla woke up with a start. "Wha... Oh, it was a dream. Strange...," she said, under her breath. She ran downstairs to the kitchen and pulled out the Cheerios. She got a bowl, milk, and a spoon and started to pour in the cereal. Then, her mom came in. "Honey, why are you up so early? It's 6:00 A.M.," she said. Kayla told her mom that she had a strange dream, and she could only recall something about the Sun setting and the Moon rising. When she finally realized that 6 A.M. is almost too early for her, she went back to bed. Kayla was a 6th grader at Enlenson Elementary School, and she was an "A" student. It was Monday, but it had snowed a TON overnight, so the kids knew they had the day off. Kayla got back into bed, and pulled up the covers. But for half an hour, she couldn't get to sleep. Why did she have that dream? Maybe it was normal for things like that to happen. She was pretty sure it meant something, but what?

She felt like it was only 5 minutes, but Kayla had slept for three hours. "Kayla! Stop leaving your cereal on the table!" her dad screamed. Kayla groaned and got up. She picked up her warm, soggy cereal and dumped it out. As she was getting more, her little brother, Ben, walked in. Ben was a second grader at Enlenson. He asked, "Why didn't my alarm go off, Mommy?" She responded by telling him, "Didn't you see all the snow outside? It's a snow day!" After she finished eating, Kayla went to the living room to watch some TV. The first thing she saw was a Pampers commercial. After that finished, a different commercial that looked almost exactly like her dream came on. It turned out to be for a new board game, but why had she dreamed it? She didn't know, but Ben liked the look of the game. "Daddy, I want that!" :awe:

Here it is. It gives me chills....

REFLECTIONS

“Wow, does she even know how stupid she looks?”

“There’s the perfect example of a waste of space.”

“Look what the cat dragged in…”

They thought she couldn’t hear them, hear their hateful comments and scornful jokes. She could hear them, and very clearly at that. What did they think she was? A brick with no feelings to be broken?

She sat alone at lunch, her table being her only companion. The days dragged on at a snail’s pace. And at home, it wasn’t any better. Her parents had been on the edge of a divorce for at least 3 years now. She came home almost every day to yelling, angry bickering, and even the occasional throwing of something. Today was no different.

Sarah kept her eyes contently focused on the cracks on the sidewalk during her walk back from the torture she called school. The wind whipped her long chestnut hair around her face. She was a very pretty girl, however, it was her low self-esteem and lack of an emotional barrier that caused the taunts from her fellow classmates. She arrived shortly at her house and stepped over the threshold, only to hear the familiar sounds of a face-off between her parents. For the first time, Sarah took charge.

“Stop it! You two are breaking my life into pieces! Just quit it!” The tears welled up in her eyes and she frantically rushed to the bathroom, locking the door behind her. Her parent stared guiltily at each other and stood there, speechless.

In the bathroom, Sarah cried until she couldn’t anymore over the vanity. She saw her reflection in the mirror, and tentatively reached out to touch it.

“At least you’ll always be here for me.” She said to her inanimate reflection. Suddenly, she felt her hand slip through the surface of the mirror. “What?”

She pushed against the mirror more and she felt her forearms dip past the shiny surface. She thought for a second, until finally letting her face slip into the mirror. She gasped as she saw another bathroom on the other side. Predictably, everything was opposite. Finally, she let herself fade to the other side, climbing onto the shelf below the mirror and crouching through as if in a small tunnel.

The bathroom gave her a small sense of vertigo, everything being switched and whatnot. She was too ecstatic to stay in the bathroom. She had to go around the house to see how the reflections affected everything, but what if her parents were still fighting? She decided to take the risk and slid the door open.

Her mother and father were curled up on the couch together, tranquilly watching a soap opera and kissing each other on the cheeks frequently. Sarah, who was both very happy and very uncomfortable at the sight of it, slowly eked back into the bathroom.

“Sarah, honey, what are you doing in there? Come on out here and watch this with us! It’s getting to the good part! Oh, and Spencer is going to make us some popcorn soon, right honey?” inquired Sarah’s mother. Sarah’s father nodded compliably.

Sarah stepped out of the bathroom, “Er…um, I think I’ll just go upstairs and do my homework…” Sarah did just that.

“What is wrong with them? Where did this joyful attitude come from?” she thought. The night passed by in the same way, and when they had dinner (spaghetti and meatballs, Sarah’s favorite) Sarah’s parents acted like love-struck teenagers, playing with each others food. Sarah fell asleep confused but satiated with her parents new attitudes. Her sleep was dreamless.

With an awkward send-off, Sarah was on her walk to school again. Walking into school, she saw them, the people who had taunted her all her life, in pink aprons.

“Sarah!” said Johnny, their ringleader, “Guess what we made for you? Speechless? We made you cookies!” Johnny held out a tray of fresh cookies.

“Why?!” Sarah exclaimed. This was 10 times weirder than her parents changing. Then it hit her. “Not only were objects reflected in the mirror…but so were personalities…” she contemplated out loud.

“What mirror, silly?” asked Johnny. Sarah had to admit that Johnny, the star football player of her class, looked ridiculous in his rose apron and flowery oven mitts.

“Never mind,” replied Sarah.

The day continued, and soon, Sarah was losing her interest in this weird attitude all the students had attributed. At first she loved the comments about how beautiful her hair was and how lovely her outfit matched her eyes, but the extra attention was about to drive her insane. At lunch, the floodgates opened:

“Stop it! You people are making this un-enjoyable…I need space! Just quit it!” The crowd around her just laughed dismissively. Sarah recognized the words that just came out of her mouth. She had said similar words before.

On her stroll back home, the crowd just tagged along. Soon, Sarah just sprinted the remaining way. When she got inside, she again locked herself inside the bathroom. But this time is was to make a decision. Should she stay or go home?

“I’ve almost got it…Aha!” Sarah’s real father proclaimed as he unlocked the door and swung it open. He and his wife looked around the bare room. “Where is she?! Sarah?!”

Sarah’s mother looked in the mirror over the vanity and her heart skipped a beat. “I think I found her, Spencer…” she said.

Sarah had made her decision. She was going home. She missed her real parents. And she had decided to finally alert a teacher about the incessant bullying from her peers. Then she noticed something. The mirror had become transparent, and she could see her parents standing there on the other side.

“Quick Spencer! Break it and get her out!” screamed Sarah’s mother, Alice. Spencer quickly ran and got a bat from the garage.

“We’re going to save you, honey!! Don’t worry!” said Alice when Spencer came back. Spencer swung the bat and it shattered the mirror into shiny shrapnel.

Sarah hid under the sink when the glass came shooting in large shards. She screamed and stood up after it was all over. She ran her left hand over the blank wall behind the shattered mirror…She was trapped.

She cradled her head in her hands, slid into the corner of the room, and cried. Reflections couldn’t save her now.

Yeah, I know Jello's story was way over the limit, but I had approved of it. And BTW Jello, great story.

EDIT: I made the max length longer, so that stories won't be insanely short.

He was using good syntax.

A story with good syntax wrote:"Th-th-this can't be happening..." I said.

"What's happening, pal?" I turned my head to see a random passingby kid. He seemed to be trustworthy, so I told him.

I seemed to have caught the interest of the kid. He kept hearing my story interestingly, without any comments. I finished telling my story.

He nodded. "Well, that's quite a trouble you got into."

"Yeah, I know." I said with a kinda sad smile...

You will never believe what happened to me this morning! I was waking up and doing my morning routine, eat breakfast, take a shower, brush my teeth, that sort of thing. When I was about to get changed, I saw something in my window that looked a little strange. I went to look and there he was, a man was staring through my window on a ladder!

Just as soon as he knew I saw him he started climbing down the ladder and I ran for the door outside. On my way out I grabbed the bat I keep under my bed. When I got outside I saw him running down my block and I began chasing after him. We ran for nearly 10 minutes and reached some woods. Then from there we ran another 15 until I lost sight of him.

Lost, in the middle of the woods, chasing a peeping Tom. I knew something like this could only happen to me.

The search seemed over when a bit deeper in the woods I heard the man scream. I ran out there and saw him sitting on the ground a good distance away from me. As I got closer I could see he had gotten his foot stuck in a bear trap! Actually I’m not so sure it was a bear trap because it was a bit smaller but you get the point. I walked up to him with my bat and said the sweetest one liner I could think up on the spot.

“Game over f******” and I hit him in the face with my bat. He began to sob a bit as he held his bleeding nose, but to my surprise he began to laugh. This startled me so I hit him again and said “what’s funny fa****!” and he said, “read the first word of all the paragraphs.”

Mah new story.

Snow Days

Thursday, 5:45 P.M.
"...and a blizzard warning for the whole county. Boy, it's gonna be a REALLY white Christmas here."
I hate it when they make those puns on the weather. I mean really, puns SUCK.
"This strange weather has made people's heads spin, it's like another ice age! It's only late November, and just a couple days ago it was 60 degrees out. Now, it's only 5!"
Okay, now that's different. "Jared, dinnertime!" Mom yelled.
I turned off the TV and sprinted down the hallway, because we were having spaghetti.
"Do you want sauce, meat, or both?"
"Just sauce!"

Thursday, 7:00 P.M.
It's almost pitch black outside. Snow is really killing the visibility. I can't even see the streetlights.
I don't know whether we'll be snowed in tomorrow, or if it'll be a snow day, or what, but it's gonna keep snowing all night, as they say.

Friday, 1:35 A.M.
WOOSH!
I woke up, startled. TAP, TAP, TAP.
Ugh, that tree needs to be trimmed or something.
Well, I can see the streetlights, now. A little bit. Through the top of my window...
It looks like there's a real pile of snow out there. And the wind is blowing fast.
The drifts are ever-changing, white powder falling off the roof, swirling white dots.
I'm starting to doze offffvvv....

Friday, 9:50 A.M.
..Uuhh... Soooo tiirreeed... Wait.. What!? 9:50!? I'm late fo- Oh yeah, we're snowed in. Obvious snow day.
"Temperatures have dropped far below zero overnight, and they still are low! All school for the st-state of Min-KSH-ota has b-been can-KKKSH-ed. With a r-cord brea-ng n-n-n-KKSHHHHSHSHSH-negative twen-KKKKSHSHHHHHSSKKSHSHHHSH...."
The lights flickered out, TV got all fuzzy, I could barely do anything. And since the house wasn't well insulated, and it was a full black-out, the temperature was dropping.

Friday, 11:00 A.M.
Why is it so c-c-col-ld? I thought, as I was waking up. Then it hit me. Snow day...
I went to the closet and put on my coat. The lights were slowly coming back on, and I decided to check the weather.
All bundled up, I turned on the TV and heard the weatherman say, "-ghts are coming back on. I hope you're getting cozy, because it's about to get even colder, snowier, and windier outside."
My mom came in then. It seemed like she just woke up, and followed by her was Dad.
They had coats, mittens and all the rest on just like me. I'm gonna go back to sleep...

Friday, 2:25 P.M.
The window's completely blocked out now, and I'm seriously considering flooding the house with hot water.
Speaking of water, I'm really thirsty right now. Hungry, too.
I warmed up some leftover spaghetti in the microwave, and started eating.
After I finished lunch... Well, this isn't important. I'm gonna check the weather.

Friday, 2:40 P.M.
Well, this isn't a surprise. I can't watch TV, the dish is covered in snow. But it's getting a little warmer in here...

Friday, 5:30 P.M.
This is just the day that I need. I'm getting ALL of my much-needed sleep.
The snow on the window is starting to go down, but it looks like there's another black-out ahead.
The lights are dimming, and it's getting cold again. I still have my winter clothes on, and I'm getting a BLANKET now! How cold is it gonna get?
BZZZT!
Oh my God, the light just broke!
Mom came in and gasped.
"HOLY S***!" Dad blurted out. Mom started cleaning up the glass, and Dad just stood there in shock.
He looked kinda strange, with a parka on in the house, mouth open.
Mom was wearing thick boots, 2 semi-thick jackets, gloves, 2 pairs of jeans, and thick wool socks over her normal ones.
Dad had handwarmers in his thin gloves, and so did I, except my gloves were pretty thick.
The temperature was getting extreme, and it looks like things are literally freezing outside.
It stopped snowing a while ago, and I can see that it's still really windy.
For some unknown reason, there's still a bird here, and it's trying to walk against the wind, but it, the snow, and the subzero temperatures are all slowing it down.

Saturday, 2:15 P.M.
I slowly opened my eyes, and looked around. It was cool in the room, and the walls were white.
At that time, I noticed I wasn't in my house, but in a hospital! Also, my skin was a very light pale.
The clock showed that I had been out cold (literally) for almost a day.

Saturday, 2:50 P.M.
I have just been informed that I had had hypothermia and a bad case of frostbite.
I had been knocked out by the conditions in the house soon after the light had broken.
Also, I'm gonna be sleeping for a while, so.. Yeah.

Monday, 5:00 P.M.
That was the longest nap I've ever taken! I've also never fasted for that long..

Tuesday, 8:00 A.M.
It turns out that it's so snowy (and will be snowier) that they're cancelling all school until the week after next week!
SNOW DAYS!

Re: Short Stories

Postby Oranjui » January 14th, 2011, 9:57 pm

Whee! Bumpity bump-bump!

New short story, here goes.

Division by Zero Underground
"ARRRGGHH!! Stupid thing!"
Carl banged on the computer.
His search for "pie" was taking forever, because, as everyone knows, there are tons of different pies out there.
But in reality, that wasn't the cause.
"What the..."
As the tiny dot grew bigger, Carl knew he had a problem.
He clicked it, nothing happened.
He pressed Escape, nothing happened.
He pressed the Shut Down button, nothing happened.
Carl's computer was being slowly consumed by a virus, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
Then, it doubled. And again, and again. It kept multiplying, until there were at least 100.
As they moved off the screen, the one got huge and burst. His computer blacked out.
Carl immediately phoned his friends, but the worm had gotten to the entire phone network, and every other piece of technology in existence.

"Muh huh huh..."
Even though his computer had been obliterated too, Eduardo was happy.
There would be no traces to him, as the virus was strong enough to destroy all networks, fast enough to finish them off before he even could be traced, and was smart enough to destroy itself after wiping everything out.
Eduardo's freetime was almost always spent doing this sort of thing, except his freetime was ALL the time.
And virus making was for pure pleasure where he came from:
"Underground, where you are completely concealed;
Underground, where nothing is illegal;
Underground, leave no trace;
Underground: The place."
Then Eduardo was nuked.
THE END! :awe:
