[LL:C2]Character build/Equipment discussion

Postby Conn1496 » June 19th, 2014, 4:30 pm

Just thought I'd make a thread on LL:NS for people to share character builds and general preferences. It's interesting to see where people go with these things, and generally, you can get some really good ideas from other people.

I use a couple of builds:
The first focusing on magical damage, using the Thorn Staff (Which is more cost effective than the Frozen Tome IMO. Plus, I just like the bouncing effect. :D) and Elf Sword. 3 Book of battles +2 before you upgrade the Upgrade shop, and past that, Brown Books, as they're just more cost effective for upgrading. Then the rather obvious (-but awesome) Wizard Slippers. Weapons aren't really worth upgrading. -probably best to focus on the Books, really.
The other build is a speedrunning build which... Is a bit out of control. Using the Frozen Tome or Handcuffs (They both have +1 speed.), you basically kick and/or spellsling your way to victory. I tend to use one of both so your kicks can atleast become decent too as a backup when you're out of mana. I also use x3 book of winds (You see where this is going.), and Winged Boots, for the extra Jump/Speed. Again, not really worth upgrading the weapons, the Books will buff the Tome, and your kicks are a backup either way. Jump height can net you some really mad shortcuts too so it's worth the time to upgrade. Should also be noted that for speedrunning a couple of levels, a Halberd might be a good backup to hit lightbulb switches through walls.

Very early-game I also used an Axe/Horn build which is okay, but incredibly lame in late-game as Axes are instantly outclassed by pretty much everything past the Thorn Staff (The Thorn Staff itself being basically a Direct Upgrade.). The Axe still retains some credibility when playing Melee builds though (If that's your preference.), but is easily outclassed/completely replaced by the Amethyst Blade as it costs nothing to fire and it too also goes off Physical Power. -as a secondary weapon, it still kinda falls short, as it's probably best to put Handcuffs as your secondary for improved kicks and the +1 Physical Attack. Though Axes are a nice, spammable Physical projectile, so at that point it's totally personal preference between Kicks and Axes.

...If only there was a Book Of Thorns weapon. Now that I'd use! :V

wepL:handcuffs
wepR:handcuffs
Acc1:book of wind
Acc2:book of wind
Acc3:book of wind
Shoe:spiked boots => winged shoe

Makes the game quite challenging which I enjoy. Until you get to the dimension 15 ultra secret then I can't help but use excalibur when doing next playthroughs.

I've used that build before for speedrunning. But that was before I got the Frozen Tome. lol
I do like kick builds though, makes the game really kinda fun.

What do the books really affect? I can't figure that out.

Thank you, FF.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.
