Review/rate your "old self," in terms of Level Designing

Postby CedarBranch » March 30th, 2013, 11:52 am

I seem to have become slightly less unusual about the way I design. I've also "thrown away" some habits that led select players astray.
I'm even losing interest in the "Main Levels sequence" thing, causing me to potentially remove that idea... with some regrets.
Lastly, I've become more aware of many aspects that make a level good, and what may be considered "unusual."

Right now, I'd rate my old LDing self with a 3.005/5.

Myself in 2008: 1/10
I would tell you to look at my old levels, but they're so crappy I'm ashamed. Just know you can find them on the forums...if you really want to.

Myself now: 5/10
I'm better than I was, but there's still lots of room to improve.

After taking a Game Design course over my summer a couple of years ago, I look back at my old levels and say to myself, "What the hell was I thinking when designing this crap?"

9001/10

Now a bit more serious, can't really tell. It's always like bad --> mediocre (Fire Zone) --> good (Green Path) --> Very good (Ghostly Cave : D) --> mediocre (Nwinter/Luigi's Castle) --> bad (19th LDC)--> mediocre --> good etc. (Mad Piano : D)

I'll just go with 4/5 because today I actually feel like saying something good about myself

2009 3/10
2010 5/10
2011 9/10
2012-now 6.5/10

Quite frustrating to see how much I fail recently. I don't feel like going more into my old self, cause it would be too long cause several different designers, styles and so on. Something that always stayed the same were trying as much new things as possible and judging by people's opinion if I gonna use it more often or screw it again.

2011- 3/10
2012- 6/10
Now- 8/10

That's my personal opinion. I won't deny that I've started to like my levels more recently.

If you never picked it up before, I'm very self confident.

I don't think I started off terrible. My first few portal levels were me playing around with different item mechanics. They weren't real "levels" as much as they were experiments. For example, I found out that you could go just slightly below y=0 before you "fall out," and made a level where you had to fly underneath a gear to get the shine.

At the very least, my first two level series were short yet still enjoyable. I remember making the stereotypical big bully boss battles and made a short quest out of that(I think there was one level set in a ruined tower that had a few cool gimmicks) and I really liked making the SMG themed levels, which I made a few levels for (Usu referenced one in his 9th LDC entry).
2010, I still think my 7th LDC deserved more than what it got (7/20 from Moy, 12-15 from others). And I think that's when I stopped making levels as often as I did.

Witblo gets introduced and I place in 10-12, so that's where those come from; it's pretty much given that the levels I made then were great, most significantly on the graphical scale, and 2013 I haven't made anything yet.
