Last Legacy: Null Space update!

We've updated Last Legacy Null Space! First of all, we improved the ending level and resulting cinema and credits. There are also a few new graphics in the level designer that we have created for the upcoming Java version of Last Legacy. We decided to also add to the Null Space LD since they'll be useful for level portal and contest submissions while we are working on the Java game. Among the new items are house building blocks and some vegetation provided by BY. There are also some new LD keyboard shortcuts that were rather long overdue:

New Last Legacy Website!

It's here, lastlegacy.us!

A new website all about Last Legacy has been under development for the past couple of weeks and is finally ready to be unveiled.

With this website I am also launching a wordpress blog for Last Legacy, which I may or may not keep updated.

The new website has a section for a more advanced level portal which allows you to upload screenshots and a preview picture for your level as well as search tags. Many new features are planned to be added to this level portal later on. The new portal requires a separate account from Runouw.com, sorry. I considered for a long time whether or not to let it use runouw.com's accounts for authentication but decided against it.

The ending cinematic is not finished, so it might feel unsatisfactory. I'd like if anyone can suggest a way they would like the ending to be told. Also, I plan for there to be a credits level similar to the one in Chapter 1.

So, before I release the game, I would like to know what you think of it so far. With help from your suggestions, I'll make several more updates and bug fixes to get this game finished as soon as I can. Try to break every item so that I can balance them in the final release. Last Legacy: Null Space Beta (update)

Update!

This is a quick update, mostly to unlock the level designer. There's still a bunch of fixes I want to do such as making the controls customizable. I'll try to get those done in a future update.

Change log:

- Fixed crash on some browsers when starting up the game.

- Level designer unlocked so you can try it out.

- Music added to story levels that were missing them.

Note:

- Content in level designer are subject to change. There is an inconsistency with how equipables will be dealt with in the level designer right now.

- Most songs are unplayable in the level designer because I wanted to cut down the filesize for the beta. (The remaining songs happen to be the ones used in the story mode levels)

- There is an item for water, however the water is incomplete.

Last Legacy: Null Space Beta

It's here!

With this iteration of Last Legacy, we are attempting a shorter length game for the sake of improving the gameplay and the battle system. It's somewhat of a mini edition to the Last Legacy series. We are aiming to solve the issues that Chapter 1 faced, such as the lag, lack of an advanced battle system, lack of an upgrade system, and certain levels being too frustrating to complete. You may be a little unhappy about the length of levels in this release, but be assured that the next game is planned to be a lot more grand than this one.

The last few levels are locked in this beta (because the final boss battle and final level have not been completed yet). Also, the level designer is locked in this beta because the new items haven't had their UI completed yet.

Please leave feedback regarding your experiences playing through the game.

SM63 and the level portal will continue to remain on this site until I personally receive a cease and desist. I recommend that you download the .exe while you still can.

I am not saddened by this event, instead I'd rather see it as a chance to move on and keep working on my own intellectual properties. The release of Last Legacy is drawing near and that is my main focus for now.

23rd LDC comes to a close!

After about two months of this LDC being up and running, and with only about 7 entrants, it finally comes to a close.

The winner turns out to be MP3 Amplifier with her series The Science War. In second place was newest collab team JSlayerXero & NanTheDark with their unusual level Hall of the Editor; and in third place was Volcove with Fear Factory.

However, because of the lack of entrants, we only had 1 ribbon handed out this LDC for 4th place, and that was to Triple J with his level Weather Works. Overall, this LDC was actually rather close in scores- the highest score being 16.44 and the lowest placing score for 4th place being 15.34. The 23rd LDC topic has been graveyarded now.

Nothing is told yet about the 24th LDC or any future LL LDCs.

Information about the new update

So I should start off reviewing stuff I've revealed in earlier posts, the main character looks completely different. He has certainly changed a lot as we have tried and improved our graphics style. The controls have been drastically altered too. Starting in 2009, the main character is a magic-user who can use the power to control time aka "Delta". He wields a staff back then, but later the design changed to a sword. In the most recent design he still remains cloaked (even after a moment where his design included having his face clearly visible).

On slightly different news, the 22nd LDC (Fire-themed) comes to a finish as the top 6 placers are announced! The winner is blackyoshi with his addictive, though rather small, fun play Underwhere, so congratulations to him! In second place, is the one and only Volcove, who continues to lead the level designing world with his unusual level with his unforgettable concept, Sea of Fire. Then in 3rd place, is the slightly underrated level designer KABOOM, with his two-part level Infernal Tower, which involves a tower involving many fun challenges and a very firey final boss. In 4th, 5th and 6th places we have Melty Magma Lair by MegaR, Asphodel Temple by Star king and Volcano of Irony by Karyete and MP3 Amplifier.

The 23rd LDC isn't expected to start until half a month, perhaps longer, after the results of this LDC.

That's all for now, thanks for reading!

The 20th LDC ends with a winner decided!

2012-08-23

The 20th LDC ends with a winner decided!

The LDC dedicated to all things Mario ran by Mario himself (played expertly by 30-year old user representative extraordinare Doram Baramour) ended this early morning at around 4:00 am PST.

The winner, in a surprise twist, was moderator Buffooner, who finally graduated from bridesmaid to bride after entering nine LDCs over the entire history of the site!

Buffooner's level, which scored a staggering 17.69, was a flawless, perfect tribute to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, creating a new level, Shyguy Island, in a flawless replica. Buffooner faced many challenges, including losing both of his collaborates and having to rescue this level out of the ashes of the collaboration, as well as having a simple platformer level compete against a story-driven series, a full new Mario level series with six boss battles and many other high-caliber platformers, concepts and tributes. In the end, though, Buffooner defeated a whopping 26 competitors to grab the gold medal, as well as one of the highest scoring levels of all time (as well as the highest scoring 'pure platformer' level of all time.)

Competition was straight on his heels, though, with rising designer SuperMIC finally creating a successful execution to one of his high-concept works. His Super Paper Mario (Wii) prequel, Timpani and Blumiere: The Untold Story, told the story of the two famous characters of the Wii game, being one of the very few successful tellings of a romance over level. SuperMIC was well known for trying many high-concept story/platformer crossovers, but was often a victim of the circumstances of competing in a level designer contest. This time, he beat the challenges and finished his series, and it paid off, giving him incredibly high critical acclaim, and a finish just barely behind Buffooner, with a 17.62 out of 20 (the highest score ever given to a silver medalist, passing the former leader by nearly half a point). SuperMIC shows that the recent trend of story-driven levels is certainly not a fluke and that it is possible to create good levels outside of the typical platformer concept.

Third place is certainly not to be forgotten. Two gold medalists, one fresh off of her victory, teamed up to create a gigantic game-within-a-game, Super Mario Adventure: Mirror Island, which took players through new levels to fight a new villain while facing custom-made bosses that resembled enemies of Mario's past. It's a staggering build and came with many challenges in its construction, and as a result suffered only from being hard to load and a few minor bugs. Regardless, it took a bronze trophy with pride, with a score of 17.375 that topped their prior gold medalists and became the highest scoring bronze medalist of all time.

The ribboning entrants were also exceptional platformers. Perpetual fourth-placer Nwolf designed a surprisingly solid Super Mario 64 remake and a stellar solar interpretation of a favorite Mario Kart racetrack at once in Big Boo's Rainbow Road which scored a recordbreaking 16.81. Recent legend blackyoshi also took on SMW2: YI with two staggering, maze-like levels under the name Yoshi Mania, which scored fifth with 16.17. In sixth was old-school designer Kirby859, who creates his most acclaimed level since 2009 with a tribute to the online culture's greatest Mario challenge- Kaizo World, with a small but fiery level named Not Tubular.

Overall, this LDC was a stunning success and was a fitting 20th Contest and a fitting Mario tribute. Congratulations to everyone who entered and for those who didn't, fret not! Click on the comments to try out all of the levels that were entered into this excellent LDC!

Small Last Legacy Graphics Update

We've decided to keep you guys updated on some of the progress we are making on Last Legacy, so here is a picture displaying some of the new things.

<center>

<img src="/images/news/llupdate6_24_2012.png"></img>

</center>

This is the main character. As you can see, his appearance has radically been changed since the last playable demo. He is now sprited in a style matching the rest of the game's graphics.

New collectable items have been made. For example, here is a heart. They heal you. This particular heart will heal about half of your health. There will be smaller hearts that can be dropped by enemies which heal less.

The hit-able switches have been redisgned. They are now slightly wider and do not require jumping to activate.

In the case that you put certain tiles next to each other, rather than having sharp cutoff edges, certain tiles will have a more natural transition of the different terrain types.

Among the differences from the current released beta include a larger screen resolution (640x480), new character/enemy graphics, various new items/backgrounds/trees/collectibles/interactive stuff. Unfortunately, we don't have anything actually playable to show yet. At the moment, we are currently rewriting some of the core pieces of code for the game in order to improve performance and organization of the code. Hopefully in a month or so we will post the Level Designer with all the new features.

The portals here represent the location of some of the levels we have planned. Also, we have an idea that for the near future we pick an area on the map and hold a level designing contest where people try to create the most fitting level. The winning levels may appear, in some form, in future versions of the game.

Note that the current engine for the character's movement is slightly outdated. In the final version, the character will have a double jump and ledge-grabbing ability, which will increase his max jump height by about 1 tile.

New version of website released! (runouw.com version 3.0)

I'm back! After such a long time (It's been school that has been taking up all of my free time). So I bring you the long-awaited update to the site's layout that I started working on more than 5 months ago (With a big, 5 month pause in the middle due to school)

Look at the new, sleek layout! This time around I tried to get rid of all of the unnecessary borders from the old layout and in general clean things up.

There has also new additions such as the Music page. Where we showcase some of the excellent songs my brother has written for our upcoming games (there are many more songs to come with future updates). Other updates include a revision of the Games section which removes the old half-beta games I gave up years ago. And a revised About page which better summarizes the site.

The Levels page has now been renamed to Portal and includes the links to the newer level portal for both Last Legacy and Super Mario 63. And the old level portal for Super Mario 63 is now going to be discontinued. Meaning that you can't post levels there anymore.

Small update to Last Legacy

2011-01-06

Small update to Last Legacy

A few new things have been added such as Level Transitions (including vertical ones), and the ability to change the background. There is a new song added (Or rather that one old song, but redone without MIDI instruments) Also, some bugs have been fixed (you can now move Color Changing Boxes and Delta Negate Boxes with the "Item Move" command), and you are now forced to restart the level if you fall off the bottom. You can now load levels with a copy-paste code instead of pasting it into a new file and loading it (Later, I might make it possible to copy the code to clipboard like it was SM63).

Soon, I will be adding in features like respawn points (which could be controlled by triggers). And I will also give triggers the ability to change the background and play music.

Beta Level 1 and 2 have been slightly modified to include Level Transitions.

Happy New Years + Last Legacy Beta Released!

Happy New Years + Last Legacy Beta Released!

You can now all try out the new level designer featuring:

- Morphing tiles for easier tile placement<br>

- Moving platforms with custom paths<br>

- Custom blocks/planets with gravity<br>

- Copy, Paste, Undo functions added.<br>

- Multiple item selecting possible.<br>

- A second background layer for tiles.<br>

- Ability to change the color of tiles in both layers.<br>

- Customizable switches!!!<br>

</p>

<br>

<p>But here is a list of incomplete things (so you don't complain about it):<br>

- Lava (Can't hurt you, and can only properly flow sideways)<br>

- HP, lives, getting hurt, getting squished, etc.<br>

- Battle system. (I will try to improve it later with more attacks that use MP, and make better enemies)<br>

- Respawning, (checkpoints will be added later)<br>

- Level transitions (But the good news is, you can make levels much larger before it lags as much as in SM63)<br>

- More backgrounds/tiles/items/songs<br>

- Sound effects<br>

- Songs only repeat once (A small bug I realized after I uploaded it...)<br>

- Color transformations on items and planets...<br>

- Switches in the future will be able to create an earthquake effect, play sound effects, change the background and music playing, imitate the SM63 block appearing switches (they CAN already do this, but I will make an easier way), etc.<br>

- Enemies and gravity changing do not mix properly yet.<br>

- Water doesn't exist yet.<br>

- You don't die from falling off the level yet...<br>

</p>

<br>

<a href="http://www.runouw.com/games/lastlegacy.php">Play it here!</a>

<br>

Also, you won't die if you fall off the level. So if you get stuck, just press backspace and play the level again.

July 2010 Update

July 2010 Update

Here is the anniversary update:

<center>

<object width="500" height="400"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z5IE5XptR_w&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z5IE5XptR_w&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="500" height="400"></embed></object>

</center>

<p class="indent">

Here is a video preview of the project (now officially deemed Last Legacy) we have been working on for a while now. Among some of the new features are moving platforms with all the old SM63 options plus custom paths and orbiting while the center moves. There is a new Castle tileset and a bunch of new vegetation focusing on customizable trees, vines, etc. Planets and large rotating blocks can now have gravity and move just like platforms do. Plus the new song in the video is planned to be used in the game. Comments and criticism are welcome (just don't complain about the dislocated x button or layering issues [this update was rushed due to the anniversary 7/27]).

New video released

2010-04-02

New video released

New video released showing off the new features in the level designer:

<center>

<object width="500" height="405"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWJchFH8u4I&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWJchFH8u4I&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="500" height="405"></embed></object>

</center>

<p class="indent">

This new video shows off how easy it is to create ground in the level designer with only four basic pieces. Another big improvement is being able to select multiple tiles and items at once. You can also copy, paste, and delete a large group of selected items/tiles. There\'s also an undo and redo feature not shown in the video. There is now a background layer of where you can carve any mountain or graphic you want without having the character collide with it. You can toggle which graphical layers are visible, view tiles when they do not conform, and toggle if the grid is shown. A new feature is turning a group of tiles into a planet or rotating block, which are planned to have fully customizable movements, settings, and gravity control.

Small Content Update

Since it's been so long, here's a picture:

<img src="http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/5389/febprev2.png"></img>

<p class="indent">

That level was made in a few minutes using the new level designer, which I must say is already much better than the one in SM63. New features include an undo/redo button, selecting multiple tiles and items, and placing tiles in a second background layer. On top of that, as you've seen from the previous video, tiles can connect graphically to their neighboring tiles without painstakingly doing it yourself.

A new gameplay video!

2010-01-01

A new gameplay video!

Happy new years! As a little present, here is a video of parts of the gameplay for our upcoming game.

<br>

<center>

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NGceikc2S5s&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NGceikc2S5s&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x2b405b&color2=0x6b8ab6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

</center>

<br>

<p class="indent"> Everything shown in the video was made 100% free from other copyright infringements, even the song (which I would your criticism on). Many of the graphics are still in their beta form -- in fact, the water was programmed from scratch the very day the video was made (which explains why I tried to avoid touching water) -- and the gameplay will probably be changed a lot before it is released, particularly in the direction of battling and solving puzzles. However, the game is still many months away from a playable demo, and many more months from the official release.

<br><br>

As you can see in the video, the game features a unique ability to alter the terrain around you. You can remove tiles or add in new tiles. This will be used to solve puzzles or reach new areas as you gain new abilities in the game. There is also planned to be a wide variety of magic attacks to unleash upon your enemies and bosses.

A Sneak Preview??

A Sneak Preview??

<p class="indent"> We have leaked a screen shot (or actually mock-up) of the next project we hope to be working on. It is a battle-based puzzle-platformer with destructible/morph-able terrain, featuring 100% non-copyrighted content (and music!), with the graphics made custom by us (not a good idea...). The game play will be largely free-roaming around a huge world (like Legend of Zelda) and solving tricky contraptions in dungeons to stop the world from morphing into a giant wasteland.

<br>

<br>

Here's one of the songs planned to be used in the game (it's a battle song):

New website!

I've finally stated making a website... Just started programming it from scratch 2 days ago. There are lots of features planned, like the Level Designer portal that will let you vote on other peoples levels. I\'ll be adding an option to play the specific level you are viewing with a button so you don\'t have to waste time loading the game and copying in the code.

Super Mario 63 is finally completed

Here's an old video of Super Mario 63 I made over a year ago.

Its just a short clip of the beginning of Bowsers castle. The full level in the complete version of the game takes me about half of an hour to complete! D:
I don't have a good enough computer to record sound and video at the same time. Plus I coded the game to slow down to 7 fps so I could speed up the video later and capture each frame with higher quality.
