29th Level Designing Contest

Thumbs up x3

Postby ~Yuri » February 23rd, 2015, 5:19 am

Hello all, and welcome to the 29th Level Designing Contest! The one place where veterans, and newcomers design levels and compete between each other!

Spectator: But... How does a Level Designing Contest work?

Glad you asked, spectator! Let me explain everything below:

Basics
Judging
Rules

Basics

First of all, you must know what an LDC is, right? An LDC is a contest, where we give a theme and a deadline for you to make a level, and then your level will compete with other levels made with the same time and theme as well.

Your level then, will receive an score from people that we call Judges. Those people will give an score from 1 to 20 to your level, and then the levels that got the highest scores from judges, will win the LDC, and gain a Medal or a Ribbon to display on your profile!

The 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place will gain Medals:
:ldcm1: :ldcm2: :ldcm3:

And the 4th place, 5th place, and 6th place will gain Ribbons:
:ldc4: :ldc5: :ldc6:

Awesome, right? So, you might be wondering, what is the theme you must follow for this contest?

So, with no delay, I present you:
Image
Banner made by our awesome artist and Level Moderator, Star king!

Yup, that's right, grasslands! A very open theme indeed. You can make mountains, fields, forests, or hay, even underground grasslands! The only limit is your imagination!

Spectator: But, how will judging work? What must I watch out for in my level?

Judging

As I said before, your level will be judged by a total of 4 people, and receive an score from 1 to 20 from them. Then we will average the scores, and announce the winners. But judges don't simply judge a level with an score. They judge using specific categories. Here are the categories the judges will look for in your level:

Gameplay: 10 points out of 20
This category judges how the playstyle of your level is. Is your level fun, or is it frustating? Is there something innovative in your level, or is it boring? Is it a puzzle, a story, or a platformer? If so, is it well executed?

Scenery: 5 points out of 20
This category judges the scenery of your level. Is your level beautiful, or is it really ugly? Is the decoration well placed, or are there floating items everywhere? Did you place the tiles in a beautiful way, or do they look plain boring?

Miscellaneous: 5 points out of 20
This category judges everything else about your level that was not included in the two categories above. In this category, you start with 3 points, and then the judges will add or take points for things you have done right or wrong.
Is there lag, or spam in your level? Is there too much loading time? Is there a really nice detail the judges liked about your level?

This time, people won't be allowed to apply for judging. I'll send messages to people I want to judge, instead.

Spectator: Ok then. Is there anything else I must follow?

Rules

These, are some rules you must follow, like everywhere else in this forums. Some were already mentioned, but I'll give you a reminder below:

  1. Your level must fit with the theme, otherwise, it will not be judged.
  2. Your level must be finished within the deadline. Extensions will only be given in special cases.
  3. You can make level series. However, level series can only have a maximum amount of 3 levels.
  4. Collaborations with other members are allowed! However, collaborations are limited to two people.
  5. Don't swear on your levels, or have any kind of profanity on them! There are children who play Super Mario 63 too!
  6. Only levels posted in the vault will be judged.
  7. Any sight of flaming, spamming or conflict inside the LDC will result in an instant warning.

The contest will finish on April 11h, 23:59 PST.
Extensions: MessengerOfDreams and Star king / NanTheDark and FrozenFire until April 12th 23:59 PST

Here's the Standalone Level Designer for you to design your levels,

And here's the Level Vault, where you must post your levels to participate.

And with this, I'm off. If you still have any question, post below and we'll do our best to help you! Good luck!

Fixed minor mistakes, like where you wrote that Misc started at 5 points instead of 3

I probably won't be entering this. Better to just admit that now than entering a barely started level.

Rating standards: show
1 star: (0 - 5.75 in LDC) These levels need a lot of work. They're totally un-elaborated, and/or inherently flawed due to things like cutoff or enemy spam, or they're untested and there are too many bugs gameplay-wise, in short: Many many things went wrong in such a level.

2 stars: (6 - 9.75) These levels are not terrible, but poor. They're too short, lack scenery or they have errors and/or bugs but it's still barely enjoyable. Again, spend more effort and try to do better. (if it's your first level that I rate two stars, it's not bad. There's a long way you can still go)

3 stars: (10 - 12.75) These levels are about mediocre. They may be still a little bit short, the gameplay is fine but not very original and graphics are also solid, but not breath-taking. Try to keep improving!

4 stars: (13 - 15) These levels are nice, but not the best. Effort has been put into them, there can some professionality be seen in gameplay and graphics, they're a nice experience to play, but there are still things you can do to make it even better. Try to go the extra mile!

5 stars: (15.25 - 20) These are really great levels, those which, as said, I would give more than 15 in an LDC. These suffice many high requirements, and it already goes into subtleties if you want to make them better. These levels are successful all around. Bravo.

These are just general principles I try to follow when rating. Sometimes I don't leave a further comment when rating, most times I do, if you have questions about it, feel free to ask further.

EXCITEMENT! EXHILARATION! EX-plosions? ... Yes. EXPLOSIONS!

Also way to go in improving theme accessibility this time around, this should be pretty easy to work with and I'll very likely be entering this one.

I'm going to use this LDC as an excuse to become more active. :)

EDIT: Oh gosh I think MoD's ego is going to shoot out the roof and into the stars if FF's level "Messenger of Dreams" gets a medal in this, let alone win the LDC, lol.

I feel like I can crank out a small, simple level to this. Better than blowing my load on trying to create the new best level ever and getting like 15 points. Plus there's a song I really want to create a short graphical masterpiece to.

More importantly I really hope the talent showing up in the portal enter the LDC, because it's an easy theme to make levels to and I think some of the designers are legit contenders.

That reminds me, both of you only need a 4th place ribbon to complete your medal collection and accomplish what only Volkove has accomplished yet
