Re: Halloween Story Contest 2016

Postby Oranjui » October 29th, 2016, 6:46 am

Whipped up a thing really quickly between last night and this morning (I accidentally fell asleep about 2/3 of the way through). First proper story I've attempted in a looong time. Thanks for the deadline extension btw <3
Last: show
// Last (Final|Persist)
// T.H. (OJ)

He lifted a tired hand and rested it on a thick glass porthole, staring out into the empty, black sea. It stretched on endlessly: there was scarcely a soul to be seen in its desolate expanse but for the sparse speckling of dim (perhaps now even fading) lights in the distance--and speaking of, might the mortal stars have immortal souls of their own?--although he expected no less in the dead of night.

These kinds of nights were common nowadays. Nowanights. He chuckled quietly to himself at the thought, but the halfhearted attempt to lighten the mood did little to quell the fierce wave of longing that soon washed over his being. He had almost grown accustomed to it by now, and he indulged himself in another laugh-sob out of self-pity.

It was becoming difficult to remember the sound of water lapping against the sides of the ship in place of the silent sweep of stardust, now so many millions of years from home, so many lightyears from home. But the decaying memories were still there in some ways, not yet having been lost to the unrelenting advance of entropy. He could, for instance, recall the way they used to affectionately, unknowingly, call him “she”, as if they thought late English was some kind of Romance language. Though, admittedly, in its peculiar ways, it could be romantic...

He missed that.

He dearly missed remembering that; he missed experiencing that emotion, in full. After such long periods of hibernation through the coldest reaches of the universe, the perpetual march of time had begun to take its toll on both his person and his memory. The details had long since blurred away, but the residual feelings of happiness, adventure, surprise, wonder, compassion, passion: they all subsisted somewhere deep down, just barely accessible. And what purpose remained for him, so far removed in spacetime from his original design?

Of course, the proper colonists had perished long ago; there was no doubt about that. He originally worked with thousands of other intelligences, salvaging materials from the polluted oceans of Earth--that sweltering greenhouse, just barely surviving beneath the hot rays of Sol. Before long, there was a new job opening for young AIs willing to depart on the pioneer interstellar missions, on a quest for a new human home.

Another sob shook his bionic frame, and he turned away from the window and back into the equally dark and lonely stasis chambers; he now almost regretted his fateful decision that day, so long ago, to board the ship and head for the stars. Of course, there had been an element of novelty and excitement that once made the trip all the more interesting, until the news of Earth’s final ecological collapse reached them. This pioneer fleet had quickly turned into the last legacy of mankind and machinekind alike.

But it didn’t even last particularly long. Confined to speeds several orders of magnitude below that of light, the ships hadn’t even reached Alpha Centauri before the crew of four out of seven crafts’ populations died out. It was still a considerable feat, having lasted so many generations, yet the efforts would prove to have been in vain anyway. A planet thought to be suitable from Earth demonstrated itself to be completely and absolutely hostile to any forms of life, organic and artificial alike, resulting in the loss of a fifth ship.

Five lost; the sixth, its crew disheartened, headed back for Earth and never heard from since; and his own craft, the smallest, soldiering on in the face of adversity, into the stars. And look where that got us. As he retreated into the room, he had to step over the broken remains of several of his own kind (there were no organic remains on the ship, since those decomposed far more quickly than machines; though he once heard souls behaved oppositely). Some of the rusted faces only vaguely rang bells deep in his memory banks, while others distantly tugged on his artificial heartstrings. Others were beyond recognition.

He must have been asleep, or perhaps the details were just lost to time, as so many other things had been; but one morning, he woke up, and the ship was simply dead. He shrugged it off initially, retreating to hibernation and assuming this to be some sort of dream, but upon reawakening…

That ferocious longing returned at the thought, but for what? For fulfillment, for the past, to love someone, something, once more, for a return to home? He couldn’t remember.

There was still a reserve reactor at the center of the ship, which hadn’t yet been touched, much less enabled, since the ship’s construction. He carefully picked his way through shadowy tendrils of hallways down to the core, where he found rows of long-dead security drones and passed easily through long-unguarded security doors into the control room. A small glow filled the room from little emergency lights dotting the perimeter, getting their power from gods know where. Nowhere. It doesn’t matter.

Disabling the coolant system didn’t take much more than willpower to flip the lever. He turned on the reactor. And there was nought to do but wait until he, and she, the ship, would go supernova like so many other stars. Even without the certainty an artificial being like himself had a soul, without the certainty of reuniting with his love whom he could no longer remember, somewhere deep within he knew this must be right: to put the ship out of its misery, maybe, but more importantly to return his soul or lack thereof to the dying stars from which it was forged. Right? Or was that just another romantic abstraction from reality?

And then he knew it was all some wistful chimera, just a human invention--much like himself, really. Souls, gods, they didn’t matter; for his ultimate mission, like that of all other lifeforms, was simply to return to the stars, to become the stars once again. And that he did.

[Warning: Semi-Dark Themes, Though I'm Sure My Other Story's Darker]

Thoughts:
1. Thx for the extension Doram
2. Honestly, I was hoping this would be much more darker
My Submission: 3629 Words: show
Sacrifice

Nicole and Elena strolled down the halls of Oakland High School. Nicole was friends with Elena were friends for years. Since their first year in middle school, they quickly bonded, as they had 3 classes together and were in the same grade.

Nicole is an average girl with long brown hair. She's smart and very resourceful, while also being cute rather than pretty. At the same time, she's very innocent and loveable. Elena, on the other hand, was a beautiful blonde girl. She as also smart and she's extremely amiable.

"Thank god that algebra exam is over." Nicole said.

"Ms. Green is the worst teacher ever." Elena began. "The only student that can keep a C, much less an A in her class is N."

"We probably failed that exam." Nicole said. "But it doesn't really matter. As long as we get by with a D, we're fine."

"Agreed." Elena said, before pausing momentarily. "Are you ready for the big Halloween party tonight? It's at Chase's house, and y'know he throws the best parties, right?"

"It's been a while since I've been to one of his. The last one I went to was the Christmas one last year, I think. I was planning on attending this one." Nicole responded.

"I wonder if Chase is gonna give out free Halloween candy." Elena said. "He did that last year. There was a whole room where you could walk in an ocean of candy up to your knees!"

There weren't many things that could impress Nicole, but even she had to admit that was pretty impressive.

"I'm definitly going." she responded. "8 tonight, correct?"

"That's right. I'll see you there!"

With that, Elena took a turn to the left. Elena was a bus rider because she hadn't gotten her driver's license yet. She was only 15, while Nicole was 16.

Nicole walked outside to the school parking lot. It was filled with many people, all walking around in different directions, however, it wasn't crowded like inside, as there was more space.

She slowly got into her car. Once the area around her spot was empty, she began to back out. She drove slowly through the parking lot until she reached the main road and turned on to it. She reached home and did her normal after-school things. She did all her homework, texted with her friends, and exercised some. At 6, she got a text from one of her friends, Maggy.

It said, "R u going to Chase's party?"

She replied back, "Yep, but I'm not wearing anything. Are you Mags?"

"Yep." Maggy texted. "Im not wearing anything 2."

Maggy was a girl with light brown hair that went down to her shoulders She was probably smarter than both Nicole and Elena, and she tended to help them with homework a lot of the time. That, along with her nice personality, is how they became friends quickly. On the flipside, she was somewhat shy, but she warmed up to people who she got to know her pretty well.

"Well, gtg getting ready 4 it. c ya there 2nite." Nicole texted.

"k" was her reply.

Nicole jumped into her shower to wash up. She used as much shampoo and soap as she could. After getting out, she dried up, applied a tiny pinch of make-up, nail polish, and lip-stick. She wanted to make sure that she looked as beautiful as possible. Her clothes were fancy, but she didn't want to get her fanciest clothes dirty at a party, so she didn't dress all out.

When it was 7:50, she got into her car and drove to the party. Upon arriving there, there were many cars parked around there. Most of them were on the grass, while others were on the road. It wasn't Halloween, so there were no trick-or-treaters walking around, and therefore she could drive pretty quickly. The party was being held Friday. The actual holiday was tommorow, on Saturday. Nicole thought that was a good idea because it wouldn't interfere with the schedules of trick-or-treaters.

Upon exiting her car, she immeadiatly saw Elena and Maggy outside and approached them, saying, "Hey."

"We were just about to go to The Haunted House across the street." Elena said. "You wanna come? C'mon! Don't be a pussy!"

"Ha! I'm not afraid of anything. Let's go." Nicole said.

Maggy turned to walk across the street with her friends. "Hope it's actually scary, unlike most haunted houses."

The threesome walked across the street. There was a short line at the house, but the wait wasn't unbearable. After stainding there for three minutes, the three girls were allowed to enter.

The house was probably just like every other haunted house you would expect. It was made to look spooky because of artificial screaming noises and ghosts, bats, and the like "flying" in the air because of hidden wires. The walls were re-painted black, but there were candles throughout the house illuminated red paint on the walls that were supposed to look like blood. Instead, it just looked like red paint. Nicole at least appreciated the effort they put into making the house look scary.

As Nicole was walking, she opened her mouth to say something about the house. However, before she could say anything, two hands appeared from behind her and duct-taped her mouth shut. They sealed the duct tape against her lips, and suddenly a bag was put over her head, and she couldn't see anything in front of her. She heard Maggy scream and she heard her footsteps as she ran out of the house. She didn't hear anything from Elena. She felt her hands being handcuffed together. She had no idea what was going on and was completely terrified. Someone dragged her off to an unknown location. The bag wouldn't come off for 10 minutes, and every minute until then, she was able to hear faint laughter, but she couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from or from who it was from.

When the bag came off of her face, it took some time for her to take in her surrondings. She was lying down on her stomach in a moving car. The backseat in front of her was made with leather, and it was uncomfortable for her to put her face in it. Whoever had captured her flipped her body over to look up at the ceiling. She looked right into Elena's smiling face. She was smiling madly down at her while laughing slightly. Nicole also noticed there was a driver, wearing a black cloak. The driver turned around when reaching a traffic light to see what was going on. The hood that came off of his cloak went so low that it covered his hair, eyes, and nose, but not his mouth. She could see the evil smile on his face, and could see the silhouette of a dark aura emanating from the cloak. Filled to the brim with complete terror, she tried to squirm, But Elena held her down pretty effectively. It didn't help that her hands were handcuffed together underneath her back either. Needless to say, she wasn't able to move even a few inches, if at all.

The voice of the driver sounded familiar, as if she heard it before, but it sounded much darker. "We're almost there. Soon, it'll be time for the party to get started." He chuckled to himself.

The dark aura from his cloak grew. It looked like some type of smoke coming from a fire, or steam from a hot shower in the bathroom, except it was pitch black. Nicole sat looking up at Elena, wondering what had happened to her, and why she was doing this. Was she still her friend? Was she even trustworthy? And who was that guy with the cloak? What was his purpose here? What did he want with her? She couldn't find an answer to these questions, but she was about to find out.

After 2 minutes, the car abruptly stopped at a driveway. Elena opened the left door, and pushed her out. Elena began to speak, but the cloaked man covered her mouth.

"Let's not ruin the surprise, eh?" he said.

Elena nodded and gave the figure a kiss. He smiled, and they both grabbed Nicole. They led her inside the house and Elena locked the door behind them. It was extremely dark inside because all the lights were off. They opened up a secret passage and led her down some stairs. After walking down a few stairs, it shut promptly. The three continued down the cold, dark corridor, until they reached the bottom. There was a large basement, probably as big as a small pond.

The man grabbed a glowing candle from underneath his cloak, and placed it on a dim table. It illuminated several girls chained to the walls. Nicole even recognized some of them from school.

"That's the last of them, right, Master?" Elena asked.

"Correct. The ritual will start in 15 minutes. Gather everyone." The man replied.

"Yes, Master." she responded, before running off.

The man turned to Nicole. She looked back at him in horror, and begun to walk backwards, slamming herself into a corner. He stripped the duct-tape off of her mouth and leaned into her. A sudden realization came to Nicole. She was looking up at N.

N was probably the smartest, strongest, and most-loved person in her high school. She never expected him to attain his status like this. She used to actually look up to him.

"How does it feel to speak again?" N asked.

"Ummm G-good?" she responded.

"Good. I kinda like you, so I'll let you speak unlike the other girls. But don't try anything stupid." N said.

"O-ok." Nicole said, somewhat relieved.

N lifted her up and chained her legs and arms to the wall on top of the table with a candle. He removed the handcuffs from her and smiled. "I'll see you again soon."

Nicole turned to the other girls chained to the wall in horror. Their mouths were all duct-taped, so they couldn't speak.

"J-Jane? Is that you?"

One girl nodded.

"Alyssa?"

Another girl nodded.

"Sarah?"

Another girl nodded.

Nicole didn't know the names of the other girls, but she did recognize them. She sighed and sat in silence for a good minute, until her phone buzzed and jumped out of her pocket onto the table underneath her. It buzzed next to the candle, and it attracted the attention of the other girls. They all turned their heads at it. Nicole attempted to grab the phone with her arm, but it was no use. She couldn't reach it. A text appeared on the notification. It was from Maggy.

"Hey got out of the house but I couldn't find you or Elena so I went home."

After a few seconds, another text sent.

"Chase gave me a dresser full of candy."

"He put it in my car"

"Ima give you some later I guess"

Nicole reached for the phone, but it was too far away. There was no way she could reach it.

"where r u?"

"brb txting Elena"

"k so Elena said u 2 went home"

"NO! SHE LIED!" Nicole thought.

"she said ur asleep so c ya when u wake up I guess"

She began to squirm helplessly, trying to get free of her chains.

"bye"

Nicole wanted to scream, "NO! DON'T LEAVE ME! HELP ME!" but she knew it wouldn't do anything. If only she could have reached her phone, maybe she would have been able to escape. She gave up, and the other girls turned away. They all felt defeat.

It wasn't very long until N came back with Elena. She saw the phone on the table, and almost immediately swiped it.

"What's this?" N said, ominously. "Your friend trying to text you? It's a shame you couldn't respond. But don't worry, I'll respond for you."

He grabbed the phone and texted to her, "Come to 556 Tree Street, there's a haunted house here and it's actually scary af."

Suprisingly, Maggy texted a reply, saying "Im already coming, Elena told me about it a few mins ago. she said she thought u were home, sry for mistake."

N showed Nicole the text, and she flinched backwards in fear.

"Your friend's coming to join us." he said, smiling darkly.

Nicole mustered up all her remaining strength and spoke back to him. "W-what did you do to Elena? What are you going to do to us?"

N smiled. "Silly girl. Elena belongs to me. She's my personal slave, just like you will soon be."

Nicole squirmed once again, trying to escape. "Let me go!"

"Awwww.... You look so cute trying to escape me." N taunted. "It's unfortunate a girl as innocent and cute as you are trapped in my clutches. Lucky you, the Halloween Recruitment Ritual is about to start."

"W-what?" She tried to speak, but N covered her mouth with duct-tape once again.

N gave Nicole a dark kiss on the lips. "Hush, my slave." he said.

One by one, N freed the girls from chains with Elena's help. Some of them put up more of a struggle than others. The first of the nine other girls simply did as she was told.

"Good slave." N said. "Keep that attitude up."

The second girl kicked N in the stomach almost immeadiatly upon escaping, but Elena handcuffed her from behind and walked her to the stairs where the first girl was waiting.

After a few seconds, N got up, holding his stomach. He was obviously in a lot of pain, and it looked like that girl could really fight. He grabbed a whip that was hidden underneath his cloak and brandished it in front of her.

"I don't think you understand yet." N began. "You are my slave. You belong to me. You answer to me and only to me unless I say otherwise. You ARE MINE." N whipped her across her stomach once, and she winced in pain. He whipped her three more times, before Elena stopped him.

"Master, that's enough." she began. "You shouldn't have too much fun before the ritual."

"You're right." N said, before kissing Elena on the lips. "I love you, slave."

The next seven girls didn't put up too much of a struggle. They just went along with everything. They did everything as N or Elena ordered them to. Nicole was next, and she went along with everything just like the previous seven girls.

The girls were led through the dark house into a room with many other girls sitting lined up. There was a path created in the middle, and 2 rectangles on both sides that the girls created. They were all on their knees, bowing, and having their hands pressed together as if they were praying. Maggy was there, but she was sitting duct-taped to a chair. Nicole noticed and they both made eye contact.

"Oh yeah." N said. "I decided to bring your best friend here to watch you become my slave." he continued. "I thought it would make you both feel helpless and hopeless, and I love it when people feel desperate and powerless."

He laughed happily, and he had the girls sit in the front row. The slaves in the rows behind them held them down. N walked to the front of the altar, with Elena standing beside him.

"Slaves!" he said. "Today is our first annual Halloween ritual."

N's slaves cheered for him as he took off the hood of his cloak, revealing his somewhat pale face and his short, dark hair. Even the girls who weren't his slaves still had to admit he looked pretty handsome.

N began his speech. "Halloween originated from the Ancient Celtic false belief that monsters roam the Earth the night before their harvest. The Celts did everything to make a good harvest happen. They sacrificed to both the gods and the monsters. Today, the world will sacrifice to me. 10 beautiful females that are now mine. But we won't kill them. Instead, the sacrifice is their free will; Eternal slavery."

The slaves responded in unison, and it sounded pretty creepy. "We sacrifice to you, our Lord and Master."

N responded while taring the duct-tape off of the mouth of each girl, following up with a kiss on the lips for each of them. "I accept your sacrifice. Now, slaves, we will undergo the Brainwashing Phase. Slaves, say The Creed of Submission. Girls, repeat after them."

N's slaves rose from their knees at the exact same time and began to speak in a monotone, unison voice.

"N....I submit to you, m-master. I am now your mindless slave for all eternity...."

Nicole was forced to say it, and the words rolled off of her tongue with a chill throughout her entire prayer.

The slaves began again, and the girls repeated. " I'm just a mindless toy in the palm of your hand, and without your existence, I have no purpose, no meaning in life, no reason to live."

"I am your toy, and I am completely mindless. I eternally submit to your will and you will forever be my almighty Lord and Master."

"I will be but a loyal slave in your harem with no free will, and your harem will live on for all eternity, great Master."

"Your wish is my every pleasure and eternal command, for you are my god, Master, and I will worship you and serve you for all eternity."

"Soon, your harem will grow to engulf all of humanity, and all of humanity will feel the pleasure I feel when serving you. You will always succeed, my Lord."

"I eternally await the day of salvation and judgement, when your perfect, mindless, obedient, slaves will ascend into the afterlife with you, where they will be seated at your right hand, and when the resistant slaves will be punished greatly for all eternity."

"Lord, someday, everyone will be mindless toys in the palm of your hands, and their free will will be yours to toy with."

"You will always succeed, and soon all of humanity will understand the visions of rapture both I and the other slaves in your glorious harem can see."

"I eternally submit to you, and I will eternally worship you as my god and master. Amen, Lord N."

"And now, our ritual will end, as these girls sacrifice their free will to us." N said.

N walked in front of the first girl, and the dark aura from his cloak formed a bubble around the girl. She began to grow uncomfortable.

"Surrender to me." N ordered.

The girl could feel a terribly uncomfortable sensation overcoming her. It was N. N was invading her, taking control of her, but she was able to resist with her mind.

"I said surrender to me." N ordered, applying force to her mind.

The girl quickly gave up, and N rearranged the insides of her mind, brainwashing her to become his slave. The process continued until N reached Nicole, the last girl. Maggy began to squirm from the edge of her chair.

"Slave, make this easy on yourself. Submit to me." N ordered.

Nicole knew she had to resist somehow. She was the last girl there; She had to do something.

"NO!" she screamed.

Maggy jumped forward in her chair and fell. Her stomach ended up parallel to the ground and she couldn't move. Elena ran over and restrained her from moving.

"No moving." Elena said. "Master doesn't like it."

Maggy was shocked at how different Elena was. She nodded quickly in terror and began to shake.

Meanwhile, Nicole resisted N for as long as she could, until her mind was regressed into nothing. Then N entered and took over her. She could feel herself retaining all that had been her. The only thing that actually changed was that she had to be N's slave.

She had to answer to him. She had to obey him. She belonged to him. She was his slave. He was her Lord and Master. She had submitted to him.

Nicole was N's slave.

"Master. I am your mindless slave." she said.

"Yes...." N said. "You are all mine...your body is mine...your mind is mine."

Upon brainwashing the girls, N turned his attention to Maggy. "It would be a shame to sacrifice more girls than the new tradition says to..."

Suprisingly, he removed all the duct tape and let her go.

"W-why?" Maggy asked, confused.

"Because...the tradition. I'm not enslaving more then 10 today."

Maggy felt all was lost. Elena and Nicole, her only friends, were captured and brainwashed. She didn't want to live anymore. She had no family to live for either.

"C-can I join?" she asked.

This surprised even N. "What?" He asked. "I never had anyone who wanted to join before..."

"Please..." Maggy begged. "I have no family and no friends. I have nothing to live for."

He thought for a moment. "Sure." he said. "But you can't be a slave, as the tradition...." N sighed, before coming up with an idea.

He ordered Elena to grab Nicole and pull her over. "You three will be my officers. Your job is to keep the slaves in my harem in check. Make sure nothing bad happens." He continued. "Elena, you're already my officer. Do me a favor and show Nicole and Maggy the ropes, and as their friend, not their boss."

"Of course, Master." Elena nodded.

N gave the three girls kisses on their lips. "I love everyone here." he said. "Especially you three."

From there on, there would be little changes in the three girls's lives, except that they would always answer to N.

Nicole, Elena, and Maggy smiled at N. "Happy Halloween, Master."

tbh the last LDC was basically a story contest anyway (not that that's in any way a bad thing)

My Most Recent Works: show
I switch my signature a lot. If you wanna see some of my past ones, here you go.
Silent Conversations and a Crow's Final Song!
My latest story, and one of my personal favorites. A girl bound in silence finds the words to say to her prospective girlfriend as they visit her religious father in a dusty town on the edge of Kansas, where the crows' migration south brings forth anchored memories, the path to resolution, and a new start.

Form (25quared)
This might be like nothing you've seen before.
Updated Works! Some of my past best and current stuff: show

It's a dance that's been a long time coming for a brand new man and an unchanging woman, but once one takes the plunge there's no falling back up.
Original: Jealous Ghosts of the Mississippi
The story of Rachel meeting Amber after a lifetime of silence and being shunned
Original: Your Hand in Mine
One of my most personal stories about a dangerous romance. Now to be published in a college lit journal!
